Notes: Based upon Norm Edmunds version: http://slippery-hill.com/M-K/AEAE/Callahan-Edmonds.mp3. This is crooked and I don't know how to represent that in Tab - so where I hear the extra notes, I've added a note in the tab. Just play right through that and it should work out. Capo or tune to A.

Notes: In memory of Bill Keith, whose recording of Duke Ellington’s Caravan on his 1976 album “Something Auld, Something Newgrass” introduced the tune to the world of bluegrass banjo and gob-smacked me when I first heard it. The tab is based on Keith’s arrangement, and it is mostly the way I have played Caravan for the last few decades. It is not a note-for-note copy of Keith’s version, but I did include a number of his nifty ideas, or at least my interpretation of them, that are worth examining. Note that in live performance Keith would start the tune with some appropriate noodling, and I have included a fragment in the tab. Note also that the Intro includes the banjo’s alternating between G7 and Ab Dim, whereas the backing instruments alternated between G7 and Ab7 throughout Part A of the tune. Finally, in his Outro to the tune Keith used a Keith tuner on the 4th string to go from D to C. If you don’t have a Keith tuner on your 4th string, you can just end it with a C note on the 2nd string 1st fret.

Notes: My arrangement of this traditional folk song, which has been recorded by pickers as diverse as Pete Seeger and Earl Scruggs. The first and third breaks should be played slowly, in the chordal style employing triplets, and you will probably need to employ the MIDI function on TablEdit to hear what they should sound like, because they way they look in tablature does not resemble how they sound. I like to play the second break at a faster tempo, and the contrast between the slow and fast breaks makes a more interesting arrangement, I think. The tablature shows the arrangement in drop C tuning, although it could be played just as easily in standard G tuning.

Notes: Similar to the rendition on my recording for Complete Book of Irish & Celtic 5-String Banjo, and in my BHO Music Files. Note fretting-hand fingerings: index (i), middle (m), ring (r), and pinky (p) fingers. I could have used (l) for little finger, but it looks too much like the "i" for index, so I opted for "p" (pinky).

Notes: Another one by the famous Carolan, not really a folk piece but not really a classical one, neither. The style is not pure clawhammer, rather something like "clawpick" would be a better name as I use my index finger like a pick to get notes sequences clearer and so I can use my thumb on upbeats more easily. If that explanation's not the clearer, sure it is the shorter.

Notes: This is one of two songs (the other is “And the Angels Sing”) that seem to transport me to a place beyond time and space. A place where the only things that exist are the melody, the love of my life and little old dysfunctional me. “Oh, how we danced on the night we were wed...” While I started with a MusicXML file that someone else wrote tweaking the melody for playing on the banjo is not point-and-click easy. I did the best I could. Hope you enjoy it. More importantly, I hope someone finds it useful enough to take to the next level. The MP3 was generated from the TAB - my playing is terrible...

Notes: Fairly simple arrangement in the clawhammer style with hammer ons, slides and pull offs but no drop thumbing. Includes two variations on the B part. Some bluegrass versions have a shorter A part so if you want to do that version just disregard measures 9 and 10 and it will work fine. Capo 2 for fiddle in A.

Notes: The Nashville fiddler Tommy Jackson wrote Cherokee Shuffle, and it has become a staple for bluegrass banjo players. For reasons lost in the foggy mists of time, my band Silver Spring (in Vancouver, B.C., mid-1970s) changed the E minor to an E major and renamed it Cherokee Strut -- and note that the tune is typically played in the key of A; thus we are talking F# minor and F# major. My tab includes 2 breaks, the first in conventional 3-finger style and the second incorporating more melodic sequences. This was how I played more than 15 years before Bill Keith released his terrific arrangement. The structure of the tune is AABB.

Notes: For those who prefer Chicago Tuning I made this chart for chord shapes up the neck to the 12th fret for your basic jazz era repertoire. It includes as many 4 note chord voicing as I thought worked but I am no expert. I skipped most open chords to keep it simpler learning the movable shapes which you can transpose easy. It is organized by chord function so you can work with some substitutions as might fit chord solos or just regular accompaniment.

