Notes: In bluegrass banjo it is useful to be able to emply several different roll patterns for playing an F chord, and here are some options for your dining an dancing pleasure. To see and hear some of them in action, check out my tabs for June Apple (https://www.banjohangout.org/tab/browse.asp?m=detail&v=24277) and Little Maggie (https://www.banjohangout.org/tab/browse.asp?m=detail&v=24290).

Notes: Based on the playing of Herb Pedersen from the Linda Ronstadt recording, this J. D. Souther favorite is played in the key of D with the banjo in a G tuning with the fifth string tuned to A. The role of the banjo is primarily that of backup to Ronstadt’s vocals.

Notes: Fancy Dance, from Buckley's New Banjo Method of 1860. Not actually in standard open G, but in minstrel tuning eAEG#B. Perfectly playable in Briggs tuning of dGDF#A.
To play on a modern banjo, tune your fourth string down by two semitones and you'll be in a transposition of minstrel tuning.

Notes: My first arrangement. An old German childrens song which happens to be the song we use to sing my daughter to sleep each night. It is called "Das Farbenlied" (the colours song) or "Grün, grün, grün" (Green, green, green). There is one colour in each verse and the lyrics repeat all the time:
"Grün, grün, grün sind alle meine Kleider,
grün, grün, grün ist alles, was ich hab.
Darum lieb' ich alles, was so grün ist,
weil mein Schatz ein Jäger ist."
(Green ... are all my cloths, green is everything I own, this is why I love everything green, because my darling is a hunter)
It goes on with all types of colours and matching professions, black => chimney sweeper, red => fireman, yellow => postman, blue => sailor. You get the idea...

Notes: Farewell Blues, an old swing tune made famous as a bluegrass banjo instrumental by Earl Scruggs, in a more jazz-worthy key: Eb major, although like Earls version it has that funky b3 major chord instead of the swingy b3 diminished chord. The key should not be as much a subject of worry as is the intense hand contortions needed to get the drop-C chord (e.g. 5567, 4th to 1st strings) sound in open-G; down the neck this is a real STRECH! It took me a looottt of practising to be able to make the chords up to speed, but it is worth it; it's a real neat sound. The other hard lick is the tag lick such as the one in measures 3 & 7. This one takes a little practice. The single string licks are mostly standard Reno single string licks, although there's one of my own at the beginning of the 5th break. This tune will definitely take some practice, but it's a real firecracker once you get it right. I shamelessly like this tune in Eb much better than drop-C tuning, key of C. Has a Rhythm Guitar & Bass rhythm track. Have fun!

Notes: 'Farewell Trion' - James Bryan learned Farewell Trion from Mack Blaylock (1914 – 1987). They are from the same region near Lookout Mountain in Alabama. Mack learned it from his great-uncle, Joe Blaylock (born 1854) who had worked at the mill in Trion, Georgia but was laid off and walked back home to Alabama. The original tune had two parts. James added the third part in the 1980’s. Several musicians have since recorded it, a notable one being Chris Coole with Ivan Rosenburg on a CD in 2010 named “Farewell Trion.” (thanks to Janet Barton for history of this tune)

Notes: Hi, this is the first tab I’ve written so I hope it’s legible. I based it off of Clifton Hick’s version (he calls in the devil song), of which he has a tutorial on YouTube. Since he didn’t have any tabs available, I figured I might as well write some for myself and stick it up here. Feel free to ask questions to clarify about my chicken scratch.

Notes: Here's Fiddler's Blues, an old Fiddlin' Arthur Smith tune in D. It is one of the most haunting tunes I know, making extensive use of that odd flat-five note (Ab in this case). It is quite slow, and has a march-like quality (in rhythm, not melody!), which is slightly less exaggerated in the original recording by the use of sock-rhythm guitar rather than the standard bass-chord bluegrass/old time rhythm guitar. It's not particularly hard, and because it is slow the single string parts can (and should) be played by picking repeatedly with the thumb rather than TI or TIM (I have included right-hand fingering in this tab for this reason). There are a lot of bends in this tune, to replicate the many slides Smith used in the recording. I like to put a D-tuner on the low D, set the stop down to slightly above a C, and bend from the b7 up to the D in the second part, to replicate FA Smith's slide there. I highly recommend listening to the original recording! Has a Rhythm Guitar & Bass rhythm track. Have fun!

