Notes: The old Italian/French song, "J'attendrai", arranged for Reno-style (labelled Scruggs, but really more Reno-ish) banjo. Also, it's labelled jazz, but it's really a Jazz tune arranged for bluegrass banjo; the chords are authentic though. Taken from Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grappelli, & the Hot Club de France's movie from 1939. The ending is played by planting the heel of the right hand behind (above) the strings, & brushing upward in rapid succession (eight notes) with the index & middle fingers; this is hard, but definitely doable with practice. The Django-style run can be played with thumb & index up to a certain speed, and can probably be played at faster speeds with all three fingers though I do not play this way. Have fun!

Notes: I believe this to be Jimmy's first recorded instrumental. From what I've gathered, he was 17-18 years old. Bandmate Wesley Golding provided the guitar lead. I have transcribed this as capo at 1, but am not certain that they weren't tuned slightly sharp from standard, and the transfer from analog to digital did the rest. Use your own judgment.

Notes: This is a little-known Don Reno banjo tune, Jacknife-in'. He actually played it at only a medium tempo, but this version here is blazing fast in the manner of Jeremy Stephens, who recorded it for his CD, "Scarlet Banjo". Some of these breaks here are based on some of his breaks, and some are my own. Due to the tempo, single string work, and some very quick changing of positions this is quite a difficult piece. Single string work is TITI. It's labled Open G (gDGBD), but it has the 5th capoed up 2 (at the 7th fret) for aDGBD, in the key of D. Also, it's labeled "scruggs", but it's really "Reno" style. Has a Rhythm Guitar & Bass rhythm track. Have fun!

Notes: Two of my favorite banjo pickers recorded Jamboree, Doug Dillard on “The Banjo Album” (1970) and Butch Robins on “Grounded-Centered-Focused” (1995). Both credit the tune to Andrew Welling, who is the composer of the music for many movies. Doug’s version is a bit frantic and repetitive, whereas Butch’s is more coherent, approachable, and interesting IMHO. You could say it is more grounded, centered, and focused. My tab is not intended to be a note-for-note transcription of Butch’s recording, but I did try to capture a bit of the spirit of his version. The trickiest bit is the right-hand fingering in the passing chords in the B part, and I have tabbed out the fingering I use to pick the strings in that section. If you find a way to play the section that is easier for you, however, go for it. Butch recorded it in the key of Bb, but I have posted it in the key of G.

Notes: "Jeb's Tune" is a jam tune played in wildly different ways in various YouTube videos. I based this tab mostly on this Clifftop Jam: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cb-INxR7X5c&t=144s . There appear to me to be 4 parts, mostly, though the order of appearance changes during this lengthy jam. Everyone is following the fiddlers' lead. I have included chords for guitar, but they are fairly freeform as well. Don't expect precision in this tab. Just have a good time with it.

This song, with all it's fun dominant progressions, always made me smile, and I unknowingly learned and transcribed it the same day he passed away (Jul 12, 2020). I only hope he is smiling down as I play it. RIP Gordon! (I also added a bass line arrangement to the TablEdit file for accompaniment.)

Open G tuning for this fiddle part (optional capo 5th fret for original recording in C/Am) if so the total span of the banjo, lowest to the highest frets are used. Also included is the actual banjo backup part with a separate tab. This banjo is tuned down in Em (eBEGB = -3-3-3-4-3) as in the original recording (same option of capo 5th fret rendering Am aEACE). Notes: This is my take on the beautiful version of Jerusalem Ridge recorded by Butch Robins on his classic album "The Fifth Child." Robins's version is similar to Bob Black's, which Jack Baker provided a wonderful tab for quite some time ago, but it differs in subtle ways and is, to my ear, closer to Kenny Baker's version on the fiddle. Robins apparently played in standard G tuning, but I find it to be easier in G minor tuning.

