Notes: I have read that Obray plays a two figure style, but "Down Beside The Ohio" sounds closer to the recording when you use three finger rolls. I also love the way Obray just vamps on the verses allowing plenty of room for the vocal performance to shine through, and also allowing for the theme to used repetitively through out the song as solo breaks. I have just tabbed the intro, partly cos I only have a demo version of tab edit, and partly cos the instrumental breaks are just variations of this and he simply vamps the verses, using open G, D7 and C chords.

Notes: This tune has found its way into Irish traditional music circles, and I play it regularly with James Wickham (button accordion) at the Cryan's session in Carrick on Bannow, Co. Leitrim. James and I have moved it up to Em in a tune medley, followed by 'Ships are Sailing' and then a tune in D, depending, sometimes 'St. Anne's Reel' or 'The Maid Behind the Bar'. It always goes over well with the punters.

Notes: Chrille's Hot & Jazzy Melodies For The Tenor Banjo Vol. I is my first tenor banjo song book, in which I have arranged my favourite tenor banjo tunes. It is a sheet music book from a banjoist for other banjoists. These are the songs: Banjomania (Pete Madell), Bye Bye Blues (Traditional Jazz & Banjo Classic), I'll Get By (Turk & Ahlert), Marie (Irving Berlin), Pals, Just Pals (Dreyer & Ruby) & Take Your Pick (Pete Mandell). Here you have the chance to look inside the book and try to play an example page of "Take Your Pick".
As always you have a CD with jazzy piano accompaniments for every song in three different speed levels. The perfect rhythm partner to play a long.

Notes: The Irish reel credited to Davey Arthur. This is a bare-bones setting for the tune with minimal ornamentation. The picking-hand fingerings have a purpose: maximum speed, so try to incorporate them and don't revert to TITI TITI patterns if you hope to play this at the fastest session tempos. I also put in fretting-hand fingerings as a courtesy. };^D>

Notes: This is an advanced setting for the popular Irish reel in D Minor, and as a courtesy, I have included fretting- and picking-hand fingerings. It's Celtic fingerstyle at its most elaborate, loosely based on Brian Conway's fiddle playing, a tune credited to Davey Arthur. This setting can be transposed further up the neck because it uses no open strings, so try E Minor, F Minor, G Minor, A Minor and B Minor; okay, C Minor is as high as it goes! };^D>

Notes: Gypsy Jazz purist might be appalled, but this is a 5-string banjo version of the song “Tears” (also called “Muri Wachsella an u Sennelo Weesch”) by Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli. This is an old European folk song, but I can’t find much about its history. The arrangement is in Am with Am tuning (a E A C E). Django played it in Cm (which I think is the most mournful key); Chet Atkins and Mark Knopfler, and many others, play it in Am. The bridge changes to the major key.
I did not indicate a playing style because I prefer to play it with some upstrokes, but it can be played entirely with clawhammer strokes.

Notes: Here is a popular Irish tune that enjoys remarkable popularity among Bluegrass & Old-time musicians as well, Temperance (Teetotaller's) Reel. Although a good portion of the tune is in E minor, both parts end on a G chord, thus follows that it is in G major. Not quite a straight-forward piece, as I strove to include some of the little fiddle "rolls" in the tune, consisting of very quick hammer-on & pull-offs, as well as some hammer-ons & pull-offs where the melody goes below the low G string. Melodic style, with a couple instances of single-string. Has a Rhythm Guitar & Bass rhythm track. Have fun!

Notes: As best I can recall, I first heard this lovely traditional tune on Tony Rice’s initial solo album on Rounder Records (entitled “Tony Rice,” appropriately enough). There was no banjo break on the track – J. D., where were you? – and so I worked out a break that followed Rice’s chord structure (other versions may employ slightly different chords). I have posted the tab here.

Notes: A mishmash of styles here. I used Michael Corcoran's tab as a template (with his permission) as it was very similar to how I play it. The first 2 breaks are a combination of my and Michael's ideas. For the 3rd break, I asked Hans Holzherr to throw one out there, and he obliged. The last break is ideas borrowed from Scott Vestal's playing. As always, use the tab as a gateway to your own way of playing it. Have fun!

