I believe I would have to go up in the mountains and be a hermit if anything happened to separate us

paulac7 - Posted - 05/08/2013:  14:48:04

I'm about ~150 miles SW of Mifflinburg...Central PA is pretty country, dat....As to being a hermit....I'm pretty much one now.....LOL

It was july when we went up there, temp was nice in the day and we had to pull a blanket up in the evening.  most vivid memory was drinking ice cold water that was pouring out of a cracked rock on the side of a mountian, that was some of the coldest, cleanest water I believe I have ever drank.   but then again I was probably about 10 or 12 Genesses down by then

Back in the day (35 years ago), I'd go on canoe camping trips in the BWCA (Boundary Waters Canoe Area) that go from here in Minney-soda and up into Canada.  We all had our "Sierra cups" (I think they're still called that) handy, and anytime we got thirsty we'd just dip the cup into whatever lake we were on.  Pristine, clear (and clean) H2O.  No water filters, and no worries.

Back then, crossing the border (by canoe) was a whole lot easier than it is these days.  The Canadian customs office was a little log building on an island (if it was a "big" lake), and you were supposed to stop to "shake and howdy" with the customs officer and let them know you were in their country.  You weren't fined or prosecuted (or anything like that) if you didn't.  It was more of a social thing than anything else so they could receive visitors and share a cup of coffee and shoot the s*** about fishing/ paddling/ camping sites/ etc.

Back in the day---in the early 70's....I remember the 'sulphur creeks' that were very common around here--wouldn't want a cup of that...YUCK!!  dead

Plus they stank to high heaven....sometimes the good old days..weren't....LOL

we had a lot of sulfur in South Louisiana, we would go out coon hunting and come across some pretty foul smelling water at times

paulac7 - Posted - 05/09/2013:  06:07:23

This area used to be pretty ugly looking what with the strip-mining, yellow water, boney dumps, timber cutting, gas well rig locations and what have you....over the past 20 years a lot of 'reclamation' work has taken place...so its not as bad as it was....now it's much better looking, but no jobs...

dat - Posted - 05/09/2013:  07:04:20

there is a coal mine close to here,  above ground strip mine, but when they finish it looks nicer than when they started, they plant trees, dig ponds, have new man made marsh land for the birds.   it's amazing the time and money spent to re-landscape the land

DeanT - Posted - 05/09/2013:  07:13:47

In Kansas they plant telephone poles along the highways

dat - Posted - 05/09/2013:  07:33:53

look on the bright side,   telephone poles are better than no scenery at all

paulac7 - Posted - 05/09/2013:  10:48:08

Do you count the telephone poles when you're going down the road??

dat - Posted - 05/09/2013:  13:05:27

Not while I'm driving, I tend to steer towards what ever I'm watching if I'm not watching the road

DeanT - Posted - 05/09/2013:  13:23:40

since everyone has cell phones, why do we still need telephone poles?

paulac7 - Posted - 05/09/2013:  13:25:29

To give the people with cell phones who are texting and not paying attention something to drive into??

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/09/2013:  13:35:29

You can do some nice trail riding along power lines.

dat - Posted - 05/09/2013:  15:02:51

my bride finally got me a cell phone, I use it as an alarm clock then leave it on the dresser at home most of the time

I say she finally got me one, not that she hadn't tried before, I finally said OK

We dumped our land line, and went to cell phones in 2002. I always turn mine off for gigs, then forget to turn it back on. A week later I wonder how come no one ever calls me...

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/09/2013:  18:42:01

I'm not sure I would notice if no one called me for a week. Or even a month.

dat - Posted - 05/10/2013:  05:53:50

we don't get a signal at home, but we still canceled our home phone

DeanT - Posted - 05/10/2013:  06:11:53

I tell everyone that e-mail is more reliable way to get a hold of me

dat - Posted - 05/10/2013:  06:24:41

here too, but at home I'm hardly ever inside even if we still had a land line

DeanT - Posted - 05/10/2013:  08:19:32

with e-mail I can do stuff on my time. I stopped carrying my cell phone when I was out running. Nothing like being 10 miles from home and your shorts start ringing...

dat - Posted - 05/10/2013:  08:22:13

When I first got mine I was out in the barn changing a light fixture, I had it on vibrate 'cause I don't like to hear it ring.  about the time I reached up and touched the wire it vibrated and made me jump out of my skin

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/10/2013:  11:55:21

I've had my phone for years and I still jump when it vibrates.

Maybe if I got more than 5 or 6 phone calls a year I might be more used to it.

dat - Posted - 05/10/2013:  13:53:06

I keep mine on vibrate, I don't like the sound of it ringing

paulac7 - Posted - 05/10/2013:  15:05:47

The vibrate kind of creeps me out....but then, nobody calls me either....so I guess it's a moot point...

DeanT - Posted - 05/10/2013:  17:03:45

I hate texting even worse

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/12/2013:  16:36:51

I don't mind texting but I don't know that many people to text with. DP and I used to text a lot then he got a girlfriend and had someone else to text.

dat - Posted - 05/14/2013:  06:07:06

at home I don't get a good enough signal to talk, but I can text with one bar.

DeanT - Posted - 05/14/2013:  10:39:03

stupid phones are too small for my eyesight, so I'm screwed before I even start...

dat - Posted - 05/14/2013:  11:05:18

me too, bad enough to have to learn to use the thing, I'm gonna have to get some glasses and smaller fingers to work it

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/14/2013:  13:25:52

I got a blackberry with a keyboard to replace my previous blackberry with a keyboard. I know that blackberry is kind of bottom of the totem pole for smart phones but I really don't like the touch screens so I got it mostly for the keyboard.

My eye sight is pretty good and, from what my folks say, I'm not anticipating needing reading glasses anytime soon. I think my folks were like 10 years older than I am now when they started needing reading glasses and one of my grandfathers didn't get reading glasses until he was like 70.

I went to the eye doctor last year and she was almost upset by the fact I didn't need reading glasses yet. "Well, you definitely will by next year," she told me. "No one gets to 43 and doesn't need reading glasses."

I dunno. I suppose I could take a sudden nose dive in the next few months but so far I'm not noticing any problems at all.

dat - Posted - 05/14/2013:  13:56:19

I've just noticed in the past year that I might need them, I can still see well close and far away, but it takes me longer to focus when changing from far to near than it used to, looking out from close to far is still a easy focus change

DeanT - Posted - 05/14/2013:  13:58:46

No line transition bifocals for me and I still can't see

dat - Posted - 05/15/2013:  06:55:01

try a Leupold, they bring images close and clear

DeanT - Posted - 05/15/2013:  09:31:57

They call me binocular face already... I don't need any thicker lenses!

dat - Posted - 05/15/2013:  09:59:38

I used to wear some pretty thick beer goggles

DeanT - Posted - 05/15/2013:  14:52:51

I was mad they didn't have perfectly round glasses... I wanted John Lennon glasses

dat - Posted - 05/16/2013:  06:49:21

my sister in law wears blue round sunglasses, she looks like she should be smoking sumthin

Scaggs7 - Posted - 05/28/2013:  19:24:26

what should I do. I can't feel the vibration and can't hear the ring . Am I too old for a phone???

DeanT - Posted - 05/28/2013:  23:44:01

consider yourself lucky

dat - Posted - 05/29/2013:  10:39:21

DeanT - Posted - 05/29/2013:  16:30:31