Notes: This is my transcription of Mark O'Connor's fiddling on the first Transatlantic Sessions from the late 80s [See the video on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QiF7bh1reM]. A brilliant tune, but far from easy. It starts in G, moves to C and back again, then modulates to D for the penultimate part before returning to the original theme in G. Good luck!

Notes: by Bradbury/Warner. Arrangement by Wayne Conrad. My first tab. While watching TV and goofing around with this tune, I was trying to come up with some way to vary the "bum ditty" to keep the arrangement from sounding repetitive. I stumbled on the idea of playing the "ditty" using two quarter notes instead of two eight notes. The first half of this song is done with the usual "bum ditty," but the second half uses the two-quarter-note "bum ditty" wherever the word "me" occurs in the lyrics. These are all half notes or dotted half-notes in the melody, and a great place for a slower rhythm. I'm sure this is an old idea in clawhammer, but it's new to me. I hope you enjoy it.

This tab and MP3 are in standarg G tuning for ease of learning. The song is in 6/8 time with quarter notes followed by an eighth note or a rhythm of dah-dit dah-dit. The picking style is two-finger.

Notes: Jig version of "Greenfields of America". Well, there is a little bit of that theme, but it's not as strong as I suspected it would be, but it's a fun jig to play in any case. Fingering for jigs is always "M-something-M M somthing-M", where that something is a hammer-on, a pull-off, or a drop-thumb. If there are exceptions I indicate it. In this tune there are two up-picks and two measures that have M-M-M M-M-M. Other than that, pretty easy to play. Oh, the source was "The Dance Music of Ireland, O'Neill's 1001", number 206. Enjoy!

Notes: Tossed out this morning in response to a request for it. Largely melodic style Errors may and probably are included, and there may be easier ways to play it than written here. Note: in segments like Measure 14, where you see the fourth, third, second and first string played sequentially, the way to handle that is with a square roll (T-I-T-M).

Notes: Jingle Bells (AKA One Horse Open Sleigh) was composed by J. Piermont in 1857. Here is an attempt to illustrate how the tune may have been played around 1880-1890 during the socalled classic banjo era. Its played in the classic banjo style or "guitar style" that is based on the use of three (sometimes four finger)

Notes: For all the new banjo Dads out there, here is Brahm's Lullaby I have arranged for the five string banjo! I originally set out to transcribe this tune to play for my two boys, Jack and Henry, who are now 4 months old. Holy cow, time fly's! I hope this can come in use for some more little ears new to a bluegrass family, cause lets be honest, firing down on some blazing Scruggs tune can be a little bit of a culture shock for the little ones. So now you can baby step them into the banjo life!

Notes: A little known Celtic style tune that I learned from Cotswolds' fiddler Matt Gryspeerdt, arranged for melodic style banjo. Matt believes it was written in New York by an expat Irishman, but has been unable to find absolute confirmation of its origin. The move G to Bm is fairly unusual in Irish music. Nice tune, rocks along quite well. I have uploaded the TablEdit file as well as the straight notation for the benefit of fiddle players(pdf) and the tab & chords in pdf also.

Notes: There are some terrific versions of John Hardy out there in different tunings. I am thinking of Eric Weissberg's version on "Folk Banjo Styles," an Elektra LP from 1961. Alan Munde also a very interesting version that Lee Marcus has provided a tablature for on BHO. My version is in good ole G tuning, the default tuning of bluegrass banjo. I have included 4 breaks. The B part on several of them is challenging and will require some work. Altogether, there is probably more variation here than I would use on stage or in a jam, and I include it just to show you the possibilities. One aspect to note is that melody notes on the high break (# 3) are played on the first string with the middle finger. This may seem counter-intuitive, but it works.

Here is my interpretation of his straightforward elegant break in G from the Flatt and Scruggs tv show on WSM, with vocal by Hylo Brown. You can find Scruggs's version in Vol. 1 of the DVDs, and also on youtube.com.

