Notes: Here are 5 licks that you can use for a G-D-G turnaround. The first 4 are originals of mine. The first employs a chordal approach. The second substitutes a Bb chord for the D, to provide a kind of bluesy effect that is unexpected and punchy. The third is one of my default licks, which I have used in a variety of tunes. The fourth I have also used in many tunes, including "Are You Missing Me," which you can hear on my BHO page, at http://www.banjohangout.org/myhangout/media-player/audio_player2.asp?musicid=9864&archived= I have to tell you that for years I struggled with tabbing the correct timing on this one, and the solution came to me while I was sleeping -- I kid you not. The last one is a wonderful Bill Emerson lick. It is constructed beautifully, and I feel a sense of peace and oneness with the universe when I hear it. Okay, perhaps that's overstating it somewhat. But it is a great lick, which is anchored in the repetitive use of the C note, the flatted 7th, on the second string, with the melody notes doing a lovely walk up the first string.

Notes: Melodic banjo version of a fantastic fiddle tune. Thanks must go to Mike Stangland for his great guitar tab (also included here), from which the banjo tab has been created. I have put the key as Bb (Capo III - G shapes), as it is in this key that Bryan Sutton plays it and Stuart Duncan appears to cope ok on the fiddle! I hope you enjoy it.

Notes: This version of Daley's Reel combines Scruggs, single-string, and melodic styles, all of which I needed to capture the tune. My version was inspired by Kenny Baker's on fiddle. Notes: Dance Around Molly is a nice old fiddle tune, made known by Tommy Magness (who played with Bill Monroe and later with Roy Acuff in the 40's, and on Grand Ole Opry).
This tab represents several different styles:
1) Some kind of old-time melodic three-finger playing almost all notes as the fiddle plays. There is two variants of the first part (part A): first a high version and then a lower version down the neck version. In the fiddle recording part A is the low part which start on the low notes (fourth string on the fiddle) and goes up, but to play all the notes I chose to go up one octave. In the variation I cheat away the low notes.
2) Some kind of Scruggs style.
3) Clawhammer
Choose whatever style you like.

Notes: This tab is based on the playing in this Talise Tunes video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fph6LWquadM. She is in open G tuning capoed at the 6th fret for the key of C#. I hear syncopated drop thumb licks and have used those in the tab. If syncopation is awkward for you, replace the rests with a downstroke. If drop thumb is difficult for you, replace it with a brush stroke.

Notes: This is an attempt to make a three-finger version of Deep River Blues. It is mainly based on Doc Watson's version (on guitar) but I have listened to Merle Travis and Delmore Brothers too. It is played in the key of E in standard tuning but with the fifth string capod or spiked to a B on 9th fret

Notes: This an update to a tab I posted several years ago. "Deer River" is a clawhammer tune written by Chris Coole, the fine Canadian banjo player. Chris plays this in the key of F - fDGCD (or Sawmill tuning with the 5th string dropped to F from G). This tab adds a Part C that Chris plays at the end of the tune. The tab is based on this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJCjkkK23Vk

Notes: aEAC#E. This tune is tabbed out in the most basic open ended way I could figure. Everybody plays a little different so I just try to get the basic thing out. That doesn't mean it is easy but it doesn't mean it's hard. Tunes evolve over time. I actually had to undate one messure to how I play it today. As my old friend Bob Holt would put it "I wrote that tune...after I played it about a thousand times". Have fun with it. It is one of my favorites.

Notes: Ralph Stanley's "Dickson County Breakdown", a banjo breakdown that is basically a lot of common banjo licks over a simple melody, nonetheless great sounding and fun to play. Although rather close to Ralph's break, neither of the breaks are replicas of his own; they are fully my own interpretations. He doesn't do the up the neck break, but I thought it was fun so I threw it in there. Has useful, standard key of "G" introduction & ending that can fit on many songs. Includes a Rhythm Guitar & Bass rhythm track. Have fun!