Notes: Here is a three-finger version of Fiddling Around. The TablEdit file contains both banjo and guitar, while the pdf version only shows the banjo (and the guitar chords). The tab is based on a transcription from the fiddle version in David Brody's The Fiddler's Fakebook. The first part is rather banjo friendly, but the second part contains some "shuffling" which can be played in several other ways on the banjo. Just use your own imagination and work out something own if you feel for it.

Notes: These are finger warm up exercises based on ones I used to do for guitar. Play *slowly*, with metronome or play along with Tabledit, until you can play them perfectly. If you're making mistakes as you play, you're playing it fast. Increase speed gradually over time. I did this with standard G tuning, which is how it sounds best, but this is about fingering, not melody, so technically the tuning of your banjo doesn't matter.

Notes: Here is an excellent old fiddle tune, "Fisher's Hornpipe", arranged for melodic style banjo in the original key of F major. While not an unknown fiddle tune, it's not overly common and is one of my personal favorites. It's relatively hard, and I perpetually have trouble with the timing. There are two markedly different ways to play "Fisher's", one is at a medium tempo with a pronounced bounce, the other is at a relatively fast tempo with straight 8th notes. The former would be more of a dancing style, the latter a bluegrass style. There are two places in the tune which have a II7 (G7) chord, which may or may not be played by the guitarist. Has a Rhythm Guitar & Bass rhythm track. Have fun!

Notes: Here is an excellent old fiddle tune, "Fisher's Hornpipe", arranged for melodic style banjo in the now-common key of D major. It is a straight forward, entirely melody based version of the tune. In the first part there is a quick (1/2 measure) II7 (E7) chord, which may or may not be played by the rhythm guitarist; the melody does not change, regardless. There is a little bit of "cross-picking" (crossing one right-hand finger over another) and dropping the middle finger down to the 2nd string. Has a Rhythm Guitar & Bass rhythm track. Have fun!

Notes: FH can be played in several different keys, but it works well in G, which takes advantage of some standard melodic positions and runs. I took the variation on the A part, starting in measure 9, from Byron Berline's version in his fiddle album with the Dillards. You will note that it anticipates the B part and that its chord structure is slightly different from the standard A part, in measures 1 to 9.
Berline and the Dillards played it in D, and I transposed it to G. I hope I captured the feel of his version.

Notes: Here's a lovely little tune with a great title written by Steve Huber of Huber Banjos fame, and one that involves use of Keith/Scruggs tuners. (For simplicity I will refer just to Keith tuners.) It is problematic to tab the Keith tuner changes in TablEdit, and so I have followed my usual practice: I have tabbed the tune to show the melody notes without tuners (i.e., the notes as played on fretted strings 3 and 4), but I added the protocol for using Keith tuners on open strings (2 and 3) above the tab. So you can still play it if you do not have Keith tuners, although it sounds much better with the tuners. The structure of the tune is AAB, and I have included a second version of the B part, this one up the neck. Although similar to Huber's version, this is my own arrangement of Five in the Morning and not a note-for-note transcription of his.

The export from Guitar Pro 8 down to Guitar Pro 6 ruined the de-tuning notation, so I'm including the Guitar Pro 8 file with a renamed extension. It's the file that says "CHANGE EXTENSION" - you need to rename it from .gtp to .gp.

Notes: In the multi-CD set "Newport Folk Festival: Best of Bluegrass 1959-66," Don Stover played a great break to Flint Hill Special employing a descending melody on the fourth string. It reminds me of a ball bouncing down a staircase ("descending Victorian stairs," a line from Jesse Winchester), and I refer to it as Stover's Staircase break. The repetitive right-hand pattern is 4-2-1-2. I have tabbed out an approximation of Stover's Staircase break here, and you can find a variation of the Staircase break in my tab to FMB elsewhere on BHO.

Notes: A 3-finger arrangement of Vasen's Flippen. The A part is a down the neck, fairly scruggsy solo version of the melody. The B part goes up the neck, and is rather more like how Punch Brothers do it, albeit massively simplified from Noam P's part! Capoed up 2 for A.

