Carolan's Quarrel with the Landlady

Notes: Another one by the famous Carolan, not really a folk piece but not really a classical one, neither. The style is not pure clawhammer, rather something like "clawpick" would be a better name as I use my index finger like a pick to get notes sequences clearer and so I can use my thumb on upbeats more easily. If that explanation's not the clearer, sure it is the shorter.

Notes: This is an attempt to play Simon&Garfunkel's old hit. I started to work on this tune in the 1970's and at last I think I have come to something that can be presented for others. This arrangement is basically for a sole banjo where I have tried to pick up a little of the rhythm and of the harmonies in the song. I added a rather simple guitar accompaniment, mostly on the bass strings to give the right rhythm. The melody notes are to a large extend played by I/M pinches, where the melody note is played on the first string (middle finger) and the index plays a supporting harmony note below the melody note.

Notes: A beautiful harp tune by O’Carolan. May be a bit tricky at first sight, especially where the RH fingering is mentionned.

Genre: Bluegrass  Style: Bluegrass (Scruggs)   Key: G  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Intermediate

Notes: Eric Weissberg's version is from the seminal melodic album "New Dimensions in Banjo and Bluegrass" (1963). Butch Robins's version is from a youtube video (2019) and is similar to Weissberg's but differs in subtle and interesting ways. In my view, Robins's arrangements are typically interesting and subtle. For fun I included a banjo duet at the end of the tab.

Earl Scruggs: Home Sweet Home

Genre: Bluegrass  Style: Bluegrass (Scruggs)   Key: C  Tuning: Drop C (gCGBD)  Difficulty: Intermediate
Posted by 5-String, updated: 1/12/2020
Download: TABLEDIT

Notes: This is my interpretation of how Earl Scruggs most likely played this tune on the "Foggy Mountain Banjo" album. All lead breaks and backup are included. The tab is written such that you can follow along with the recording. Adjust settings so that chords are displayed as letter names only, tab is displayed at 4 bars per line, and view is scaled to 16th notes. The first few blank measures are there to maintain the chord & bar patterns (4 bars per phrase) such that each phrase starts at the beginning of a line.

Notes: Buck’s Run is a delightful mandolin tune composed by Buck White. To me, it conjures the sound of baying hounds chasing a deer. It is also an excellent tune for the banjo and has been recorded by several artists: Buck White of course, with banjo by Jack Hicks; Larry Cordle, with banjo by Dave Talbot from Ontari-ari-ari-o; and Jeff White, with banjo by Charlie Cushman. My version of Buck’s Run includes influences from each of these banjo pickers, as well as a wonderful fiddle break by Kenny Baker (ah, Kenny Baker …). It is played in the key of A.

1922 Blues by Charlie Parr: Clawhammer

Genre: Folk  Style: Clawhammer and Old-Time  Key: G  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Beginner
Posted by TheDuck, updated: 1/11/2020
Download: TABLEDIT | PDF

Notes: Clawhammer version of the 2ftl tab I posted. Originally by Charlie Parr. I typically do the ending bit (the last 3 measures) for another 2 measures before going in to another verse. I also sometimes substitute a regular D for the D7 near the end. Charlie plays it (on guitar) with a capo on the 2nd fret so if you want to really sound like him that might be a good call.

Notes: Clawhammer version of a 2ftl arrangement I found here: https://www.banjohangout.org/tab/browse.asp?m=detail&v=16163 The tune can be used for All You Fascists or White House Blues. Some drop thumb and pull offs but it shouldn't be hard to figure out.

Notes: This popular folk song sounds traditional, but its authorship is usually attributed to Paul Clayton. Presumably it was written in the 1950s. In bluegrass style, it has been recorded by Bill Monroe, among others. The song regularly comes up in jams.
