Living beside a huge ice cold lake can delay spring for sure

The mowing in winter clothes is what I meant Dean.
Chuck, we get the same thing here from the ocean. It keeps the coastal communities warmer in the fall and winter but cooler into early summer. This weekend it was in the 70's here but 20 miles east on the water it was in the 50's.

Yeah...I grew up on the south shore of Lake Ontario. With a north wind things got real chilly in late May, early June.
DeanT - Posted - 05/23/2017: 18:53:14
Same thing growing up in Michigan along the east side of Lake Mi.

Buffalo really gets it being on the east end of Lake Erie with those prevailing westerlies whistling down the length of the lake

This isn't too bad. It's been raining for several hours and is supposed to last into tomorrow. Nice for at least the first 2/3rds of the weekend.

Big,big wind and heavy rain in s. Alberta and n. Montana last night. I'm glad I wasn't pulling an mt

I hadn't heard that rule but it does seem the weather follows it.

We had our long weekend last week,,used to be called Victoria Day,,can't even remember what it's called now. Used to be known as May 24, as in a case of 24 beers.

In Kansas it can be hot and dry for weeks at a time, but it always rains on Memorial day, Labor day, and July 4

There's a huge motorcycle meet up in New Hampshire that I used to go to. It seems to rain at least one day every year. We used to say the roar of the bikes caused the rain.

I've seen bikers wearing their colors marke "Christian Riders"
OM45GE - Posted - 05/27/2017: 05:01:06
I've been a motorcyclist for fifty years and I hate loud bikes.
OM45GE - Posted - 05/27/2017: 07:45:29
Oh yeah. I have to watch Easy Rider again. I haven't seen it in years.
OM45GE - Posted - 05/28/2017: 04:23:18
Most of the biker girls I've known shared the tattoos with the Easy Rider women but not much else.

very quiet here. Thought a lot about my Dad who served in the Dutch and then US Army
chuckv97 - Posted - 05/29/2017: 19:07:36
Yes, lots of honours today for folks who put their lives on the line. My Dad also served in the Dutch army, twice as a reservist...in the 1920's and again in the 1940's.

We have a really nice small town Memorial Day parade here in Andover. My son played in the marching band and I drove my 90 father in law in my convertible. He's a WWII Nave vet
DeanT - Posted - 05/30/2017: 04:40:49
My parents are from Holland (Friesland) and I'm the first generation born in America. My Mom's family got out before the war, My Dad's family came over after the war
OM45GE - Posted - 05/30/2017: 08:38:52
Both sides of my family have been here since the 1,600's but my wife's mother was born in Lithuania. She was Jewish and was there when the Nazis started the first executions of the war. Her parents gave her to a Christian family who raised her as their own. Her parents died in the camps. She and her new family escaped the Russians by fleeing to Germany and were in Dresden when that city was fire bombed by the allies. She came to the US after the war ended. Ended up becoming an ICU and coronary care nurse.
DeanT - Posted - 05/30/2017: 09:08:32
Wow! That's quite a life's journey! My mother's family had Jewish heritage, but they never talked about it. Also may be why they fled before the war. They took it too their grave, and my Mom was just a kid and doesn't remember much, and-or doesn't want to talk about it.
OM45GE - Posted - 05/30/2017: 11:42:42
Lucy didn't talk about it much either until the last few years. She has alluded to some of the really horrible things she's seen but never many details until recently. She says she didn't remember anything about growing up Jewish but recently she had a dream that she was talking with her father in Yiddish. When she woke up, she remembered the Kaddish mourning prayer in Hebrew.
DeanT - Posted - 05/30/2017: 13:24:22
That's pretty amazing. My mom was the same way, not growing up Jewish. One thing I do know for sure, is that my Dad (pure Dutch) marrying a not so pure Dutch Jew girl, caused a lot of trouble between families.
chuckv97 - Posted - 05/30/2017: 14:45:27
Back then they didn't like you marrying someone from another religion. Crazy.