Notes: On 8 December 1962 Flatt and Scruggs played their legendary concert at Carnegie Hall. It was not the first bluegrass concert at Carnegie Hall, having been preceded by Earl Taylor and the Stoney Mountain Boys, but it is certainly the most memorable. Dig a Hole in the Meadow was one of the songs the Foggies played, and it incorporates one of Earl’s most elegant breaks that nails the melody without over-reliance on formulaic rolls. Ironically, Bill Monroe recorded the song as Darling Cory just 2 days before, on 6 December 1962, with Lonnie Hoppers playing a break similar but not identical to Earl’s on banjo. Most bluegrass folk are probably familiar with the version by the Foggies, but you should definitely give a listen to Monroe’s version as well: His singing is outstanding, Kenny Baker's fiddle playing is beautiful as always, and Monroe takes a mandolin break that is positively eerie.

Notes: The Dill Pickle Rag was composed by Charles L. Johnson while working at the Carl Hoffman Music Company when one of the clerks was bringing him a carton of dill pickles for his dinner. Johnson declared: “I’ll call it Dill Pickles Rag.” and somewhere along the way the ‘s’ was dropped. Either way, it was one of his favourites and was subsequently recorded over 30 times on numerous 78 RPM recordings.
My first time hearing it was on a Don Reno recording with Bill Harrell & The Tennessee Cut-Ups, where Don utilizes some of his single-string picking, AKA Reno style, to hash out parts of the melody. For those not familiar, this is a bluegrass banjo sub-style that features multiple notes on the same string, played with a downstroke of the thumb and upstroke with the index finger. It emulates the flat-picking style on guitar but uses a thumb pick and finger pick instead of a plectrum. It takes a bit of practice to get a clean note as you have to time it perfectly with your right and left hands.
For the mandolinists out there, check out the version from Jesse McReynolds of Jim and Jesse & The Virginia Boys in his signature cross-picking style on the 1963 Newport Folk Festival live recording.
It seems all of the bluegrass recordings of this number have arranged it to have only two parts: A and B, like most fiddle tunes, and like most ragtime tunes imported to the bluegrass canon. However all ragtime tunes by definition have four parts, so this arrangement includes parts C and D as well. Parts A and B are in the key of G and then the next two parts modulate to the key of C.
As always, start slow! Once you have it down and are totally and completely bored with playing it, that’s how you know you are ready to speed up!
There is a video on the MOBS Facebook Page for reference.

This is a song about the suffering of Jesus Christ, even though I'm not religous this song still has an impact which anyone can appreaciate. Like in Many of Docks songs he brushes with his index finger on certain parts which gives it his unique sound, it is noted as Br in the tab with an arrow going upward. Thanks to Freddy Badger who introduced me to this song and gave me some tips which helped me transcribe it, (Search him on Youtube).

Notes: Here's an old tune from the late 20's (I think), "Doin' The Uptown Lowdown". I learned this from a Joe Venuti and his Blue Six recording from '34, with some help from "Joe Venuti and his Orchestra"'s recording. It's a cool number with a not too complicated chord progression that moves right along. The bridge, IMHO, is wonderful, how it hangs on that Bb7 and is just dying to resolve. A good number to jam on. Has a Rhythm Guitar & Bass rhythm track. Have fun!

Notes: Here is a fine old fiddle tune from Texas, Done Gone, in the key of Bb. There are actually 2 different versions here, both adapted from the two versions in the "Craig Duncan Master Fiddle Solo Collection". The first version, a three part tune, is accommodating of the lower register of the banjo note-for-note in the first and second parts, although some "octave switching" is needed in the third part. The second version requires the use of the upper register of the banjo, and is much more difficult. It's not a jam standard, but a fun piece to play and should you come across a fiddler who knows either version, it's an excellent tune to play. Has a Rhythm Guitar & Bass rhythm track. Have fun!

