Notes: I heard this on an LP 'Fingers on Fire' from the Country Gentlemen, sounds like it could have been Eddie Adcock; this tab is not exactly off record, it is closer to how I played it in amongst the mp3's collection posted today 28/11/2019 ….I loved his version and I guess I don't mind mine, coz it's as near as I could get to the original.

Notes: This song has been rattling around my forebrain for a while, and I finally got around to tabbing out a couple of breaks. There is nothing radical here, I think, just some standard stuff that is useful is a variety of breaks. The tempo can be either slow, almost plodding as in Flatt and Scruggs’s recording, or energetic and sparky, as in the versions by the Country Gents, Jim Mills, and others.

Cincinnati Rag / Kenny Baker

Genre: Bluegrass  Style: Bluegrass (Scruggs)   Key: G  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Expert

Notes: Here is the tab of my attempt to approximate on the banjo the way Kenny Baker plays Cincinnati Rag on the fiddle. Hence there are more melodic sequences and fewer Scruggs cliches (licks, runs) than in the version of CR I posted previously. The tab is not note-for-note, both because the staccato of the picked banjo cannot capture the sustain of the bowed fiddle, and because I am not Noam Pikelny.

East Bound and Down (mostly melodic)

Genre: Country  Style: Bluegrass (Scruggs)   Key: G  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Intermediate
Posted by banjoy, updated: 11/7/2019

Notes: This is my original version of Jerry Reed's song "East Bound and Down." I came up with this about 30 years ago and never have actually played this in any band setting, only at occasional jam sessions where this song is pulled out of the hat. I have been asked to tab this song in the past and only got around to doing it today. Part A is almost entirely melodic. For Part B, while not melodic, I give two variations to play around with. For this version you should be able to comfortably play the 2nd string with your middle finger (inside strings) which adds to its bouncy feel. Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Notes: Tab for John Reischman’s very nice tune. Capo 2, spike 5th string at 7. Some of the 2-4 slides can be hammered-on or slid 2-3,, your preference. Youtube has a few vids of it , and this is my video https://youtu.be/B8USMVULha8

Notes: You can learn a lot from variations in breaks for a tune. Here are 2 variations on NCB. The first is my interpretation of some improvisation in Sammy Shelor's recording, and the second is a variation that I came up with.

Rock Around The Clock - Bill Hailey

Notes: This a a tab of Bill Hailey' Rock Around Clock. The song was written by Max C. Freedman och James E. Myers around 1952 and first recorded by and recorded by Bill Hailey in April 1954 on Decca. It was first recorded by Italian-American band Sonny Dae and His Knights on March 20, 1954, and Haley recorded it the first time April 12, 1954. The song is an easy 12 bar blues and it is rather easy to play back up- just follow a boogie-woogie pattern or a 12 bar blues pattern, and it is easy to improvise around the tune. This tab contains the main melody and some suggestions for variations following the main melody. It is some kind of three-finger with some easy Scruggs licks. I also included banjo versions of the guitar breaks. The tab (TablEdit and midi files) contains a simple guitar back-up. - The first verse is simply the melody. - The second verse is a up-the-neck variation of the melody where I tried to incorporate some basic threefinger rolls-. - The first solo break is based on the guitar break but transferred to banjo to make it easier. - The third verse is a more chordal version with melody and back-beat chords on the banjo. This variation sounds good even without guitar back-up. - The fourth verse is simply a repetion of the second verse, because I had no inspiration to develop it further. - The second solo break is is based on the guitar break but transferred to banjo to make it easier. It is mostly based on chords and follows a typical 12 bar blues. - The fifth verse is a variation of the first verse but with more rolls and three-finger licks incorporated.

Notes: This is a tune I wrote several years ago which was inspired by a musical phrase (a "lick") I heard on one of Sam Bush's albums. It's amazing what a lick can inspire. So I named the tune after Sam. It's a fun tune to play so I thought I'd throw it out there for whoever might be interested. I hope you enjoy :)

Notes: This is my version of the fun instrumental by Vernon Derrick. I came up with a lead part which pretty much mimics the triplet runs you'll hear fiddlers play for this tune. Then I came up with a note for note part for a twin banjo or that you can play with a fiddler who's playing lead. This is my first attempt at tabbing a tune. This is tabbed at 1/2 speed basically so I could more clearly convey the triplets, etc. I hope you enjoy!
