I-80 can be scary around dusk when all the suicidal deer come out.

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/23/2018:  21:31:15

Especially in PA,,lots of woodlands there

OM45GE - Posted - 02/24/2018:  03:21:35

Yep. They don’t know how to deal with motor vehicles.

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/24/2018:  07:50:30

I have deer whistles on my vehicles, but I’ve heard that sometimes they spook the deer so much that ,disoriented, they run onto the highway instead of the other direction. Never had that happen to me though. I’ve seen grazing antelope hundreds of yards away raise their heads quickly and start moving away.

I've always wondered about those things... lots of deer crashes in Kansas in the fall

dmiller - Posted - 02/26/2018:  08:53:05

I remember when those "deer alert" things first came out.  The price for them then was right around 40 bucks for a pair.  Now they are less than 10 bucks for a pair.  Yes - - they work.

OM45GE - Posted - 02/27/2018:  06:22:29

I read an interesting article about deer behavior and vehicle crashes. One thing that stood out was that deer will leave a safe area to cross a road and then, when a vehicle alarms them, run back to the safe area, even if that means running back onto the road and into the path of a vehicle. It also talked about how mindless they are during the springtime mating rut.

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/27/2018:  13:47:41

Not sure if that article you read holds true - I’ve had many deer cross in front of me and partway across they hear the truck and get spooked, but they continue on , not retreating back. Rutting season is crazy, especially with moose. I’ve had to stop for moose ambling down the middle of the road at night.

I also find moose harder to see at night than deer, even though they're much bigger. I think it may be because they're darker.

chuckv97 - Posted - 03/01/2018:  08:44:31

Darker and no white on them. Buggers are a definite hazard. We have these “moose bumpers” on our trucks, which lowers damage expenses.

DeanT - Posted - 03/01/2018:  10:14:09

wow, looks like train locomotive!

OM45GE - Posted - 03/01/2018:  11:51:35

How do you get the banjo to stay on the hood when you're driving?

chuckv97 - Posted - 03/01/2018:  12:03:34

Hah,,....err, what banjo...?

chuckv97 - Posted - 03/01/2018:  12:06:11

Hi Dean, hope u Don’r mind- I mentioned your name on another thread ,,about using three fingers and thumb on banjo. It’s in the Playing Advice: Scruggs playing thread.

DeanT - Posted - 03/01/2018:  14:40:32

Hey no problem... I hardly ever check anymore, I'll see if I can find it!

OM45GE - Posted - 03/01/2018:  17:53:59

I use three fingers on guitar, but never have on banjo. I'm not sure why.

DeanT - Posted - 03/01/2018:  18:31:50

My ring finger is way better than my index finger... no way I'm going to let it go to waste!

OM45GE - Posted - 03/02/2018:  05:03:22

I'm the opposite, my ring finger isn't as strong as the middle or pointer. I also have a bad strike angle with my ring finger if I'm wearing bluegrass picks.

chuckv97 - Posted - 03/02/2018:  05:23:02

I had to really train my ring finger on guitar

OM45GE - Posted - 03/02/2018:  05:33:19

I really don't use it properly. Mostly I use it for the high e-string if my middle finger is otherwise occupied or when I'm plucking four note chords pizzicato.

DeanT - Posted - 03/02/2018:  13:41:10

what's a high e string? :) (my tele has been tuned open G for 30 years...)

OM45GE - Posted - 03/02/2018:  16:09:15

It's funny, I've been playing a lot in DADGAD and that's how my guitar was tuned when I wrote that post.

DeanT - Posted - 03/03/2018:  14:09:12

what's crazy is that folks think that since I've been playing in bands for years, I'm supposed to be really good on guitar... so occasionally I'm handed a guitar, and expected to dazzle folks...HA!!! I have to hand it back and explain that I haven't played standard tuning in nearly 40 years, don't remember a thing about it, and refuse to re-tune anyone else's guitar.

OM45GE - Posted - 03/03/2018:  17:26:49

That's funny. Can you play songs in any key with your guitar tuned to open G?

