Yeah, I carried a scraper for the inside of the windshield. It was either that or not breathe when it was cold out.

DeanT - Posted - 02/13/2016:  14:54:23

Yep, I remember the sucky heater and defroster. And battery under the back seat

OM45GE - Posted - 02/13/2016:  16:06:50

I forgot to replace the plastic cover over the positive battery terminal and almost set the car on fire the first time someone sat in the back seat afterwards.

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/13/2016:  16:11:19

Talk about a hot seat!

DeanT - Posted - 02/13/2016:  17:10:42

I don't think anyone ever rode in the back of mine... it was too full of spare parts

OM45GE - Posted - 02/13/2016:  18:29:53

I have a different German car now. It's got more than 10 times the horsepower than the VW and the seats only get warm if you push the heated seat button.

DeanT - Posted - 02/13/2016:  18:51:11

I'm loving my first ever Japanese car

OM45GE - Posted - 02/14/2016:  03:57:09

We've had a couple Hondas. They were great cars.

DeanT - Posted - 02/14/2016:  06:07:51

My friend's Honda  has 221,000 miles and still has the original clutch

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/14/2016:  08:48:15

The first vehicle I owned was a 1965 Honda 90 Sport. Had it my last year of high school. Some guy in a car T-boned me, I went flying through the air, landed on my butt, a foot away from a big rock. Insurance fixed it and I drove it (wearing a helmet) for another year.

OM45GE - Posted - 02/14/2016:  12:31:03

I bet you were getting over 80 mpg too.

DeanT - Posted - 02/14/2016:  17:38:07

Just glad you survived!

dat - Posted - 02/15/2016:  07:47:16

flying isn't bad, but the landing sucks

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/15/2016:  07:58:46

Luckily I was only going about 20 mph and he was pulling out of a side street. I jumped out of the ditch I landed in and started cursing the guy, worried about my bike that was lying in the street revving out full blast. Later on it sunk in how banged up I was. Funny - it was soon after that I got the insane idea to buy a banjo - haven't been the same since....😎

dat - Posted - 02/15/2016:  09:26:32

must have hit yer head purty hard

DeanT - Posted - 02/15/2016:  10:09:45

Oh my, that explains things... I fell out of the hey-loft and hit my head... no wonder I got a banjo....

dat - Posted - 02/15/2016:  10:26:01

my brother dropped a hammer on my head when I was about 9, we were building a tree house, wasn't long after that I heard the twang of a banjo and loved it

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/15/2016:  12:39:30

But I wish that darn ringing in my ears would quit

dat - Posted - 02/15/2016:  12:58:43

the ringing does change pitch every once in a while

DeanT - Posted - 02/15/2016:  15:35:28

I only notice the ringing when someone mentions it... like now...

dat - Posted - 02/16/2016:  06:00:38

pretty much gotten used to it, the ringing isn't as bad as when we go to a restaurant and everybody is talking, all the mumbled up noises in the background I can't understand the people I'm sitting at the same table with

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/16/2016:  06:50:02

Mine isn't that bad, it comes and goes. I think it's when my blood pressure is on the high side.

dat - Posted - 02/16/2016:  07:42:03

so far my blood pressure is good, but the hearing isn't all to well, to many saws and machines running, cars and trucks with open headers, target shooting and hunting with out ear protection, I wear ear plugs an ear protection now, but a little late.

OM45GE - Posted - 02/16/2016:  08:22:47

My dad was a pilot in WWII and was very hard of hearing.

dat - Posted - 02/16/2016:  09:33:59

my bro in law came back from Vietnam deaf as could be

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/16/2016:  10:05:25

My father in law was half deaf from driving the old farm tractors

dat - Posted - 02/16/2016:  10:41:25

I take it that it wasn't this old farm tractor

DeanT - Posted - 02/16/2016:  15:57:41

Cool, what a coincidence... that's the latest song I've learned!

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/16/2016:  16:22:20

That's hilarious!