Notes: I really enjoy playing this song. Dave Hum has a great video on YouTube. I tried to tab the song the way he played it. As you can tell, I'm new to writing tablature. I'm still working on learning how to time the notes in the tabs. You can hear the proper timing from Dave's video. Dave used a capo on the second fret, Standard tuning. I like to slow this song down on YouTube in the settings to about 70% to comfortably play along.
There's a really great extended melodic run about half way through the song, which I tabbed out. In the video you can hear a fan cheering Dave in the background while he's playing this run, which is an eyebrow raiser.
Also, I purposely chose to tab this song because the original backing track is available from Dave Hum's website. I love his backing tracks! Enjoy.

Notes: Omer Forster's haunting tune "Flowery Girls" has been an all time favorite of mine ever since I first had the pleasure of listening to it. This is my attempt at a note for note transcription of the original 2-finger version from his 1977 recording, created with a little help from the "Amazing Slow Downer" app, and with the goal of tabbing out each and every note on the original recording. Omer’s creative use of open strings that became apparent in the process, especially in the up the neck parts, further deepened my admiration for this unique piece.
The left hand positions in the up the neck parts are my suggestion based on what makes the most sense and what feels the most natural to play to me.

Notes: A 3-finger arrangement of one of my favorite old-time fiddle tunes. Seen a lot of clawhammer versions, but not many 3-finger. Arrangement is kind of a mish-mash of versions of "Fly Around" and versions of "Western Country/Susananah Gal." Some consider them different tunes, others the same. This arrangement is syncopated enough that the melody will fit around either tune (if they are in fact different tunes) — to my ear anyway.

Notes: This is a banjo arrangement of the Fly Away Medley by Mark Hayes. I was asked to perform this in church, so I had to figure out a tablature arrangement. Some is based on tabs from others, but most, I wrote myself. This is the first time I have done this, and the first time I performed in public (possibly my last!). This file was corrected and improved 5-9-2011.

Notes: All of us want to play FMB at speed. Trying to speed up too fast is difficult because it only SOUNDS like FMB at warp 9. Slowing it down and adding some swing makes it fun and almost turns it into a new song - except it's not. Play it with some swing, and when the speed comes to you it'll sound like FMB! This was tabbed on the fly so it's not completely accurate - but it's close enough.

Note: measures 11 and 15 show both the open G and D string E note struck simultaneously. The E is a dead note, and not played, but having it there makes it sound "right". Lots of inventive scale ideas, and a couple of things that are definitely unique. have fun with it!

Notes: Don Stover played a marvelous descending melody as one of his breaks to Flint Hill Special. The right-hand pattern is a repetitive 4-2-1-2. Although I have not been able to find a version by Stover, or anybody else for that matter, playing this melodic sequence in Foggy Mountain Breakdown, the pattern works well with FMB. This is my arrangement of FMB with a number of embellishments. The second break includes a Stover-like sequence.

Notes: These are a couple of original breaks for Foggy Mountain Breakdown played in melodic style. I also use measure 13 as a kickoff for melodic tunes such as Sailor's Hornpipe. The first measure or two of each break are also very useful and can be used for a lot of things. Measures 9 and 15 are a couple of melodic fills that I use very frequently. As you can see, there are a number of things that can be useful in your playing beyond just using them for Foggy Mountain Breakdown.

Notes: This tab contains a full transcription of Foggy Mountain Special based of the version on the Foggy Mountain Jamboree album. It contains most bluegrass instruments (Banjo, guitar, violin, mandolin & bass) with their respective solos in the song. The mandolin solo is not very accurate and the guitar backup can sometimes be a bit weird in my opinion, but I am still learning. If anyone has any tips on how to make dobro backup, please make a comment, as dobro is very interesting. I don't have a dobro at home but I have the other bluegrass instruments, hence why I have transcribed for a full band.
The fiddle backup was also a bit tricky and I tried to something fancy with the double bass at 01:09, but don't mind that. For some reason also the mandolin midi gets changed to a shamisen midi, and I don't know why.

