Supplementing the military pension and social security?

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/20/2017:  12:52:42

Nice work if you can get it

OM45GE - Posted - 09/20/2017:  13:41:58

I don't think I would want to have to depend on music as my only income. That might take the joy out of it for me. As it is, I'm happy playing just for the sake of playing and any $$ is a bonus.

DeanT - Posted - 09/20/2017:  17:48:30

Yes! Supplements my military pension... I'm not old enough for SS yet

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/20/2017:  17:55:46

Do you guys remember who taught you your first guitar licks, chords, tunes, etc.?

OM45GE - Posted - 09/20/2017:  18:12:14

I taught myself at first, just figuring things out off records. Then I started guitar lessons. The man's name escapes me at the moment, Kas Brosnan or something like that. I'd taken piano lessons so I already had basic theory.

DeanT - Posted - 09/20/2017:  18:40:57

Yes. He was named Al, and was a member of a group called the Chevrons. He taught me 12 bar blues, pentatonic scales, bar chords, transposing, and open tunings. Never any formal lessons. All during jams. He loved Hendrix, and would teach me the songs, and I would back him up for hours, so that he could jam out on the leads. It was very movie-esque, where old black man teaches hot shot white kid...

What a great story Dean.

DeanT - Posted - 09/21/2017:  06:29:03

He was a great friend. He used to tell me stories about white pretty-boy bands, stealing black musician's music. A reason he quit music and joined the Air Force, which is where I met him.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/21/2017:  08:33:31

Cool. I took formal lessons on guitar for a year, learning to read standard notation. When I asked the teacher to show me "House of the Rising Sun" and he couldn't , I quit soon after. lol.

DeanT - Posted - 09/21/2017:  13:09:02

I've never learned to read music. I don't have a clue about TAB either. Lyrics with chords is all I know.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/21/2017:  17:52:08

But you know how to use your pentatonic scales for leads

DeanT - Posted - 09/21/2017:  18:25:55

Oh yeah! But over the years I've also developed a more chord based lead strategy.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/22/2017:  02:59:32

I didn't take serious lessons until after I had been playing for almost twenty years. It was interesting learning the theory behind what I had been playing.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/22/2017:  06:32:52

I learned some basic stuff, but didn't get serious on guitar until after I quit playing banjo in the late '80's.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/22/2017:  08:17:53

Aren't you mostly playing banjo now?

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/22/2017:  10:47:27

Yeah, I went back to it about 4 years ago,,,now my guitar playing is rusty. Retirement is nigh.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/22/2017:  12:04:41

It's looking like December 1st will be my last day.

DeanT - Posted - 09/22/2017:  13:13:38

you will wonder how you ever got anything done while you were working!

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/22/2017:  14:07:37

I can't wait for the winter when I'll be off for 5 or 6 months.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/23/2017:  04:23:37

My wife wants me to stay until the end of the year. I just want to get out of there.

DeanT - Posted - 09/23/2017:  07:40:44

She wants your Christmas bonus!

OM45GE - Posted - 09/23/2017:  18:17:01

Exactly. They prorate it based on complete months worked so I get 11/12 of it if I leave December 1st. The extra month won't be a lot of money.

DeanT - Posted - 09/23/2017:  18:58:11

I'm never met anyone who's regretted retiring sooner, rather than later

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/23/2017:  22:48:09

youtu.be/zw8B1zqOIHM   I love job too much, most of the time anyway. I might really miss it

I still keep my CDL and physical current and toy with the idea of driving again.

DeanT - Posted - 09/24/2017:  07:10:56

My Job, (Jet engine mechanic) was like a hobby on steroids. I Loved it, but have never regretted taking the earliest retirement they offered me. I'm in the best physical shape of my life, and still young enough to enjoy it.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/24/2017:  16:04:52

I am soooooo looking forward to it.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/24/2017:  16:49:47

That's also what I need to do,,is get in better shape. I sit all day and munch on stuff. Do a few exercises and walk a bit.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/25/2017:  02:36:08

I definitely didn't get enough excercize when I was driving over the road.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/25/2017:  12:50:39

Here are a couple pics I took ystrdy on my way west to Vancouver

OM45GE - Posted - 09/25/2017:  18:22:08

That's lovely - and one of the things I miss about driving.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/26/2017:  20:24:15

People travel from all over the world to see some of those sights

(Bill, you better get over to Fenway and rally the troops)

I know. The last couple of games have been pathetic.

DeanT - Posted - 09/27/2017:  22:05:58

I just drove to Michigan Monday, and back Wednesday... 15 hours one way...I don't know how you guys do that every day.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/28/2017:  05:20:56

You get into a rhythm. I find it's also something that takes working up to. Just like a couch potato couldn't run a marathon without training.

DeanT - Posted - 09/28/2017:  07:01:48

That makes a lot of sense! I did use caffeine assist

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/28/2017:  07:25:30

Like most jobs, you build up stamina. At first I used to take more breaks.

DeanT - Posted - 09/28/2017:  15:23:08

I would need a dog to keep me company, Like Jerry Reed in Smokey and the Bandit. What was his dog's name?

dmiller - Posted - 09/29/2017:  07:25:26

That was Fred. They showed that movie on TV the other day. I wish there were more films like that being made (these days).

DeanT - Posted - 09/29/2017:  10:53:04

Yeah!!! Fred! I always wanted a Bassett after the movie

OM45GE - Posted - 09/29/2017:  19:47:47

I completely forgot about the dog.

DeanT - Posted - 09/30/2017:  06:32:08

There was a Bassett in Dukes of Hazard too, I think his name was Flash

OM45GE - Posted - 09/30/2017:  06:41:31

Basset hounds always look friendly to me.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/30/2017:  08:30:25

Do they slobber?

OM45GE - Posted - 09/30/2017:  16:06:46

May the force be with you.

DeanT - Posted - 09/30/2017:  16:42:56

The singer from my bar band has one... slobber is an understatement!

OM45GE - Posted - 09/30/2017:  17:34:49

We had a Newfoundland when I was a kid that produced gallons of the stuff.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/30/2017:  18:07:19

I sometimes rub a bit of peanut butter on the flank of my daughter’s dog, a boxer. He twists himself around just barely reaching the peanut butter with his tongue. By the time he’s done there’s slobber all over the place!

DeanT - Posted - 09/30/2017:  19:21:59

I put peanut butter in my greyhound's rawhides, so she chews them to keep her teeth clean
