Notes: The oldest Irish versions of this tune are in G Dorian (two parts), with even older Scottish versions under different names. Many two-part versions are in G Mixolydian and are very close to 'Paddy on the Turnpike'. This version is fairly contemporary, similar to Eileen Ivers', John Carty's and Matt Cranitch's fiddle versions, all of which have three parts. This version has a little more "D-ness" to it thanks to Eileen's version. (I would not call this 'Paddy on the Turnpike', which only has two parts. I have other three-part Celtic fingerstyle versions of this tune with more "F-ness" to them.)

Notes: This is one of my favorite traditional Irish tunes to play on the Irish tenor banjo and mandolin. I decided to create a simple melodic style arrangement of the song for five string players. The tune is played in both 6/8 and 4/4 (a particularly good version by The High Kings even switches between the two) so I included both a 6/8 and a 4/4 version. Note that both versions use the exact same notes. Only the note duration varies between the two.

Notes: This is a traditional Irish melody from the 1800s arranged for clawhammer style on five string banjo. The now-famous lyrics were written around 1919 by Canon Charles O’Neill and deal with the Easter Rising of 1916. Those that are familiar with their Americana music should be aware of the heavy influence of Celtic music on traditional Appalachian music and this tune lends itself very naturally to clawhammer playing and in fact it sounds very similar to traditional mountain tunes. The tune is traditionally played slowly as it is a solemn and mournful piece, particularly with O'Neill's lyrics, but I think it sounds better at a higher tempo when played clawhammer style.

Notes: The origins of this song are unknown, but it has been embraced by the folk music community (e.g., Dave Guard and the Whiskeyhill Singers) as well as by bluegrassers (e.g., Bill Monroe and Doc Watson, Tony Rice). I have tabbed 2 pretty straightforward breaks, one down the neck and one up the neck. Note that it is a great tune to play with Keith tuners, and I leave it to you to work out the arrangement

Notes: Thanks to Larry Campbell (OT fiddle) and Joel Hooks (classic banjo) for this hybrid arrangement (AABBACCDD). Here are all the parts, though it's still possible to play the tune like an Irish polka (AABB), or using different combinations of the original four piano parts as composed by Kerry Mills (1899). Some tunes stand the test of time.

Notes: This is a note for note transcription of how Bill Keith played this tune on the "Bill Keith and Jim Collier" album. Note that this version is slightly different than the version included in my "Medley" with the Square Dance Tune, being longer with more parts repeated (Form: A A B B A B). The tab is written such that you can follow along with the recording. Adjust settings so that chords are displayed as letter names only, tab is displayed at 4 bars per line, and view is scaled to 16th notes. Bill Keith's left hand fingerings are included, but may be considered unusual or difficult by some. Other fingerings are possible and might be preferable by players with different sized hands and/or banjo necks.

Notes: This is a note for note transcription of how Bill Keith played this tune at the Midwest Banjo Camp, 2013. YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlHoWnLzIAY Note that this version is slightly different than the version included in my "Medley" with the Bourree by Bach. A few lines have simple, but useful alterations, to grab the ear of someone paying attention. The tab is written such that you can follow along with the recording. Chords are very basic. Bill remarks "I can remember the title sometimes," but never states it in the linked video given above.

YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpqAFnyvzHQ The tab is written such that you can follow along with the recording. Chords are basic, i.e. not necessarily exactly what is being played by the guitar. Bill Keith's left hand fingerings are included, but may be considered unusual or difficult by some. Breaking Up Christmas

Notes: This tab and midi file is a triple rendering of Breaking Up Christmas meant to compare and contrast "Round Peak" clawhammer banjo with other ways of playing the tune. This first rendition is melodic, almost note for note as Tommy Jarrell fiddled. The second rendition is "Round Peak" based on the banjo playing of Fred Cockerham and others. The third rendition is basic clawhammer (but not "Round Peak" and not "melodic") based on the playing of Hilarie Burhans. NOTE: the tab (pdf) comprises two pages. They should be laid side-by-side for viewing so that all the tabs line up properly. The tabs are arranged on the pages so that you can compare each measure in the three versions note-for-note.

Notes: This is a difficult tune in some ways, it was really not easy at all to force it into Tab. It may or may not be crooked in the traditional sense but it's crooked on the inside. I expect this tune will be very difficult to understand without hearing it played. Good luck.