Notes: A great Aubrey Haynie fiddle tune which is gaining a lot of popularity at the sessions in Devon. This is a near transcription [without the pyrotechnics at the end of the 2nd time round the A part] of Bela Fleck's banjo break on Haynie's original recording on the album "A Man Must Carry On". Note the subtle change of chords (and thus the melody) in the second time round the A part and that the B part only goes round once. It's in regular tuning with capo II. I hope you like it!

When an old friend I happened to see
I introduced her to my loved one

I remember the night and the Tennessee Waltz
Now I know just how much I have lost
Yes, I lost my little darling the night they were playing

The tab is based on this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCOX8dT9q8M. It also uses the chords and structure posted in this guitar tab - https://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/tab/5144119.
The tuning is double-C, and the key is D. Capo at the 2nd fret to play along with the video or tune up to aDADE. The chords indicated are for the key of D. If played in double-C without a capo, the chords are a full step lower: C, F, Am.

Notes: Here is the complete tab for The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba (89 bars).
I’ve transcribed it from the orchestral version so I may have got it a bit wrong here and there but it sounds fine to me.
It is played in Bb so you have to capo three frets so you can play with the orchestra (which I recommend). This is the simple version in as much as the original has a few low D and Eb notes so I’ve fluffed around this the best I can otherwise you would have to remove the capo which makes it harder to play.
Believe it or not, it is not that difficult to play, just long. You don’t have to be Chris Moreton to play it (but check his brilliant guitar version out anyway). Please have a look at my previous Sheba_1 tab which is just the first 16 bars.

http://adp.library.ucsb.edu/index.php/matrix/detail/200004556/B-3049-The_Buffalo_rag
It's written in classic banjo style an uses gCGBD tuning. It's also in standard notation as I don't use tab but I have added fret numbers in parts to make it easier to work out.
I'll upload an mp3 or midi of this arrangement, I've used the piano voice as the electron banjo voice sounds pretty awful.

Notes: Here is my banjo version of the well known Mel Torme'/Bob Wells Christmas tune. I have now added the chords to the tablature, but you may prefer to substitute some of them. I rated it at expert because of a couple of tricky changes, but most of it is probably intermediate. Hope you like it.
Genre: Jazz Style: Bluegrass (Scruggs) Key: G#/Ab Tuning: Drop C (gCGBD) Difficulty: Expert
Posted by 5-String, updated: 12/5/2017
Download: TABLEDIT
Notes: This is my arrangement of my favorite Christmas tune, "The Christmas Song" by Mel Torme. The key is A flat (Ab hereafter), but it's not as bad as one might think. I discovered that if you drop the low D string down to a C, it sort of opens up the fretboard to the key of Ab. The low C note is the 3rd of Ab, and can be used as a drone. There are 2 G strings, which are the major 7th of Ab, and easily add a jazzy voicing to the Ab chord making it "Ab maj7". Also, the high G is a scale tone, so "melodic/Keith" style lines can still easily be played. The trickier part is in the 2nd section, where you have to play the melody and the bass line at the same time. The arrangement is meant to be played in a sort of ad lib style. This kind of timing was difficult to reproduce in TablEdit. It is reasonably close, but you can watch my video here on the Hangout to maybe get a little more realistic sense of the intended feel.

Notes: This is a traditional Irish melody from the 1800s arranged for clawhammer style on five string banjo. The now-famous lyrics were written around 1919 by Canon Charles O’Neill and deal with the Easter Rising of 1916.
Those that are familiar with their Americana music should be aware of the heavy influence of Celtic music on traditional Appalachian music and this tune lends itself very naturally to clawhammer playing and in fact it sounds very similar to traditional mountain tunes. The tune is traditionally played slowly as it is a solemn and mournful piece, particularly with O'Neill's lyrics, but I think it sounds better at a higher tempo when played clawhammer style.

Notes: This arrangement of The Fox is in the key of E, with the banjo in the standard C tuning (gCGBD) capoed four. The tab includes both the banjo solo and the back-up chording for singing the verses, as in my YouTube video of this arrangement (https://youtu.be/t8DfB1mH240). I up-pick this arrangement, with some drop thumb/index-lead two finger thrown in, but one could also play this i clawhammer style.