I bought the tabs for Chicken Reel, but the tabs don't show how Dave plays his fancy chorus piece (for lack of better words to describe it). I figured the piece out and here it is. By the way, I made a nice backing track for this song, which you'll find in the MP3 section of this forum in a few different speeds. Enjoy!

Back in 2009 I uploaded a tab for the 2 part tune in D and this is the other one, a wonderfully unsquare three parter in A. It is actually only the 1st part that is unsquare, although none of it sounds very straight on first hearing. Capo II for the correct pitch. I used the "John Brown's Dream" tuning which is the same as standard A (standard G, capo 2) but with the 4th string pitched down to a low A, a full octave below the 3rd string. This tuning creates a low, rumbly drone. A video demo is posted on my YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/NLTxvUi-ju8

Notes: Here's a fiddle tune for the banjo, Cincinnati Rag. There's a little bit of cross-picking (crossing one right-hand finger over another) to accommodate the melody. The descending part over the "A" chord in the first section is also kinda hard. This version goes to an E-minor chord one time in the second part. This is the way Kenny Baker (among a few others) played it. I label this "Scruggs" style, but there is also melodic & single string in there.

Notes: This is a great tune that I am surprised more people don't play. My arrangement is based on Bobby Hicks's outstanding fiddle break on Herschel Sizemore's recording "Back in Business." You should play this thing at a good pace; the tab is at a tempo of 240. Pay attention to the A chord in the first break, measures 12 and 13, which I based on Lee Marcus's tab that is no longer available on BHO. I based the A to D passages in the second break, measures 36-38 and 44-47, on a break of Sonny Osborne's that I heard many years ago -- "I Know What It Means to Be Lonesome" perhaps.

Notes: Here is the tab of my attempt to approximate on the banjo the way Kenny Baker plays Cincinnati Rag on the fiddle. Hence there are more melodic sequences and fewer Scruggs cliches (licks, runs) than in the version of CR I posted previously. The tab is not note-for-note, both because the staccato of the picked banjo cannot capture the sustain of the bowed fiddle, and because I am not Noam Pikelny.

Notes: This tab describes the banjo introduction to "Cindy" from a clip from Pete Seeger's "Rainbow Quest" program (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vhTWMOebv8 ). Pete fingerpicks the intro and then plays clawhammer backup behind the singing with Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry. The folk picking pattern is: 1 2-and 3-and 4. Each measures start with a pinch (thumb and finger). Then thumb generally alternates between the 5th string and the 3rd string on the beat like the thumb bass on guitar. The 2nd and 3rd beats are made up of the thumb followed by a finger pick as eighth notes. The 4th beat is usually a single note played by the thumb.

Notes: I wrote this because our church building didn't have a bell tower. I heard similar chimes off an old Pete Stanley number. It is played in a lot of chords so should be easy for a begginer to play after a bit. I usually play it faster than it is tabbed here.

Notes: A really easy way to break into "Sawmill" tuning (2d string raised to C) and have a nice tune to play. Nothing fancy here, just an accessible, good-sounding song. The key is actually G Dorian, so there is one flat (Bb) in the key signature rather than the more conventional one sharp (F#).

Notes: As I hear it, CMB is really a clawhammer tune that Ralph Stanley played 3-finger style, for whatever reason. Incidentally, a very nice version of CMB was recorded by the Kentucky Colonels on their classic album "Appalachian Swing," featuring sublime rhythm and lead guitar by the one-and-only Clarence White.