DeanT - Posted - 03/03/2018:  20:47:13

Yes, and same with my banjo. Never had any trouble with any key. Keep in mind, I've only got 5 strings on my Tele. The low-e string was gone, they day I read how Keith tuned his Tele. I've never missed that string...

OM45GE - Posted - 03/04/2018:  13:53:35

I knew you had done that. I do too many finger style arrangements that use all six strings.

DeanT - Posted - 03/05/2018:  00:43:26

I'm lazy :)

chuckv97 - Posted - 03/05/2018:  06:07:43

Marathon runners could never be accused o laziness.

OM45GE - Posted - 03/05/2018:  10:01:01

Isn't that the truth.

DeanT - Posted - 03/05/2018:  13:40:13

Thanks you guys :) I'm so tired from training, I don't have the energy to reach a 6th string :)

chuckv97 - Posted - 03/05/2018:  14:06:42

Hah...that’s my excuse for not exercising too much...I want to save my energy for playing

DeanT - Posted - 03/05/2018:  18:43:10

I started the exercise when my arthritis was getting pretty bad... 10 years ago. My rheumatologist said use it or loose it. She had NO IDEA how literal I would take that. Now I'm exercising over 20 hours a week, off all the meds since 2012, and all things considered, the arthritis is gone.

OM45GE - Posted - 03/07/2018:  03:24:32

I love physical activity. I'm not in your league Dean, but yesterday I did seven miles walking and skied three hours - 21 runs and about 9,000 vertical feet. If I miss a day, I just don't feel good.

DeanT - Posted - 03/07/2018:  10:16:13

wow, I bet you can feel it today!

chuckv97 - Posted - 03/07/2018:  10:21:21

Wow....You guys are starting to shame me into exercising more

DeanT - Posted - 03/07/2018:  12:29:11

It makes all the difference in the world. My kid sister won't exercise, has many of the health issues I had 10 years ago... and she is now hopelessly hooked on meds.

chuckv97 - Posted - 03/07/2018:  14:11:14

I do some, more in winter when I’m off work. I’m still not on any prescription pills, but that’s more from luck and genetics

I actually feel fine today. No aches or pains. I'm planning to go again Friday. We'll see how I feel then.

DeanT - Posted - 03/07/2018:  16:11:44

That means you're own great shape!

OM45GE - Posted - 03/07/2018:  16:19:11

I used to feel it in my worn out knees but I got some carbon fiber boots and a new pair of really light skis and it made a huge difference.

Oddly, it made a big difference riding the lift when all the weight of the skis and boots is hanging off your knees. They're much higher performing too.

DeanT - Posted - 03/08/2018:  14:05:44

My bike is carbon fiber too... amazing stuff!

OM45GE - Posted - 03/10/2018:  04:39:20

It really is incredible. I've got a carbon fiber guitar. I don't like it as much as my wood guitars, but it's still reasonably nice to play and is pretty much worry free if I'm playing an outdoor gig or traveling and need to leave it in the car.

DeanT - Posted - 03/10/2018:  07:12:15

or playing outside in the rain, or spill beer on it!

OM45GE - Posted - 03/10/2018:  11:28:16

One of their ads showed a guy tubing behind a boat playing the guitar.

DeanT - Posted - 03/10/2018:  15:11:13

I've got carbon wheels on my race bike... and they never go out of true.

OM45GE - Posted - 03/11/2018:  16:32:18

What kind of amp do you play your Tele through Dean?

DeanT - Posted - 03/11/2018:  17:39:04

Roland Cube 60 or mini cube. I used to have a Roland AC 60, but it was gutless.

OM45GE - Posted - 03/12/2018:  18:32:27

Roland makes some nice stuff. We have a Roland keyboard and amplifier.

DeanT - Posted - 03/13/2018:  13:46:21

We have a super cheapo Phonics PA that has been to hell and back, sounds great, and keeps going and going and going. Before that we went through two Kustoms, and a Mackie... higher priced, and averaged a couple years a piece. Also interesting... I played for several years with a SM57 banjo mic... and it was never very hot, and sound quality was marginal. The cheapo Phonics PA came with a couple cheap ass mics... super HOT, and sounds way better than the SM57 ever dreamed of. Still using them today, at every gig.

It's great to find a setup that works.