Notes: I transcribed this from Jim's sound file posted here. You will find that bars 13-16 are a bit different than on other passes through. I have written out bars 13-16 just as Jim played them, but you may find it easier to substitute bars 21-23, which are very similar to the intro. The tab itself cannot accurately describe Jim's exceptional nuance and dynamics... you'll have to listen very closely to duplicate which notes sing out, and which notes are tucked into the background.
This afternoon I went through this tab with Jim to ensure it's accuracy. I hope you enjoy it. - John

Notes: I've had to learn fiddle tunes on banjo for my current Celtic-oriented band. When I can't find a tab in a book or online, I have to work out my own three-finger arrangements. Typically, I start at one of the ABC Notation sites to get the basic melody.
This setting of Donnybrook Fair is the first one I've taken the time to enter in TablEdit. I'm uploading the same tab in PDF in case your TablEdit display and print preferences don't like my tab. (And in case you don't have the TEF player)
December 9, 2017: Uploaded new TEF and PDF files reflecting the way my fingering has changed. MIDI file still plays the old way (with some slides that I no longer play)

This clawhammer version of "Doug's Tune" is based on the 2010 YouTube video by oldthyme dragon (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMNYU-8aZdU ). It is really more of a ragtime tune than bluegrass. The syncopation in Part A requires either an upward brush stroke or a drop thumb to the 1st string. I chose the latter.

Notes: And now for something completely different: how about a bluegrass song about a guy murdering his (presumably pregnant) girlfriend? Notwithstanding its topic, Down in the Willow Garden is a very nice song, and it also serves as a fine instrumental. The tablature is inspired by Bill Keith’s version from a jam he recorded with Earl Scruggs in 1963 when Bill was working with Earl on the book “Earl Scruggs and the 5-string banjo.” In the recording I heard, Bill played banjo and Earl played 12-string guitar. An interesting aspect of Bill’s arrangement is that he played it first in the key of G and then modulated to the key of C, a very nice transition.

Notes: I made this tab on a request for a clawhammer tab, but it includes three different versions. Down On The Corner is a difficult clawhammer tune because of its calypso rhythm, three-finger style works much better. To get the calypso rhythm in clawhammer you must use some drop thumbs combined with "skips" (or air brushes), and emphasize the drop thumb notes. To get the calypso rhythm in 3-finger it is just to play a forward roll (T M t I M t I M - T for emphasize melody note played by thumb and t for thumb on fifth string)
The three versions I have tabbed are:
1. First the basic riffs, as played on guitar (but it is played one octave lower on guitar). It is important to get the right rhythm when playing this. Count fast 1-2-3-1-2-3-1-2 and the melody notes falls on the 1s.This can be played in any style.
2. Then a clawhammer version where I have tried to get the calypso rhythm. Be sure to get the drop thumb and the skips (air brushes) right to keep the rhythm. Your hand shall be moving in a steady up and down motion as in most clawhammer tunes, but the emphasized drop thumbs and skips will get the calypso rhythm effects.
3. And finally a three-finger version based on a simple forward roll. I think this is much easier than the clawhammer version because the forward roll fits into the calypso rhythm.

Notes: The tablature starts with an amalgam of Earl Scruggs's breaks from the 1949 recording and the video from 1956 (in volume 7 of the DVDs). It then proceeds to a version of one of Crowe's breaks from the Bluegrass Album Band, and finishes with a break of mine that was partially inspired, as I recall, by Alan Munde’s version. I first posted the tab on BHO in 2010, and here is an updated version.

Notes: "Drunkard's Lone Child," based on the playing of Dock Boggs. This song makes use of a 3 finger up picking style. The banjo follows the vocal melody. The thumb plays notes on the 3rd, 4th, and drone strings while the index and middle fingers play the 2nd and 1st strings, respectively. My version follows Boggs' 1963 recording, where he plays the initial verse a little differently from the rest. I have offered both ways in the tablature. The tab here is a basic outline, but in actual practice many liberties may be taken and variations played. I improvise a little when I play this, and I play with timing quite a bit, as Boggs often did. The tuning is f#CGAD.

Notes: I started working on this tune years ago, and got stuck at a few points, mainly fingering and some timing issues.
Hans Holzherr (howsybee) came to the rescue and filled in the blanks, particularly the bit with the triplets. I owe him for that!
From then on, I also did some reworking to make it flow under my fingers (so it's not nescesarily the way Jens played it!), but I think more than 95% of the notes are in the right spot.
Included are an example of how to play the tuner piece without Keith tuners.
Also there is the a tab of how I'm playing the ending.
