Notes: This is my interpretation of Hobart Smith's Wabash Blues from the album In Sacred Trust. The tuning is eAACD (with fourth string an octave below the third string). In the recording Hobart seems to be tuned about a half tone higher (fBbBbDbEb).

Notes: I just worked up a simple CH tab.... along the lines of the way I play it. The only real embellishments I've added are where I hammer on into the melody note on the first beat of some of the measures. For note... on the first beat and third beat of each measure where I only show a single note being played, I am actually either hammering down into the whole chord or already holding the whole chord down. As to the note on the third beat of each measure you may also wish to modulate up, down, or stay on the same note as the first note of that same measure... to suit your taste and depending on whether you are leaving the anticipation of leading into the next passage, or providing closure to the passage you are in.

Notes: This is how I play the ultimate sing-along-song, Wagon Wheel. Slap that capo onto whatever key you sing this song best in and play away. Listen to OCMS recording to figure out the timing of the verses.

Notes: Transcribed from Impedo's post on the Fiddle Hangout. I simplified the triplets, and even then the swing rhythm can be tough to get down in some places. Just listen to the OCMS version, slowed down if necessary.

Notes: Another short tune I wrote, this one is also in Cumberland Gap tuning, a Sawmill tuning variation (gEADE). Its Sawmill with a capo on the second fret, but the fifth string stays at 'g'. There is a little bit of 'drop-thumb', but its a pretty simple little tune, sad but sweet. There is a video of me playing it if you want to hear it. Enjoy.

Notes: Double C tuning Capo on the 2nd fret to make it Double D. This is following Lee Hammons version. If you're playing this on your own, like not in a jam / group, imagine you're walking into a parlor. A pace that's walking and brisk and for the B part, really nail that melody playing and keeping it smooth. For the drone note, be sure the 2nd time you pluck the drone in succession, it's different from the first time you plucked it. So, like a small accent but not really a loud accent.

Notes: A much better version of Washington & Lee Swing than my last, which had a lot of mistakes in it. This one is a completely banjo version, with 4 breaks, the last being a slight variation on the first. It does NOT include the second part, which is a throw-over from Don Reno's recordings of the tune (my inspiration) in which the key changes to G and the fiddle does the second part. It is in the key of C, standard G tuning. Has some funky rolls that I like to throw in there just to mess up banjo players and to make listeners say "huh?". I've always felt the timing in this tune had to be especially accurate to get it to sound good, so make sure you listen to one of Don Reno's recordings of it, as well as a jazz/western swing or marching band take on it. Has a Rhythm Guitar & Bass rhythm track. Have fun

For the chorus I use a long 2-4 slide on the 3rd string to for the word "Won't". Grandpa played in key of A, so capo 2 to match, and play around with the strumming. Grandpa Jones version can be heard @: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bi1tkL1ML4Q

Notes: A tab of David Eugene Edwards style of playing wayfaring stranger, based on a video of him playing it on youtube (link in tab). I've just made a straight-forward tab, and to make it simpler/smaller, I've just tabbed one variation of the verse, and used it throughout the song. In the video David plays it a little different each verse, as usual. I would recommend listening to his version of the song to find variations that you might want to use when playing this yourself. It might seem like a lot of stuff is going on in the tab since I've put in a few "ghost notes". This is just to hint that you don't have to play it note by note like a scholar. David plays a kind of two-finger thumb-lead, and the thumb brushes nearby strings now and again :) As usual it sounds quite rigid in guitar pro, but should come out fairly accurate on the banjo. Let me know if you like it or not, any feedback is welcome, feel free to comment!

Notes: Tab of the version of Rhiannon Giddens Wayfaring Stranger. I figured the tuning out by hearing the song. I hope it fits. It's just one measure you repeat over and over again in the key of C-Minor. Turn down your (minstrel) banjo four notes (from G to C; for the minor tuning on the second string from b to Eb; so you have C-G-C-Eb-G). Add a slide from the second to the third fret before playing the pull off from the third on the first string to point out the sound of your minstrel banjo.

Notes: Really pretty much beginner standard, apart from the brush-skips and chords. Not an easy key for most folk to sing in. The last 3 and a half bars are a bridge or coda, and not part of the original tune.

Notes: A simplified tab of "We Three Kings", a classic traditional Christmas song written in 1857 and published in 1863. A haunting melody, in standard G tuning and played in the Key of E minor. The 1st pages of this tab is a basic melody key, and the 2nd page is my clawhammer interpretation in 3/4 time. I've substitued D7 for the D chord since it is easier to transition from E minor to D7. Basically, the E minor chord is fretted at the D strings fretted at 2, and to make the B chord, just slide the E minor chord down to the 4th fret, and back again to E minor at the 2nd fret. I've provided alternate D measures, but there's little difference between the abbreviated D chord and D7 chord, and the D7 is a lot easier. Linked to Beginner Clawhammer, Clawhammer Gospel and Christmas Corner (It fits all 3). Lyrics and history links provided.

Notes: Here is Crowe's take on the Flatt and Scruggs chestnut, recorded in 1975 for Rounder 0044 "J. D. Crowe and the New South" but not released until Cracker Barrell's re-release in 2002. The first (low) break is one of the greatest IMHO, in which Crowe "plays the words." The second (high) break is more improvisational. Both are full of goodies.