Notes: I have uploaded a simple tab for the Christmas Song “The Friendly Beasts.” It is a good beginner song in 3:4 time. The pdf has two versions for beginners: the first 16 bars are in the first position with familiar chords. The next 16 bars are played up the neck, which might help beginners familiarize themselves with the notes and some simple chords at a higher octave.

Notes: This is a nice straightforward song that, to my knowledge, the Foggy Mountain Boys never recorded in the studio. However, there are several versions from other sources floating around, and I have tabbed two of Earl Scruggs’s breaks. The first is from a radio recording, WSM air checks, apparently from the middle or late 1950s. Earl’s break shows how he would depart from formulaic use of the standard rolls we associate with Scruggs style. The second break is from one of the Flatt and Scruggs tv shows on WSM, from July 1961. It can be found on #5 of the DVDs released by Shanachie, but you can also find it on youtube. This break also shows Earl’s propensity for improvisation in those days.

Notes: I would call the playing style melodic clawhammer. I didn't show the high drone. In Irish fiddle music there aren't a lot of places to add that, but in this piece just about every quarter note sounds good with an added high drone for variation. This one is fairly simple, beginner's should try to tackle it too. I will add a video sometime soon, but was anxious to share my tab with the world first. Enjoy!

Notes: In addition to being one of the all-time great bluegrass banjo players, Bill Emerson is a prolific composer. The Grey Ghost is one of his better known pieces, a nifty variation of the tune Dixie. TGG also employs a clever double-thumb technique, which as far as I know Emerson originated, to produce a delightful and rhythmic melodic sequence. You will first see it in measure 3, and it is worth studying. The tab is my version of TGG, inspired by but by no means note-for-note faithful to Emerson’s various versions -- he has recorded it at least 3 times that I know of. Note that the chord structure of the B Part in the second break changes a bit, which reflects the version of TGG on the 2011 album "Eclipse" by Bill Emerson.
Added on 4 May 2017: I have updated the tab for Bill Emerson’s The Grey Ghost. The change is the addition of an up-the-neck break to the A part of the second break. This tune is admirably suited to playing up the neck. The left-hand fretting can be a tad tricky, and I recommend using your index finger to barre the 1st and 2nd string at the 12th fret and holding it there until the transition to the C chord, in measure 38. To fret the 5th string at the 14th fret, I use my ring finger.

Latterly it has been covered by The Infamous Stringdusters. Enjoy...

Notes: As played by Bobby Thompson in Bill Monroe's recording, capoed up to A. One could quibble, I suppose, with my interpretation of the B part beginning in measure 18, where I show the notes as played on a single string (third string second fret to third string open) as opposed to melodic style (fourth string seventh fret to third string open) to achieve the same sequence of notes. I don't know for sure which way Bobby Thompson played it, but I find the single-string approach to be easier to play.

** Additional note [Xmas 2020] **
I wrote the original tab for this in 2006 when I hadn't been playing long. It consequently had a few fingering errors, so I have just updated it, making it easier to finger, hopefully without losing any of the essence of the tune. I have made a short video of it, which you can view on this site or via YouTube here:

Notes: This is my first full-length tab, so I'm sure it's in no way perfect. I used the youtube video
where The Earls of Leicester are playing an a darkend room with a single lightbulb. Charlie
has a couple variations in the video of them under a tree, notabily in m.9-11 and the ending.
All the x's are open and very subtle. Charlie is an expert at bring out the melody notes and
backing off the filler notes. There are others, but I just chose to include those marked.
Feel free to message me with corrections!

Notes: Here's an old pop/jazz standard from the 40's (me thinks?), "The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise" arranged for — wait for it... — Twin Banjos! There are two breaks, on both breaks Banjo #1 plays the melody, and Banjo #2 does harmony. But on the first, the harmony part is a low harmony — Baritone banjo, if you will — and on the second, there's a high harmony, or "tenor" banjo (not the 4 string kind with 17 or 19 frets!). I would say that the melody part can be played admirably as a single banjo piece. If doing "The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise" as a duet, make sure you follow the tab *exactly* for the best possible sound. If you improvise a little, the banjos can clash. Hopefully this will also inspire more banjo duets with harmony. If you're feeling really bold, try getting your buddies to do lead, baritone, AND tenor — TRIPLE banjos! It does work, and sounds cool, although the melody gets buried in the harmony. The second Tabledit file has the Triple banjo parts. Has a Rhythm Guitar & Bass rhythm track. Have fun!