Notes: This is a close rendering of Wade Ward's playing on the Clawhammer Banjo, v.1 album (County Records). Uncle Wade had his banjo pitched to C# in the recording, so you could treat this as a C tune or D tune. I like it tuned lower as a banjo piece, but my guess is that a fiddler would prefer it in D.

Notes: Similar to my original setting, here I include intervallic variation (both parts) and rhythmic variation, incorporating a string of triplets in the B part. The "short" (fiddle) rolls or graced triplets in the first part of my first setting are now replaced by a pair of 16th notes and an 8th note, and are typical Scottish fiddle ornaments used for reels and hornpipes. This tune could be turned into a Scottish strathspey by inserting Scots snaps (reverse dotted pairs) and dotted-eighth-note combinations.

Notes: This is from the version in Ryan's Mammoth Collection. You have to do a few techniques like alternate string pick-offs, a 2 note m-finger arpeggio, and fretting the fifth short string. There are three spots where I do a quick-up pick. I have fairly small hands, and this is the only way I can get the necessary volume on the high bs, but you might be able to do a hammer-on with your pinky for a more consistent melodic clawhammer style.I see that O'Neil's Music of Ireland (the 1850 melodies one) has a version, number 1437, that has some grace notes, tripplets, and "c"s raised to "c#s". I haven't explored that one yet... We'll see what happens...

I've redone it in TablEdit. It was one of my first ventures into playing in C out of an open G tuning. Actually got published in BNL. Uses Munde-style technique.

Notes: This tab is generally based on the version by David Lindley (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASyAUgVsRZE ). Lindley plays a wildly varying version with a slow preamble, an upbeat intro, and then 3 parts that he varies in terms of repeats, volume, strumming style, etc. This tab provides a basic version of the upbeat intro and Parts A, B and C. Assemble them in a way that pleases you. The key is C# - gCGCD capoed at the 1st fret.

Notes: I found an excellent transcription of Bill Keith: Jordu on BHO: https://www.banjohangout.org/tab/browse.asp?m=detail&v=21536
It was an eye opener, especially for the chord melody bits. But Keith ironed out the sixteenth note triplets and the chromatic passings, presumably in order to execute a full-throttle bluegrass tempo, Setting it around the tempo recorded by the composer, Duke Jordan (Miles Davis a little faster, Clifford Brown a little slower) I have attempted to restore those lovely wrinkles, the ones I sweated over on guitar many years ago in the original E flat. The chords are (transposed) from the Real Book and rendered in a standard 1/2 bar format. In the chord melody bars Keith has replicated the horn counterpoint found in the Clifford Brown arrangement but given them a syncopation of his own, in respect to that found in Brown's rhythm section, letting his (BK) section stick to a bluegrass feel. Time here is as per the Real Book chart, I note these prior arrangement choices as points of interest. The coda is a bit of fluff of my own device.
I have .gp file, contact me if you can use it.

Notes: This is the arrangement featured on The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy movie soundtrack. It can either be played in 3-finger style, or flatpicked (if you're proficient with a flat pick, that is). The tuning is Open Cm (c C G C Eb); the fifth string is tuned to a high-C note (you'll need a fifth-string capo to achieve this pitch). There are two midis provide. The first midi gives you the sound of each string in the Cm tuning. The second midi follows the tab note for note.

Notes: This is my rendition of this nice old fiddle tune, arranged for twin banjos. I have also created a YouTube video where I added a third rolling backup part, so you can get a good idea of how this sounds. At this link: https://youtu.be/6MKMOtVWLpM

Notes: This version of June Apple is an attempt to mimic the feel of the Scruggs and melodic version I posted earlier: https://www.banjohangout.org/tab/browse.asp?m=detail&v=24277. Perhaps the trickiest bit is measure 16, which requires you to fret the 5th string -- much easier to do when the capo is on fret 2.

Notes: Tab is written as if you were playing by yourself. Simplify melody if you would play in a band setup. Solo part is at the end of the tab.
