I used to swim at a YMCA. The pool had six lanes. During open swim, two were designated slow lanes, two intermediate, one fast lane and one for the Masters swimmers. Those gals and guys would run you down.

us retired folks have a lot of time to train :)

OM45GE - Posted - 01/23/2017:  03:39:30

I'm hoping to join your team in November.

DeanT - Posted - 01/23/2017:  10:20:59

You're going to LOVE it! But the days shrink in half when you retire. You'll find out!

OM45GE - Posted - 01/23/2017:  11:04:01

I've heard that. That's OK, hopefully it will shrink from the part when I'm asleep.

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/23/2017:  12:47:33

Being off work again this winter turns me into a nighthawk. The other night we jammed til 2 am

OM45GE - Posted - 01/23/2017:  13:10:38

I'm starting to wake up at 2:00 AM

DeanT - Posted - 01/23/2017:  18:44:55

I wake up at midnight... 2 am... 4 am... 6 am... getting old sucks...

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/23/2017:  20:01:26

I try not to drink anything after 7 pm

OM45GE - Posted - 01/24/2017:  02:48:36

I sleep through from about 10:00 to 4:00.

DeanT - Posted - 01/24/2017:  05:36:49

I don't have to set an alarm. I just choose which time I wake up, that I want to stay up...

OM45GE - Posted - 01/24/2017:  06:14:55

I've never used an alarm either. I just wake up. If I do need to get up earlier that usual I just seem to adjust my inner alarm clock and wake up earlier. It drives mu wife nuts and she insists on an alarm clock backup if we have to get up early for some reason.

DeanT - Posted - 01/24/2017:  11:07:33

being retired helps too... and then there's the dogs and breakfast...

OM45GE - Posted - 01/24/2017:  11:30:37

Toby usually gets up when he hears me.

DeanT - Posted - 01/24/2017:  17:16:17

<----- Lisa get me up at 6 am if I'm not already up.

OM45GE - Posted - 01/24/2017:  18:47:57

I wake my son and wife at 6:00

DeanT - Posted - 01/25/2017:  02:53:02

I bet they love that!

OM45GE - Posted - 01/25/2017:  04:00:01

Actually, the want me to. Ethan has to get ready for school and my wife commutes into Boston. Ethan's got a day off today so he's sleeping in. I've been up since 4:00. cool

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/25/2017:  08:52:12

When I was a teenager I loved sleeping in late...now not so much

DeanT - Posted - 01/25/2017:  10:24:39

I slept in when I was a teenager too... unless it was harvest time.

I've been up since 4:30, darn dog. I went to the gym and got an early start!

OM45GE - Posted - 01/25/2017:  11:15:00

We've got a gym within walking distance that's open 24 hours a day Monday through Saturday.

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/25/2017:  13:09:43

I go to city pool/fitness centres. I buy 40 passes for $175. You can use the fitness training room, pool, sauna or steam room and hot tub/whirlpool.

OM45GE - Posted - 01/25/2017:  15:21:19

That's pretty. We've got a great YMCA in town. It's $700 a year.  The 24 hour one is $300 a year but they don't have a pool.

DeanT - Posted - 01/25/2017:  16:05:45

The Air Force base is 1 1/2 miles down the road. My retiree ID card gives me all the perks of being enlisted, including the base gym and pool. My wife takes the senior workout classes and water aerobic there too.

OM45GE - Posted - 01/26/2017:  02:53:26

I meant to say Chuck's deal was pretty "good". Yours is even better, but you certainly earned it with your service.

DeanT - Posted - 01/26/2017:  06:47:47

I remember back in the day, when the Y was $2 a day, if you didn't want to buy a membership. My mom would give me $2, and tell me to be home by supper time.

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/26/2017:  09:22:37

I used to take my kids to the Y to go swimming on weekends. They loved it, especially in the winter.

OM45GE - Posted - 01/26/2017:  10:51:27

When I was a kid I went to a YMCA summer camp. It was on an island in the middle of a lake and we got out there in a WWII surplus landing craft - the kind with the big ramp that flops down in front.

DeanT - Posted - 01/26/2017:  11:00:21

Camp Alcatraz!!!

OM45GE - Posted - 01/26/2017:  11:49:00

I didn't want to be there but I usually ended up having fun most of the time.

DeanT - Posted - 01/26/2017:  13:14:59

you could have swam to freedom in the night...

OM45GE - Posted - 01/26/2017:  13:35:17

The overnights were opportunities for kids to be cruel to one another.

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/26/2017:  15:38:32

Like "hotfoot" !

DeanT - Posted - 01/26/2017:  17:37:45

in those days we got even, instead of whining about bullying

OM45GE - Posted - 01/27/2017:  06:18:48

True. I didn't enjoy it though.

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/27/2017:  06:47:05

I didn't like bullies much,,especially the kind that had 6 or 7 cowardly hangers-on with them for backup. One on one I could handle it,,not that.

OM45GE - Posted - 01/27/2017:  06:59:26

When I was a freshman in high school we were bussed to another school district while our high school was being built. A senior used to sit behind me on the bus and flick my ear with his finger as hard as he could. It hurt like hell but if I turned around, he would punch me in the face. That hurt worse so I didn't turn around. When we were filing off the bus he liked to knock my books out of my hands (in the days before backpacks) and kick them so they would scatter under the seats. I dreaded those bus rides.

I also didn't have any realistic way to get even and would have loved a way to address the bullying.

DeanT - Posted - 01/27/2017:  10:53:44

I was a skinny ass scrapper, and got in a lot of fights. I got my ass beat a lot, but dished out a lot of pain too. One day I got a lucky shot in, on one of our school's bullies, and his upper tooth came right through his upper lip, and blood was everywehere. I never got messed with again.

OM45GE - Posted - 01/27/2017:  11:18:29

I've fought a few bullies when I was a kid, usually in defense of my younger bothers and sisters. But I also learned first hand how helpless you can be when someone older and bigger with a sadistic streak has it in for you. Even worse when a group gangs up on someone.

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/27/2017:  11:24:20

I had to fight a few times, but I had to be really furious, being a smallish placid kid. I always told my friends that if fighting was important to me I would have learned how and become good at it.

OM45GE - Posted - 01/27/2017:  11:28:20

I run into people in the business world that I know for sure were bullies when they were kids. Many of them never stopped being bullies.

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/27/2017:  12:33:35

Unfortunately there are too many of those in the trucking business

OM45GE - Posted - 01/27/2017:  13:42:03

Yeah, I've known more than a few of those.

DeanT - Posted - 01/27/2017:  14:58:58

I just bought a brand new 12" rim Goodtime Americana. I missed my old Goodtime (gave it to a college student may years ago), and caught a good price on Amazon. Man this thing is a blast, and only about 4 pounds. First brand new banjo I've ever owned.

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/27/2017:  15:26:12

12" rim? Wow, it must growl pretty good

DeanT - Posted - 01/27/2017:  16:37:30

yep, 12" head. Surprisingly loud for an open back. It will play it's first gig next Thursday. If it works out well, the Gibson lead sled might go under the bed indefinitely.

OM45GE - Posted - 01/28/2017:  03:56:33

New banjo days are fun. Enjoy!

Time to order up some new packs of strings

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/28/2017:  06:31:43

What kind do you like? I've been using GHS lately.

OM45GE - Posted - 01/28/2017:  06:33:41

Have you ever shopped at Just Strings? They're my favorite online string source. Ironically about 20 miles from me.