Notes: The Wreck of the Old 97 in drop C tuning. There may be a few minor errors in the tab, this is an older tab of mine which I made before I'd fully gotten the hang of tabbing tunes. Still, a good version with an ending I learned from an anonymous banjo player that works well in the key of C, standard tuning as well as this drop-C version. The first repeat is the melody. The second is basically an alternate melody and banjo licks with very little semblance to the real melody.

Notes: This tab for "Their Pie" is a response to a request for the tune, which comes from the soundtrack for the movie, "Nebraska." The original key is D#, and this tab is in the key of D. Capo fret above D to match the video. There a fair amount of syncopation shown by an 1/8-note rest followed by a thumb stroke. If syncopation is difficult, just play a downstroke instead of the 1/8-note rest. Video link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcaCsbwF9uc

Notes: Don Stover was one of the first generation bluegrass banjo players. His style was hard-driving but could also be jaunty and whimsical. As well, he was an excellent singer and song writer. Things in Life is one of his memorable original songs. Its structure is simple, involving only 2 chords, and its melody and lyrics are haunting. The tablature is of my version of the song in 3-finger style, although Stover played it in clawhammer. There is nothing extreme in my version – the song demands a straightforward approach.

Notes: Don Stover was one of the first generation bluegrass banjo players, but he started out as and remained an accomplished clawhammer player. He told of first hearing Earl Scruggs on the Opry in December 1945 and resolved to figure out how he played that way. Stover’s 2-finger style did not sound like Scruggs, however, but the light dawned when a traveling salesman told him Earl played 3-finger style using metal finger picks. He was also an excellent singer and song writer, and Things in Life is one of his memorable original songs. Its structure is simple, involving only 2 chords, and its melody and lyrics are haunting. Stover played clawhammer banjo on the song. The tablature is my clawhammer version of the song, inspired by but not a note-for-note copy of Stover’s playing. It is in open C tuning.

Notes: This is my melodic arrangement of a lovely tune by Russ Barenberg, which has recently been the theme tune for "The Transatlantic Sessions". It's a transcription of Russ Barenberg's initial guitar break, but due to the limited range of the banjo, it has to be played an octave higher. It's a trifle tricky in places and I have put the right hand fingering in the places where I feel one might struggle. This arrangement uses all of the neck, reaching the 19th fret in the B part. Very satisfying when it starts to flow! This tune is gaining a lot of popularity in the West Country (Devon & Cornwall) so let's get it out to the world to widen its appeal! Have fun!
PS, it's in D and don't forget to spike the 5th to A!

Notes: YouTube video at https://youtu.be/M-Gduj8dRg0 ... This is my simple arrangement for 5-String Banjo of this haunting song by Jim Croce. I finally got around to tabbing this out after repeated requests over the years. Note that I take quite a few liberties with the tune, including adding a bridge (invoked again as the ending) as well as a more straightforward chord structure than some of the convoluted stuff I see on the internet. And its most basic, I'm simply naming the passing chords which underlay the tune, and not attempting to slap a name on everything that's going on as some transcribers seem to do. The chordal riffs in this tune should be thought of as melody throughlines rather than named chords. The first pass through the tune I basically follows the tab as included. My 2nd time through I play it differently which is not tabbed out.
The 2nd half of the video shows a very simple melody line to consider. Of course, everything presented here are just ideas to get you started. I am sure you banjo folks can come up with some cool stuff to lay on top and I hope this inspires you to explore this very cool tune.

Notes: This tab is based on Sharon Martinson's video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=338vvwkCbc0&list=RD338vvwkCbc0&index=2.
The key is C, but she uses sawmill tuning (gDGCD) for the tune, as she mentions in the introduction. Sharon uses quite a few downstrokes where the finger strikes first one string then the next. I have used mostly open-string pull-offs (ASPO) for these situations. She also uses syncopation often with a "ghost" downstroke followed by the thumb striking a string on the second half of the beat. I tried to capture some, but not all, of these. This tab represents what I hear in the tune and how I might choose to play it.
The chords in the tab are for any guitar accompaniment. The banjo plays partial chords or no chords, in some situations.