Notes: Here is Earl Scruggs' solo for "Why Don't You Tell Me So?", from Flatt & Scruggs' Mercury sessions. It is note for note, unless I made a mistake ;) The walking bass line is actually taken from the vocal break, not the banjo break, but I like the sound. The guitar part is not taken from Lester in any way; that's the way I play in an E position (capoed up 1) on the guitar with a thumb and finger. One of the classic banjo solos of all time, in my opinion. Have fun!

Notes: This clawhammer tab is based on the cover of the Tom Petty song, "Wildflowers," by the Wailin' Jennys. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XhVILjWkNg )The level is beginner/intermediate. They play the tune in the key of B, using open-G tuning (gDGBD) capoed to the 4th fret. I indicate the chord shapes for G tuning. The actual chords for G, C and D7 capoed would be B, E and F#7. This tab is based on the banjo introduction and can be used to back up the vocal, though strumming chords works as well. The mid-song instrumental breaks follow a different pattern.

Notes: My version of WF is a bit different from some other nice ones on BHO (e.g., Jack Baker’s and Martin Blake’s) in that, as I was tabbing it out, I realized that I had been influenced by Eric Weissberg’s version on the Elektra LP “Folk Banjo Styles” (1961). Weissberg is the first 3-finger player I heard in the early 1960s, and I tried to figure out how he was playing those amazing things – all a prelude to my hearing and learning from Earl Scruggs and Bill Keith. So, although it is by no means a note-for-note interpretation of his version, consider this tab a tip of the hat to Eric Weissberg, particularly the second version of the B part.

Notes: A while back I searched out some Two Finger Thumb Lead versions of some of my favorite songs, but I was not able to locate them. Now that I feel I understand the style, I have decided to translate some clawhammer tunes to the TFTL style. This one is based of the clawhammer version of Will The Circle Be Unbroken that I found I. The Clawhammer Stule Banjo book by Ken Perlman. I hope it is easily understood. Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.

Notes: A bluegrass classic, written by Lester Flatt and first recorded by him with Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys (including, of course, Earl Scruggs). I pulled the first break off a radio recording of Flatt and Scruggs from 1957. The second break is more improvisational, including a Keith-ish melodic sequence, and the third break is a variation on the Scruggs approach and sticks to the melody. This was perhaps the first tune I worked out on my own, in the early 1960s, back before there were personal computers, smart phones, or Schitt’s Creek.

Notes: In response to a new player asking about tabs for Willin' -- by Lowell George -- and some other non-banjo songs, I decided to write out a version that I consider within reach of first-year players. It's all in the first four frets. The trickiest move may be an "inside roll" in which the middle finger picks the second string. The trickiest part for me was tabbing the pause before the famous line "And if you give me . . ." I didn't leave as long a pause as it could be and made that a measure of 6/8. It's still not right. I trust everyone who knows the song to wait as long as they want at that part. Sept 22 update: I have replaced the original TablEdit file with a version including keyboard, bass and drums (created in iReal Pro) that you can use as accompaniment.

Notes: I first learned this tune in September 2003 from a tab in the Banjo Newsletter. I have not had a copy of that tab since 2003 and it is not available in the BNL tab archive. The BNL tab was written by Hugh Strawn. It is not available on Hugh's web site, either. I am certain that my playing of the tune has changed over the years, but I can't say how or how much. I uploaded a video to the Hangout and got a request for a tab. This is pretty much how I play the tune.

Notes: This is a tune I picked up within the last 20 years and came up with an ever-evolving banjo version. I never tried to emulate any particular version of this tune nor have I tried to emulate a drop-thumb approach. My brain doesn't work like that. My approach is to simply play the tune in a Scruggs-based style which works just fine. In writing this tab I realized that I rarely play the tune the same way twice and pull from a body of licks on-the-fly as I play it. So, in this tab you will see I offer several variations for the same phrases which appear throughout the tune. This is a fun tune to play and I've noticed over the years that it's becoming more commonplace, part of a growing shared repertoire at jams and get-togethers.

Notes: The kickoff to Terry Baucom's great tune Winslow from the album 4th and Goal. Couldn't find it so I had to do it myself. A huge thanks to everyone on Banjo Hangout that's made my first year playing banjo pretty damn successful.

Notes: This is my take on Scott Vestal's second break on the tune 'Wired' from the 'Livewire' album. Although I've listed it as bluegrass and Scruggs style, I feel it's more like jazz, mostly in the single string style. I found it quite challenging to learn and there's a lot of innovative stuff here, plus some odd timing that's very different from bluegrass. This is my first attempt at tabbing a piece in Tabledit, and I've a lot to learn about the product but I hope my tab will give you a feel for the tune. Good luck!

Notes: In memory of Earl Scruggs, here is one of my favorites of Scruggs's breaks. If you pay attention to the nuances of the right hand patterns, you will see that Scruggs did not approach picking patterns in a formulaic way. He played the melody notes and found rhythm notes to flesh out the melody, without being strictly tied to the rolls that so many of us learned from his recordings.
