Time to find a protector. Preferable someone with a Chippendale body right?

OM45GE - Posted - 05/23/2012:  04:14:17

Yeah, just to check in every night and make sure you're tucked in safe and sound.

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/23/2012:  06:35:54

You mean this guy?

He's pretty much had a key to my apartment/house for as long as I've known him.  Like 9 years now.  (He also has a girlfriend.)

And no, I don't have a landlord anymore.  I have a mortgage.

dat - Posted - 05/23/2012:  08:22:36

the joys of home ownership,     we just had to replace our waterheater, my bride is repainting the living room and I have some siding I need to replace, the outside needs painting, which I'll start right after I've put off as long as my bride will let me  (which I believe I'll be starting it pretty quick, I've put it off fer a while now)

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/23/2012:  09:33:31

I'm a little concerned about the wiring in my house. The outside light in the yard worked fine when I moved in and then one day stopped working. I figured the bulb needed to be replaced, but I tried four different bulbs and none of them worked.

And then I had a nightlight in the upstairs bathroom that went out and again I figured I needed to replace the bulb but the other day I tried to run the vacuum using that outlet and it didn't work at all.

DP said he'd help with all that stuff but then he got this new girlfriend and has been kind of distracted.

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/23/2012:  09:49:36

And of course there seems to be a leak when I use the hot water.

dat - Posted - 05/23/2012:  10:02:28

seems like there is always something,

wiring is easy, just remember that ALL electrical parts run on smoke, if you ever let the smoke out, they'll never work.

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/23/2012:  10:33:07

What if they don't smoke at all?!!!

dat - Posted - 05/23/2012:  10:40:59

then  you have a good start,

DeanT - Posted - 05/23/2012:  10:54:41

Just yesterday I spent 2 hours deforesting our self defrosting refrigerator. I use a hammer and chisel.

dat - Posted - 05/23/2012:  11:01:19

YOU OLD CHISELER YOU.

we have to do that with our deep freeze every once in a while, it isn't bad since we have it plugged up in the barn, but it does grow more moisture down there than in the house

DeanT - Posted - 05/23/2012:  11:18:24

It would be hard to say good buy to that old fridge... it’s over 50 years old. Our freezer in the basement is a 1947 model.

dat - Posted - 05/23/2012:  12:44:10

what brand is it?    some of those old freezers are worth enough to sell them and buy one that won't last but about 5 years

DeanT - Posted - 05/23/2012:  16:38:27

Th fridge is an Amana, and the freezer is a GE. They will be replaced when they cease to work, just like my 1960’s Maytag washer and dryer, and my wife’s 1928, and 1950’s Singer sewing machines.... the stuff will probably last longer than me.

OM45GE - Posted - 05/24/2012:  04:29:55

Those old fridges and freezer sure can suck electricity though. We had an old freezer in the basement at our old house. I though we were saving by buying in bulk. The thing finally died and our electric bill went down about $25 a month.

DeanT - Posted - 05/24/2012:  07:22:54

That’s not too bad, a new freezer would pay for itself in about 2 years... if it lasts that long... A friend of mine went through three fridges in the first year he bought his house.

dat - Posted - 05/24/2012:  07:25:12

We had a maytag washer and dryer when I was growing up, they were 1964 or 1965 models and they lasted all while I was at home and even quite a few years after I moved out, I believe my mother had to replace them in the late 90's

My parents bought a used washing machine right before my older sister was born because they knew they'd be washing lots of diapers and baby clothes.  That would have been about the same age as what you're talking about.

Somewhere around my early teens my mom started hoping that washer would die because she wanted to buy something fancier.  But it just kept going and going.  Finally two weeks before I went to college, we went away for the weekend on a camping trip.  We were gone for about five days and when we came home we had to force the kitchen door open and discovered half the ceiling down and water gushing in through the ceiling.  The toilet tank in the upstairs bathroom had cracked and had been running for probably most of the time we were gone.  The washer had been sitting in a couple feet of water for a few days and that killed it.

Mom's had a couple of "fancy" washers since then but none of them have lasted anywhere near as long.

About 20 years ago I had an electric bill one month that was over $130 more than usual. I called the company and talked to a customer service rep. He asked about all kinds of things like did I just get a water bed or a big fish tank. Once we ruled all that out, I could hear him taping away on a calculator. He finally said "It sounds like you have a 3 HP submersible water pump that was running non-stop for 26 days last billing cycle." Sure enough, we pulled the pump and there was a crack in the fitting that kept the pressure switch from shutting off. It cost me $150 to have it fixed, so the payoff was pretty short.