Notes: This is wonderful version of Clinch Mountain Backstep from the playing of John Apfelthaler. Visit John's BHO page to the video of him playing it. It starts with a down the neck arrangement, followed by melodic and up the neck arrangements, and closes out with two more down the neck arrangements. It is packed from one end to the other with interesting licks and ideas, but remains true to the original tune.
I think this tab is very close to a fret for fret transcription. But be aware of one point. The fourth bar of the B section of Clinch Mountain backstep changes time signature to 6/4. When tabbing I couldn't get that to work with John's melodic arrangement. I contacted John who was kind enough to tell me that in his enthusiasm he had played through that part in 4/4. He was also kind enough to advise me how to correct the small error. So the tab won't quite match John's playing at that point in the tune. So follow the tab - particularly if you're playing it with other musicians.

Notes: This tab for the jig, "Coleraine," involves use of drop thumb and left-hand licks to accommodate 6/8 time. The suggested right-hand approach is to use a downstroke on beats 1-and-3 and 4-and-5 The middle beats may be played by the left hand with hammer-ons and pull-offs or left silent.

Notes: I have this exact tab recorded note-for-note in the BHO music files, played to a piano backing track so that I could put in bass movement and chords in order for the syncopated figures to be heard against the normal downbeats and strong beats. I also play this with a considerable amount of swing (bounce) which gives the tune an even more syncopated feeling. This is a cakewalk, similar to ragtime, though it could be sped up and played as a driving breakdown. Playing tip: as tempo increases, the more the bounce (degree of swing) tends to even out. The focus here is to demonstrate syncopation and accenting in Scruggs-style picking. Big thanks to Taj Mahal for this lovely tune.

Notes: This is my interpretation of Taj Mahal’s well known version of Colored Aristocracy. He puts a lot of skipped note syncopation into it. I’ve captured some, but not all of that syncopation. However, I think this should give you the basics of how he played this tune. A video of me playing this rendition is posted on my YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/7Le5VF0yNfA

Notes: Fun tune, common at sessions. There are some tricky techniques needed to play this melodic clawhammer style. In particular, I am using a lot of m-marppegios, the ones in the B-part are totally fun to play, but the ones in the A-part are trickier, because you have to prepare to drop-thumb too. As I said, the tune is lots of fun, so enjoy!

The right hand fingering is a bit tricky in the B part as it chops and changes about a lot, but I have included the right hand fingering in all the places where one might come unstuck. Notes: This clawhammer version is more or less based on Chet Atkin's version (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SIf7RW3f48 ). I have tried to transfer Chet's version to clawhammer banjo, even if it is big differences between Chet's alternate bass guitar and cllawhammer banjo.
The second part (B Part) is played with three-finger forward rolls instead of the clawhammer rhyrhm.. You can play the A part instead if you don't master the forward roll.
The tuning is aCGBD which is good for tunes in Am: Copper Kettle starts in the key of C, but modulates to Am in the middle of the tune. (I have avoided the fourth string so also aDGBD would work, but be careful to not play the fourth string open.

Notes: My source was "The Old-Time Fiddler's Repertory - 245 Traditional Tunes", Compiled and edited by R.P. Christeson. This arrangement is fairly true to the fiddler's transcription, except in the 2nd and 6th full measures of the B-part where I added some notes and chords to make the quarter and half notes sound more interesting. I also changed the time signature from 2/4 to cut-time. Fun, fairly easy piece to play. Note that this is the fiddle tune and not the song from "O Brother Where Art Thou?" Cheers!

Notes: Dock Boggs' "Country Blues", from his original 1927 recording (he also recorded a similar version for Folkways in the 1960's). One of the finest old-time banjo & singing records ever. This is his second break to the tune (slightly more audible than the first break, which is probably the same). Tuning is D-Modal low bass, f#CGAD. A fairly quick old time number. Not too hard, and not too easy, either.