Actually he had a couple of old Case tractors. When he retired he restored them, then hooked one up to a wood splitter he built. I should have paid more attention back then - he was a great downhome mechanic. (these pics are off a website - I haven't got his pics handy)

back from Dallas, I don't care for traffic much

dmiller - Posted - 02/18/2016:  10:53:09

I'll be heading to Bloomington (southern Indiana) to visit with Mom and family next month.  The main road to get there from here is a 4 lane highway for 150 miles/ and then inter-state though Wisconsin and Illinois, except for the last 50 or so miles there in Indiana.  That last 50 or so miles is the most fun to drive. I usually pass through there late at night (10 or 11 pm) and I grew up driving roads like that with the hills/ curves/ switchbacks/ you name it. I used to blow through everything those roads had to offer at high speed back in my youth and I haven't forgotten much!

The last time I went back home, I was doing close to 65 MPH on the country roads in that last 50 miles, when I noticed headlights fast approaching me in my rear view mirror. I saw a spot where I could pull over ahead to let them pass me, and I did.  The car with those approaching headlights passed me like a bat out of hell.  Country roads are much more fun than the "big roads".  approve

I went from Seymour,IN to Jasper one time with the truck - beautiful country but not real quick in a semi.

DeanT - Posted - 02/18/2016:  12:30:08

Highway 80 south of Chicago into Indiana is the worst driving I've ever done in my life, I thought I was going to get squashed by simis at 80 mph.

dat - Posted - 02/18/2016:  12:30:09

a lot of scenery you get to see driving a truck that you don't get to stop and see

dmiller - Posted - 02/18/2016:  12:40:59

Chuck - -The road I'm talking talking about is from Terre Haute to Bloomington (Indiana 46 East).

 It wouldn't be a "quick trip" in a semi either.  Lot's of hills/ curves/ down-shifting/ etc.

dat - Posted - 02/18/2016:  13:44:23

a buddy of mine used to drive through Arkansas a lot, some of his deliveries were out off the main roads, he said a lot of times he would make a bend in the road and have his front tires as far to the edge as he could get, and his trailer end would still be taking up the whole lane on the oncoming side, he said you just go slow and hope the oncoming traffic is too

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/18/2016:  15:32:09

I-80 along south Chicagoland into Indiana is a truck bottleneck for sure- 5 interstates come together in that area...80, 94, 294, 57, 55 and further east 65. Some nut in a dump truck roared past me once and was so close we slapped side mirrors. Same thing happened once on the Cross-Bronx Xprssway.

DeanT - Posted - 02/18/2016:  17:01:59

Next time I drive through there... it going to be middle of the night! That's how I go when I visit family in Michigan

dat - Posted - 02/19/2016:  08:12:54

I used to drive a lot at night, I always thought it was nice to go somewhere I haven't been, drive there at night then wake up in the morning and see everything new in the daylight.

OM45GE - Posted - 02/19/2016:  15:14:11

I like driving at night when there's no traffic.

dat - Posted - 02/19/2016:  15:27:55

getting to where the headlights from the oncoming traffic makes it harder for me to see as well, I may need driving specs.

I finally broke down and spent 6 dollars for some 1.25 readers

Do you guys think headlights are brighter these days? I seem to have more difficulty facing oncoming headlights .....either that or it's my eyes getting older and more sensitive.

DeanT - Posted - 02/19/2016:  17:33:02

If it starts raining at night, I either let my wife drive, or we stay home. Headlights are worse then ever these days, but glare is impossible anymore.

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/19/2016:  17:49:03

Yeah, I agree. Anyone tried those night glasses?

dat - Posted - 02/20/2016:  06:52:46

I've tried beer goggles, they cut down the glare pretty well, but not the best for driving

OM45GE - Posted - 02/20/2016:  10:53:16

When I got my lenses replace because of cataracts, the glare just about went away. It's a common symptom of cataracts.

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/20/2016:  11:02:56

You can get lenses that help counteract cataracts?

dat - Posted - 02/20/2016:  11:12:59

I haven't been to the eye doctor in a great long time, I probably need to go have a check up.  when I complain to my regular doc about stuff, he just laughs and says for my age not to worry about it,  I tell him I'm not that old and he says that I'm actually in good shape,  get used to it.   doesn't make me feel any better

They take out the old lenses and replace them with new ones.
