Notes: Bill Monroe and Byron Berline co-wrote the first 2 parts of GR, the parts most people are familiar with. Berline also wrote a third part, which you can hear at the tail end of Monroe's recording, and I have included all 3 in my arrangement for banjo. I originally posted this tab in 2018 and have revised it to include some ideas in the B Part that I heard Charlie Cushman play.

Notes: Very late entry to TOTW December 2025, 12th
Three finger style, first play through owes a debt to jack_beuthin's version, second variation inspired by the John Burke arrangement
Although the tab is written in C, I played in D.
The guitar chord names in brackets are the shape, so capo to 3rd for C, or to the 5th fret for D.

Notes: This is my first arrangement for a song, and I haven't even learned to play it yet, so I'm not even sure how feasible it is to achieve some of the fingerings I've set up. Any suggestions for improvement are welcome.

Notes: The tablature is of my break to this classic song from the Stanley Brothers. As does their recording, it opens with the chorus and then proceeds to the verse.

Notes: It can be helpful to compare the breaks of different banjo masters on the same song, to understand the differences in their attacks. The tab includes 3 breaks. The first is by Don Stover, who recorded it with Bill Monroe in 1957, on Monroe's first LP 'Knee Deep in Bluegrass." Note his clever D7 in the 8th measure. The second is by Bill Keith, performed with Monroe on Keith's Opry debut in 1963. The third is also by Bill Keith, recorded over 20 years later on Peter Rowan's album "The First Whippoorwill." Note how Keith's approach changed from the original track.

Notes: This tune is related to traditional tunes of various names from the 19th century, including “Coming Down from Denver [on a Trip to Galaway”).. Bill Monroe has been quoted as saying the correct name is “Coming Down from Boston.” Byron Berline did a lovely recording of it on his album “Dad’s Favorites,” featuring an outstanding banjo break by Alan Munde. The tab is my interpretation of Munde’s break, which is typically elegant yet at the same time punchy.

Notes: Here is a chord-shape alternating roll pattern, melody-focused arrangement of this beautiful, slow tempo song. The picking pattern is based off of one of Earl Scrugg's backup picking patterns that doesn't employ the fifth string. The tab can be transposed down fairly easily for other minor keys such as Em (relative minor of G major). I chose Am because that is the most common key used at my local jams. Note that in the chorus, the song modulates to the minor key's parallel major (C) but begins on the IV-I-IV-III before changing back to the minor chord progression.