Notes: "Country Blues," based on the playing of Dock Boggs. This is the main bit I use to accompany my singing. I have several variations (some subtle, some not so subtle) I play for instrumental breaks, which I hope to commit to tablature. Feel free to play with the timing--add an extra beat or so here and there. Or cut some short. Have fun with it. Play it fast or slow--it all sounds great!
Measures 5, 11, and 14 contain a figure that consists of a hammer on and plucked note sounding simultaneously. You may omit either one. They are the same note, so it will sound fine. Measures 9 and 18 also contain a simultaneous hammer on and plucked note. You may omit the plucked note. Additionally, I often slide into the notes at the 5th fret, 4th string, such as those in measures 5, 11, 13, and 17 (sometimes more, sometimes less).
The style is Dock Boggs' 3-finger up picking. The index finger plays the 2nd string, the middle finger plays the 1st string, and the thumb plays the 3rd, 4th, and 5th strings. The melody is spread across the main strings, and the drone is used more sparingly. The tuning is f#CGAD.

Notes: Crazy Arms is a wonderful classic country song. Ray Price's version in particular comes to mind. My band Knee Deep plays it in the key of F, to accommodate the singers' voices. Although F is somewhat unconventional in bluegrass banjo, it nonetheless can be very effective, as seen in the playing of Allen Shelton, J. D. Crowe, and others. My break is structured in the chordal style of repetitive triplets, and the tablature is more comprehensible if you listen to it in the MIDI function of TablEdit. Note that the C chord contains a short passage of an ascending thirteenth chord, a nifty creation of Sonny Osborne’s that mimics a pedal steel.

Notes: Here is the Don Reno banjo tune "Crazy Finger Blues". I believe Don "invented" the unique tuning used for the song, g#EG#BC#, or open D ("Reuben") tuning up a whole step with the 1st string lowered. It's a fun, pretty simple & fairly easy banjo tune that is impressive. The "Crazy Finger" part is almost slap-your-self-in-the-forehead easy. But it sounds hard. I've also included most of the other variations Don does in the tune. Be sure to check out the original recording by Reno & Smiley; it's great! For the part where the banjo & the fiddle split the break, just barre @ the 12th for the E chord, 5th for the A chord, & 7th for the B chord, & it's thumb —index/middle on the 3rd and 2nd/1st strings, played to the rhythm of the song. An excellent "Jam" tune. Has a Rhythm Guitar & Bass rhythm track. Have fun!

Notes: Fairly simple arrangement in the clawhammer style with slides, hammer ons, pull offs and easy drop thumbing. The first pass is the basic version everyone does. It is almost note for note like Jim Pankey's version on his Youtube channel. Go look it up if you want to see a great lesson on it. The second pass is kind of a Banjo in the Hollow melodic drop thumb A Part with complimentary variations on the B Part.

Notes: I have tried to accurately transcribe the playing of Alan O'Bryant on the Nashville Bluegrass Band's recording of this song [on their album "Twenty Year Blues"] although there are a couple of places where I remain unsure of exactly what he played [bars 28 & 29 being one!]. Most of it is bona fide though, I would say, with a melodic A part and single string B part. A great medium paced tune with lovely cascading melodies. Enjoy!

Notes: This gem was written by Bill Monroe, who reportedly told Lamar Grier, his banjo player in the mid-1960s, "This will be a good tune for you." Grier apparently did not like CtC, because it is played at a loping pace slower than most banjo instrumentals and does not employ any of the standard banjo rolls or licks. I think it can be a fine tune for the banjo, and my tablature was influenced by
Butch Robins's outstanding arrangement, particularly the DTN break.

Notes: My arrangement features a judicious mixing of forward rolls and backward rolls. Pay particular attention to this in the second break, the last section of which (the slide up the fifth fret of the first string) is pretty similar to a break of Earl Scruggs's on a concert recording of Flatt and Scruggs. The tag after that section is my own. It is worthwhile to incorporate backward rolls -- typically M-I-T with a first-string lead -- into your playing, because they add extra tension and interest, in my opinion.

There are two tabs here, the first is from his Folkways recordings, and the second is from "Dock Boggs Recordings From Reed Martin", on Field Recorders Collective. The first is a spry, very well played version with lots of energy and is Dock's unique three-finger style at it's best. The second is much slower, and can almost be played with two fingers, and is much easier. Tuning is "Cumberland Gap" D-tuning, f#BEAD.