Notes: When I first heard Follow the Leader decades ago, the chord structure and title led me to speculate that it is Don Reno’s rejoinder to Foggy Mountain Breakdown. Whatever Reno had in mind, his nifty tune has stood the test of time, and the single-string work certainly blew my mind when I heard it. This tablature is a way I tend to play FtL, with a blending of Scruggs, melodic, and single-string styles and employing some of my own favorite licks. It most definitely is not faithful to Reno’s version, which is much more strongly wedded to repetitive forward rolls.

Notes: This is based on the original Reno & Smiley recording. It's heavily syncopated and very striking: Reno accented a lot of melody notes on the offbeats, also brushing with his thumb, letting the banjo ring into the downbeat, and his staccato single-string work is legendary stuff, a bold stylistic departure from Earl's approach. This is one of Reno's signature tunes, perhaps his answer to Scruggs' 'Foggy Mountain Breakdown'. (See page 1 and 2.)

Notes: Foochow's Shanghai has been my first compostion for the tenor banjo, which I have dedicated to my good Scottish banjo friend Bill Somerville from Glasgow.
It should adapt an Chinese touch, in style to Chinatown, My Chinatown.
This tune was published in my second music book for the tenor banjo.
Chrille's Hot & Jazzy Melodies For The Tenor Banjo Vol. II deals with wonderful compositions for the tenor banjo, which present the banjo in all it's characteristics. These are the songs: St. Louis Blues (W.C. Handy), Pepper & Salt (Ralph Colicchio), Foochow's Shanghai (Christian Loos), The Savoy Rag (Pete Mandell), The Ghost Of The Banjo (Roy Smeck) & My Lady Jazz (A.J. Weidt). As a first impression of the book you can enjoy my composition Foochow's Shanghai.
As always you have a piano accompaniment on CD in three different speed levels.

I find the sound of the C position more pleasing than versions out of the D position, and accordingly I have modified the tab for drop C tuning. The A part is similar to Joe’s tab, with the addition of drop C. Note that the single string section in measures 8 and 9 (and 16 and 17) is tricky, because it involves crossing the thumb over the index finger; I have tabbed the right-hand fingering I employ. The up-the-neck section of the B part is similar to Joe’s version, whereas the down-the-neck section is a bit of a departure that is reminiscent of John Hickman’s playing. About the title: Forked Deer has a number of potential meanings, such as the configuration of a deer’s antlers, a county in Virginia, a river in Tennessee, or a sexually aroused ruminant. Feel free to pick your favorite interpretation.

Notes: Fortune is normally played in the key of D with the banjo in Double D tuning, In the YouTube video that demonstrates this rendition (https://youtu.be/of1B0qISLPE), I am playing a minstrel banjo that is in the relative Double D tuning, but is pitched down 7 half steps from Double D (dGDGA), putting it in the key of G.

Notes: A little game to work on Scruggs Style speed (I think). I heard a classical guitarist talking about tremolo speed. Tremolo on a classical guitar involves playing a rapid succession of index (i) - middle (m) - ring (a). He pointed out that even though the combination of the notes is rapid each finger digit is only striking the string say twice a measure, or once a measure. My theory is that if you increase the tempo on the index only to get the timing right on and then switch to middle only and then thumb only and then start mixing combinations of thumb + index only, or thumb + middle only, or index + middle only, then when you finally do thumb, index, middle you "might" be able to play a little faster than before.

Notes: A very pretty waltz written by Phil Cunningham. You can find a great recording of this tune on the "Transatlantic Sessions 3" DVD, featuring Aly Bain and Jerry Douglas. (No banjo to be seen, but we can remedy that!) I noticed just recently on listening to the original again, that I was missing a descending chord progression in the B part, so and have rectified it! B part is now complete with a "C-Am7-D-G change, as opposed to C - - G, which is how the tab went until now.... :-)

At section E, I am pretty sure that he is hitting a bunch more Cs and I'll eventually get those in there. I put the pdf and gp5 versions up there in case someone gets froggy and wants to help.

Notes: Sawmill tuning capoed two. This is based on the source recording of Henry Reed. I play the high (A) part first in the Dorian mode, then on the second time through, I play a G# rather than a G natural on the 3rd string, as Mr Reed did. His version had a lot of variations in it, and I tried to capture some of that. A video of me playing this rendition is posted on my YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/h7t_OAubYVE
