Notes: I presume Roger Sprung has used a dropped C-tuning gCGBD, in spite of the fact, that the lowered D-string ist not plucked at all. But even when not played the string rings and gives the tune the special drive.

Notes: This famous country song by Oliver Hood was first recorded in 1939. The next year Jimmie Davis, later governor of Louisiana, waxed it, and was followed by Bing Crosby and Gene Autry, who made it famous. I arranged and performed this version for the wedding of novelist T Cooper, who requested the song for the processional. The usual key for the tune is C. - Glenn Weiser www.celticguitarmusic.com

Notes: Everybody knows this song, which has a nice simple melody that is accessible to neophyte banjo pickers. I have tabbed 2 breaks, the second of which contains some note twisting with Keith/Scruggs tuners. You will need to play the MIDI to hear what this sounds like. For your dining and dancing pleasure, I also added a segment of backup, just to show how it can be done.

Notes: Earl Scruggs and Cousin Jake played this ragtime classic as a duet between the banjo and bass fiddle. The first break is similar to the way Earl recorded it, in the Carnegie Hall concert; the second is not.

Notes: This is a transcription of the Flatt & Scruggs recording of the song as heard on "At Carnegie Hall". I transcribed this because it was the slowest banjo playing I ever heard from Earl Scruggs and I wanted to practice some ear skills. The banjo intro and the two breaks are almost identical, so it really just is eight or nine measures worth of music.
I guess I need to find a better way to typeset the bend in the sixth measure. The E note on the 4th string doesn't go up all the way to the F note, it really just is some quarter note bend. In some places I guess I haven't really got the rhythm right, especially the lick in measure 3 of the banjo break. Make sure to listen to the original a lot and play it as you hear it. Generally the whole piece has a very strong bounce to it, i.e. the first one of a pair of eighth notes is always longer than the second one.

Notes: Del McCoury recorded Wildwood on his first solo album,, “Del McCoury Sings Bluegrass,” in 1967. The banjo player was the great Bill Emerson, who played the chorus in his break. The break is pretty straightforward, and ends with a fine D lick that can be used in a variety of tunes. You might enjoy comparing Emerson's break on the chorus to Scruggs's breaks on the verse, also posted on BHO.

Notes: Flatt and Scruggs did not do a studio recording of Wildwood, but they did perform it on one of the radio tapes I have. It is a wonderful song, and I’m surprised more bluegrass musicians have not recorded it – the only album I have it on is Del McCoury’s first solo album from 1967, “Del McCoury Sings Bluegrass,” on Smithsonian Folkways. Earl Scruggs played the verse in his breaks, and I have tabbed the two versions I heard him play.