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/24/2012:  09:23:01

So I have to tell you about my morning. The dogs were really noisy last night, barking and stuff starting around 4am. I went down at one point and they just looked at me wagging their tails. But they kept barking.

Then when I got up, I noticed all the cats were on the landing at the top of the stairs, really agitated. I was trying to figure out if I'd gone to bed early and forgotten to feed them or let them out right before bed or something.

So I fed them and let the dogs out and whatever. Then I gathered up my clothes and went into the bathroom to shower and get dressed. I was just about to climb into the shower when I saw something brown on top of the bathroom door.

THERE WAS A BAT IN MY BATHROOM!!!!!!!!!

Um, so, right after you get naked is totally not the time to discover you might need to run screaming out of the house.

Now there's a geek for you.

OM45GE - Posted - 05/24/2012:  09:25:13

LOL. I wonder what the cats would have done if they actually caught the bat?

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/24/2012:  09:27:37

Thank goodness they all are up to date on their shots.

The poor thing was terrified when I went to catch him. I didn't know they could make that much noise! I think he must have had a rough night.

And I'm definitely thinking I need to fix my screen in my window.

OM45GE - Posted - 05/24/2012:  10:06:38

I like having them around. They're fun to watch flying - quite the acrobats! and they eat tons of mosquitos. That said, I like them outside not in!

we have some at our house that we watch fly around right before dark, I've thought about building a bat house and hanging it down by the barn.

AWAY from the house

DeanT - Posted - 05/24/2012:  10:47:28

all it takes in our house to cause a major commotion, is a stupid moth...

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/24/2012:  11:26:19

Most of the craziness in my house is due to stink bugs. But this morning all the critters were all kinds of riled up!

OM45GE - Posted - 05/24/2012:  15:13:35

What were they riled about?

DeanT - Posted - 05/24/2012:  15:43:29

They went batty

OM45GE - Posted - 05/24/2012:  17:20:54

Oh yeah.

dingo - Posted - 05/24/2012:  18:44:51

Really wild you say?

OM45GE - Posted - 05/25/2012:  02:28:18

One time when we were kids we were shooting little Lady Finger firecrackers into the air with slingshots. A bat swooped in on one of them and was apparently deafened when it popped. The bat dropped to the ground and lay there for about 10 minutes with all of us standing around looking at it. Suddenly it flew up and away leaving a bunch of screaming kids behind.

dingo - Posted - 05/25/2012:  04:20:50

How I miss the little tree bats in Texas, had one that would hang from the screen door all day. Nothing disturbed him.

I take it they didn't move to MO with you.

DeanT - Posted - 05/25/2012:  07:23:22

They fly around the street lights in the city chowing down on bugs

OM45GE - Posted - 05/25/2012:  08:52:13

Have you ever seen slow motion video of bats catching insects? It's incredible.

DeanT - Posted - 05/25/2012:  10:24:45

They are like a cross between mice and hummingbirds

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/25/2012:  11:52:39

Definitely very cool. But I'd rather not have them in the house.

DeanT - Posted - 05/25/2012:  15:34:08

I love the bat house at our local zoo

OM45GE - Posted - 05/25/2012:  17:20:45

What's that like?

DeanT - Posted - 05/25/2012:  18:33:23

It’s an underground cave... cool as heck

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/25/2012:  18:40:13

That sounds cool.

dingo - Posted - 05/25/2012:  19:09:30

The biggest tourist traps in Texas is during bat season, they have several great places to go if you are into bats.

OM45GE - Posted - 05/25/2012:  19:19:53

I like watching them fly around outside. Not so sure about the cave thing.

DeanT - Posted - 05/25/2012:  20:34:44

I wish they would chase the Canadian geese back to Canada

OM45GE - Posted - 05/26/2012:  04:30:16

I just got back from walking Toby. There were about a hundred Canada Geese on the high school ball fields. He TRIED to chase them back to Canada. At least they're not pooping where the kids play now.

DeanT - Posted - 05/26/2012:  08:24:02

My dogs think geese poo is a snack

OM45GE - Posted - 05/27/2012:  03:06:46

Toby does too. He likes to roll in it to for that special stink to impress the lady dogs.
