Notes: I wrote this melody for our contra dance band. It is based on the chord backup for a Scottish tune called 'Kohler's Hornpipe', which sounds a little like Pachelbel's Canon. Kohler's Hornpipe is sometimes called 'Pachelbel's Frolics'. The recording here is Greg Pelletier (banjo) and Jesse Partridge (guitar)

Notes: This is Ben Eldridge's banjo intro to "Pan American" from the Seldom Scene album "Old Train". A good friend of mine asked me to write this out for him, so I figured I'd just post it here. This is the first half - the last half is the same.
I have tabbed this out in G in open G tuning. On the album it is in the key of B, which means you will have to capo up to the fourth fret to play this intro in the same key as the Scene. -John

Notes: This started out on the 3 treble strings as an exploration of the relations between minor 7th chords, diminished chords, and augmented chords. When I added bass notes on the 4th string, however, a tune emerged, a solely chordal excursion without any licks or rolls. Unfortunately the tablature does not fully capture the timing and the swing of the tune as played, but it’s the best I could do. Eventually I hope to post a video, and then you will hear how it should sound. I wrote the tune for my youngest daughter, Tobey, a community health nurse who routinely administers vaccinations, often to immigrant families. She is my health-care hero.

Notes: Not a particularly interesting polka, but one that can be enthusiastically played by beginner and seasoned veteran alike, and usually quite appreciated by the audience. Banjo difficulty is somewhere between beginner and intermediate, but there are a few moderately difficult moves like the m-arpeggio and leading with a thumb in clawhammer style. This together with Britches Full Of Stitches, and Newmarket Polka, is an entire 3-song set of polkas with for the 5-string banjo in standard tuning - (capoed up two frets to match the fiddles.) Have fun wit' it b'ys!

Notes: π (sometimes written pi) is a mathematical constant that is the ratio of any Euclidean circle's circumference to its diameter. π is approximately equal to 3.14. π is an irrational number its decimal representation never ends and never repeats. I took the 204 first decimals and made music of. 1 became a G, 2 an A and som on so 8 became a high g (fifth string), 9 a high A and 0 a high B.

Notes: This tablature strays a bit from the traditional single string notation, because it follows the record recorded by Sonny Osborne at the age of 14 when he was a bluegrass boy. You may interchange the long notes for the more difficult single string notes if you wish. The tablature is not exactly as in the mp3, it is a bit simpler on page 2. Taught to me by Alan O'Bryant at Midwest Banjo Camp in 2011.

Notes: Here is Bill Monroe's classic instrumental. The first break approximates Earl Scruggs's version. The second break is an up-the-neck version (heresy! Earl did not play a high break), and the third break includes some melodic stuff that lets you keep the drive going while improvising a bit. Note that I am using Flatt and Scruggs's chord progression, where the 1 chord (G) and then the 5 chord (D) are played in measures 7 and 8, respectively. Monroe's original version held the 1 chord (G) in both measures 7 and 8, although he later played it with a 7 chord (F) and then 5 chord (D) in measures 7 and 8, respectively. I prefer Flatt and Scruggs's version, which is mid-way in complexity between Monroe's original stripped-down version and his later one. Although I have tabbed it out in the key of G, you would normally capo up 2 to play it in A.

Notes: The banjo is set in the minstrel tuning (dGDF#A) which is the Standard ("Drop") C tuning pitched down 5 half steps. The C chord form of the Drop C tuning becomes a G chord in the minstrel tuning, and the G chord form becomes a D chord in the minstrel tuning. Both chord forms are used throughout this tune. The banjo solos are played in 2F style, and the vocal back-up is played with basic up-picking. A YouTube video of me playing this tunes is at: https://youtu.be/Axy8l_oa7YE

Notes: IMPORTANT: the tuning is actually fDADE, so I tune to fCGCD and put a capo on the second fret.
This is from Magnus Letterlund's fantastic YouTube channel teaching Nordic songs on the mandolin. This one is an old Swedish dance tune.
I enjoyed playing it on the mandolin and thought I'd make a little banjo arrangement.
It might be more suitable to play with a plectrum. I play it with a thumbpick so I can use fingers in some parts.

Notes: This song has been rattling around my forebrain for a while, and I finally got around to tabbing out a couple of breaks. There is nothing radical here, I think, just some standard stuff that is useful is a variety of breaks. The tempo can be either slow, almost plodding as in Flatt and Scruggs’s recording, or energetic and sparky, as in the versions by the Country Gents, Jim Mills, and others.

This version of Pretty Little Cat comes from West Virginia fiddler Wilson Douglas. Named for president Woodrow Wilson, Douglas was born in 1922 on a farm in rural Clay County in an area known as Rush Fork. I did not know Wilson well, but did get to encounter him a few times. He had a fierce feeling and passion for old-time music that was moving and inspiring. Wilson Died at age 76 in 1999.
Wilson recorded "Pretty Little Cat" on "Fiddle Tunes from Central West Virginia", with fine accompaniment of Kim Johnson on banjo and Mark Payne on guitar. Wilson's version has only one A and one B part. Lee Triplett, an older Clay County fiddler played a different melody that he called Pretty Little Cat.

Notes: Recently I was playing in open D tuning (f#DF#AD) because I love the resolution to the open fourth string, which resonates in my soul, such as it is. As I noodled around, a new tune emerged, and I present it in the Archive for your dining and dancing pleasure. As for the title, well, it came to me in a dream. Either that or I heard on the news.

Notes: Prisoner’s Song is a classic bluegrass and country song performed by everyone from Bill Monroe and Del McCoury to Fats Domino and Brenda Lee, and also recorded as an instrumental by the Kentucky Colonels. However you want to play it, you’ll need the banjo, and here are two straightforward breaks for you to try out. The first break ends in a D-chord run I heard Bill Emerson play, and the second break ends with a D run based on the playing of Bill Keith.

Notes: This tab has errors in it that I am not able to correct as a beginner (I'm learning TablEdit). If I move the cursor to the second string and press 0, then move to the right and press 2, then move to the first string and press 0, it shows up as 7-5-7 on the tab vice 0-2-0. The notes on the staff above are correct, and when played it sounds correct. Does anybody know what the problem is with the numbers shown on the strings? I'm sure it must be a mistake I made with some finger fumble on the keyboard, etc. See my post at: http://www.banjohangout.org/topic/289870/#3655135

Notes: This not my first tab transcription, but the first I'm posting to Banjo Hangout. This is a Bela Fleck song from the Natural Bridge album that a friend recently lent me, and so I learned one of the more Scruggsy/ straight ahead bluegrass songs from the album. I feel it has a nice and catchy sound to it. Anyway, here it is.
