I like 'Niffer's "Too stupid to be able to be fixed later" line.

dat - Posted - 08/30/2016:  05:40:40

I was right on the edge of that most of my earlier life, not real sure which side of the line, but pretty close either way

All in all, it's turned out OK.

Still sitting up and taking nourishment.

I'm having trouble lately getting into first gear.....inertia seems to rule

OM45GE - Posted - 08/30/2016:  11:55:57

That's a bad problem for a truck dirver.

dat - Posted - 08/30/2016:  12:16:50

Yeah, but once you finally get in first, the rest is rhythm and stay with the motions

My daughter is a truck driver on the east coast. Gave up a full ride music scholarship at Howard to drive.

my cousin is a truck driver, she got fired from every other job she ever had and decided to try that, she does good as long as she doesn't have to talk to many people,   her mouth gets in the way of her thinking many times to often

chuckv97 - Posted - 08/30/2016:  15:05:49

Not sure why that truck has three sticks- never seen that before. I do remember the 2 sticks back 40 years ago when I used to hitch hike a lot. Now I've had an auto-shift for 9 years...easy on the left knee in stop and go traffic.

OM45GE - Posted - 08/30/2016:  15:59:31

I used to drive a Mack with a 5X4 twin stick. Reverse was on the 4 speed auxiliary so you could do fifth going backwards! I spent a lot of time rowing through the gears.

I think the three stick tranny is a Road Ranger, either a 13 or 18 speed. The skull shifter seems like the high-low range. The other two sticks are the main box and the splitter. Personally, I don't see the sense.

DeanT - Posted - 08/30/2016:  16:20:27

And I thought I was something still being able to drive a 4 speed manual Honda....

OM45GE - Posted - 08/30/2016:  18:12:24

Those truck transmissions don't have synchronizes either so you have to match the engine speed with the road speed and gear to make the shift. You either double clutch or don't use the clutch at all.

dat - Posted - 08/31/2016:  05:44:32

a clutch is fer those that squat to pee

OK,   I heard that about a 9mm years ago, it just seemed like a good time to use it  approve

use tha clutch to get into first,  after that just shift

disclaimer,   I would have a truck all over other cars in the road ifin I had to drive on the highway,  my driving has been limited to places I got away with without a license.  so I'm sure not experienced enough to make that joke, but I did anyway

A 13 Speed Road Ranger has a five speed main box with two ranges and splitter gears used to divide the upper range gears into direct and overdrive. First is a granny gear  that's usually only used to start off with heavy loads or on a hill. Most drivers start off in second and many shift patterns show  first as "Low" and second as "first". The range and splitter are usually controlled by air switches. The video I posted showed a guy who replaced the air actuators with shift levers.

So you start off in first or second low range and run through the gears. Then flip the air switch to high range and put the shift lever into first with the splitter air lever in direct. You run out the gear in direct and flip the splitter switch to overdrive. Run that out and shift to the next gear and flip the lever to direct. Repeat until you're in top gear overdrive. If you add it all up, it gives you 13 gear ranges. An 18 speed road ranger adds a sixth main gear so you split the top five for 18 total gear ranges.

It sounds complicated but it gets to be second nature pretty quickly or you stop driving.

I'm pretty happy that I put my key in and the car starts.

My oldest niece is 21 and doesn't have a license.  My sister was recently letting my youngest niece (14) do a little driving in a parking lot.  One day the oldest was with her and she let the oldest drive a little bit.  She almost had an accident, and apparently left plenty of skid marks in the parking lot.  And she got the car up to 50.

When the middle two were learning how to drive, apparently they tried to also teach the oldest.  She apparently almost rolled the car.  The middle kids got out and refuse to be in the car with her anymore.

My dad said she's just generally oblivious.  Like when she pours herself a glass of soda, she'll just start pouring and pay no attention to the fact that the fizz is overflowing the glass.  It's like she starts an action and something in her brain doesn't know when to shut off.  So in the car, she'll step on the gas and never take her foot off (hence hitting 50 in a parking lot).

She's also epileptic and hadn't had any seizures until a few months ago, when she had several within a couple of weeks.  Her doctor wanted to check her blood levels to figure out how to adjust her meds and discovered that she had no meds in her system at all.  Apparently she just stopped taking her medication.  If she's not going to take her medication, it's probably just as well that she doesn't drive.

my truck is an automatic, last one was a standard, the one before that was an automatic, standard on the three before that.   every day driving an automatic isn't bad, I still prefer a standard but I don't mind not shifting either. the automatics now in passanger cars and light trucks do pretty good.

the willys jeep,   I like the standard, but I don't get out of 1st gear much riding through the woods.

even my last half ton pickup I didn't use the clutch much though, just starting up in 1st and reverse.  my bro in law when I was a kid learning to drive his log truck always said I was messing up if I had to mash the clutch.    I don't know the proper way, it's just how he showed me to drive, even small trucks and cars

my oldest sister had some clogged up arteries, she knew one day something was wrong when she started pouring syrup on her pancakes, she saw that there was enough but just couldn't get her self to stop pouring, almost like her mind knew but couldn't control what she was doing.

she went to the doc and got a good artery cleaning / roto rooter in her neck arteries and is back to normal

Yeah, I was just reading something about how sometimes if a person is telling certain types of jokes, it can be indicative of brain damage.  Like if you don't understand sarcasm, it can be a sign of dementia.  Or if you tell lots of puns, but not other jokes, it could be a sign of brain damage.

If she has epilepsy, and the "wiring" in her brain is screwed up, it might explain a lot of the weirdness of her behaviors.  I'm not sure that clearing out her arteries will help--I think this is more neural--so I don't know what can be done.

The youngest is also epileptic and she really doesn't get sarcasm at all.

I haven't figured out if I have any humor or not, so my brain level was probably burnt up on alcohol through the years

Same here.  Our first family phone # had only 4 numbers, and it was a party line.

I can't remember numbers I call frequently because I usually just tap on the contact.

I remember a lot of phone numbers for people and businesses I call here at work, but can't remember the personal and family phone numbers that I should know

I use voice command on my iPhone, like, "call Ethan's mobile" to call my son. I call him several times a day but would have to look the number up.

DeanT - Posted - 09/02/2016:  13:51:32

I could try talking to my flip-phone, but it probably wouldn't listen... I still don't have a iphone

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/02/2016:  14:12:37

I email people more than I talk on the phone. I have limited minutes per month, North America wide on my fliptop phone. Gets expensive if you go over.

dat - Posted - 09/02/2016:  15:10:19

I e mail a lot, my family facebooks, but I don't.  a lot of folks that don't even say hi when you pass in the grocery store want to be friends on facebook   I figure they just wanted the gossip rights

DeanT - Posted - 09/02/2016:  18:18:15

I use face book messenger more than anything these days

DeanT - Posted - 09/05/2016:  05:52:54

I used my flip phone to try and get my wife to beam me home, but it didn't work...