Notes: Earl Scruggs recorded Toy Heart with Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys in 1947. His break is straightforward and driving, particularly the nifty F7 chord up the neck. Almost 30 years later, J. D. Crowe recorded it with the Bluegrass Album Band, and in his break you can hear the subtle bluesy touches he added to the style. You may find it informative to compare the tabs of the 2 breaks. To add a humorous note, I have included the tab of my break to Toy Heart. Don’t pop your stitches from laughing too hard.

Notes: "Trip To Rossaveel" is a jig I composed after my first trip to Ireland. I worked it out by flat-picking it on the guitar. Fitting it to the banjo didn't come very naturally at first, but it seems to sound much better after I tried double-c tuning, capoed at the 2nd fret. Very heavy jig rhythm, so MTM MTM or pull-offs and hammer-ons for the weak beats as is standard for clawhammered jigs on the banjo. I only marked the one place where there is an exception to that. Measures 9 and 10 require way up the fret-board playing to accommodate the mechanics of clawhammer. You finger-style players could probably come-up with a more natural way to play those measures. Hope you enjoy it, cheers!

This is a lovely little traditional Swedish tune, I first heard it played on nyckelharpa by Emelie Waldken on YouTube.

Notes: This is basically Dock Boggs' version of Turkey in the Straw as played in his recordings he made in the 60s. If you play this to start you off, and then listen to the record to finish up the last little flourishes, you'll be on your way. I haven't put the fingering in, but I use all 3 fingers, mainly leading with the thumb and first finger. if you're stuck mail me on jerometurner77 at gmail.com

Notes: Here's a little variation on the up-the-neck version of this song. I rearranged it to allow for some really quick pickin'.
With only a little practice this song can be blazing fast.

Notes: This is mostly a non-melodic approach to Turkey in the straw. Although many banjoists already play it melodically, this just gives you a different slant to the tune. Hope you like it...Lynn W

Notes: Turkey in the Straw is a traditional tune going back to minstrel days, when it had a racist title. It was one of the first tunes I worked out in melodic style, in 1963 or 1964. Hearing a tape of Bill Keith playing it helped me at that time to finalize my version, which owes a lot to him I am sure. It is a good tune from which to begin learning melodic style.

Notes: Melodic clawhammer version of this old song. Tabbed for OzarkBanjoMan who remembered the tune his grandfather played. He also has a great old photo of his grandfather playing into a recording device with a megaphone-type speaker. This tab is loosely based on a YouTube video by the Empty Bottle String Band. I have also uploaded tab for banjo backup with lyrics.

Notes: This is a nice old-time tune in A modal that I picked up from listening to Reed Martin's "Old Time Banjo" CD. This is a completely different tune than the tune by the same name in D major. While it is sometimes characterized as Mixolydian, it is actually a hexatonic tune, with only six, rather than seven notes in the scale. It is missing the third degree of the scale, the note which- depending on whether it were a major or minor third- would allow it to be properly characterized as either Dorian or Mixolydian. Old time tunes are often modally ambiguous for lots of reasons, one of which, like here, is that there are not enough notes to tell. This tune is probably related to the old ballad about jealousy and murder which sometimes has the same name. The banjo is tuned gDGAD, capoed on 2.

Notes: This is my first attempt, just for fun, to arrange a whole bluegrass song, including the lead melody and tenor harmony. Unfortunately, TablEdit doesn't have a voice synthesiser, so I have used midi sounds to replace the voice. I entered the melody notes for the voice and tenor harmony as banjo tab. The instruments are guitar, banjo and bass.
I have loosely based the arrangement on the Country Gentlemen's version, although I don't know how to inject their level of drive and energy. Also I haven't included mandolin and dobro or attempted to copy Eddie Adcock's inspired backup! (Someone else is welcome to have a go at that.) Instead I opted for some vamping the first time round and then some simple forward and forward-reverse rolls the second time.
Note that if you should ever want to print all of this out, it runs to lots of pages. So it is better to print out one instrument/voice at a time using the TablEdit Print Set Up menu on the Multi-Track tab.
I have pitched the song in G, although the CGs do it in B (I think). However, with TablEdit, it is easy to transpose into higher keys if required.
