Notes: This is a transcription of the Andante movement from J.S. Bach's Sonata for solo violin No. 2 in A minor, BWV 1003. The original is in C Major, but I have transposed it to G Major. Not that everything on the banjo needs to be in G Major, of course, but this piece is especially resonant in the banjo's most idiomatic tonal area.

Notes: This is a very easy tune to play on the banjo if you're used to playing melodic style. The arrangement is largely built around a number of left hand positions. For example, the first position is the 1st finger on the 7th fret of the D string, 2nd finger on the 7th fret of the B string, and pinky on the 9th fret of the G string. If you can hold that position, your right hand can do all the work. Hope you enjoy this tune as much as I have. :)

Notes: BtFM is a neat tune by Johnny Warren and Charlie Cushman, from their album "Purely Instrumental." Charlie Cushman is one of the foremost current practitioners of driving Scruggs-style banjo, and in my opinion he captures Scruggs’s nuances, touch, and tone as well as anybody (and better than most). The tab is not strictly faithful to his version, although I did try to render parts of it note-for-note.

Notes: This is a tune by Jim Reed, one of the BHO's most talented pickers and contributors. Banjo Hell is the name of our campsite at the Appalachian String Band Festival held every summer at Clifftop, West Virginia. I tabbed this out based upon a recorded performance from Jim's CD, Jim Reed, Family and Friends. Jim's banjo is tuned f#DGAD, a tuning that Dock Boggs used once in awhile. I have also seen Jim play this tune with the banjo tuned aDGAD. He never picks anything twice the same way.

Notes: Here are 3 pretty straightforward breaks to this jaunty little murder ballad. The first is down the neck, the second is up the neck, and the third employs Keith/Scruggs tuners. To understand the section of the tab with Keith tuners, you will need to hear it by playing the MIDI.

Notes: A rather simplified version of that great Civil War tune "Battle Cry of Freedom",
also known as "Rally Round the Flag Boys". It's a clawhammer version in G, but can be played solo in Bb (A#) so capo 3 from G (or tune up 3 frets). To play along with the 2nd South Carolina version Youtube link, play in G, remembering that this version is played on a Minstrel Banjo, and has a more haunting sound to it. I've linked this to the Beginner Clawhammer Group.

Notes: BSB is a brilliant original banjo tune written by Bill Keith. It has a remarkable internal logic, a flow of melody notes, which is not surprising given Bill’s penchant for mathematics. Many years ago I posted a tab of BSB, but in recently watching a youtube video of Bill playing the tune I detected some errors in my tab. So I have tried to render a tab that is closer to the way he played it. The B part is particularly difficult for the left hand. Pay attention to the section in measure 11, where the trick is to use your index finger to barre the 1st and 2nd strings at the 10th fret and then fret the 5th string at the 14th fret by s-t-r-e-c-h-i-n-g over with your ring finger. It probably would help to have fingers like bananas (which I don’t have). Capo up 2 to play in the key of A.

Notes: Here's a Texas fiddle favorite, "Beaumont Rag". I have it arranged here in my favorite key of F. Labeled "Bluegrass (Scruggs) style, but it's mostly single string and some Reno rolls. There are 2 and a half breaks, the first 2 are adaptions of standard fiddle breaks, with the outro half-break being some doodlings of my own. It might take some convincing to get your jam to do it in F instead of the more common bluegrass keys of D or C, but it's worth it. Has a Texas-ish-style Rhythm Guitar & Bass rhythm track. Have fun!

I didn't know whether to classify this as beginner or intermediate. I consider myself a beginner but perhaps some of these chords might be a challenge to the raw beginner. I am aslo uploading a separate TAB with lyrics and chords. I find them useful learning a new song and picking out the melody.

Notes: The «deacon from hell» is a french-canadian tune that is very modal going back and forth between major and minor, it is also very crooked. 'Legend has it that Thomas Pomerleau, (the composer of this tune), promised a priest that he would throw his violin into the stove in order to receive absolution. He actually threw his violin into the stove and, having received his absolution, immediately withdrew it ... he had taken the precaution not to light the stove'. Notes: In Bela Fleck's Homespun video, he provides a tab for only the basic melody for Sammy's Blues. Then, he goes on to play 2 more improvised performances, telling the viewer to "just listen and take what you can" from these fancier licks that he would use if he were to actually perform the tune. This tab is for the 1st of the two performances.
NOTE: The file is designed to be viewed at 4 bars per line, so you should expand the Tabledit window to achieve this. The patterns will stand out more clearly. Make sure the MIDI "Swing" setting is set to "1" to make the audio sound correct.

(Thumb, Index, Thumb, Index) when starting on the beat, or when starting a phrase before the bar line, with an even number of notes. Likewise, he almost exclusively uses the right hand pattern of "I T I..." when starting a phrase before the bar line, with an odd number of notes. I tried to notate this in the tab so it would be clear to the reader.

Notes: Belles of Blackville was the old-time Tune of the Week for 11/4/16. As played by James Bryan, Alabama fiddler, this clawhammer version is in the uncommon tuning of a Gm variant -- aDGAD, though it's also played in double C tuning. The tune was supposed to have been collected by Pennsylvanian folklorist Samuel P. Bayard in the 1930's from William Morris.

Notes: Along with Earl Scruggs and Bill Keith, Allen Shelton was one of my major influences and inspirations when I was learning to play bluegrass banjo. It was a thrill to see him with Jim and Jesse at the University of Chicago Folk Festival in 1966, where he wowed the audience (and me) with his banjo prowess. Bending the Strings is a clever original piece by Shelton, and one that involves the use of Keith/Scruggs tuners. I read somewhere that he wrote it when he was a teenager, an indication of how talented he was. I have tabbed it so you can play it without D tuners, although I have indicated above the tab the proper moves if you have tuners. The first break resembles the way Shelton played BTS, but it is not note-for-note. The second break is reminiscent of Bill Keith's version and includes some neat ideas. You can find Keith's recording of it on his 1992 CD "Beating Around the Bush," which should be in every bluegrass banjo player's collection.

Notes: If you’re looking for a fun tune that combines melodics, single string, and a swing feel, look no further than Alan O’Bryant’s Big Cow in Carlisle. After hearing this on the radio, I quickly perused the Hangout for the tab but only found someone’s request for it. YouTube only offered the recording by the Nashville Bluegrass Band. Still green in the world of transcribing banjo tunes, I decided to take on the challenge. After several slowed down listens, thanks to YouTube’s speed setting, I feel I have a solid representation of the tune.
In the first, full measure, I use my pinky for the hammer-on to facilitate an easier maneuver for the ring finger on the 3rd string-7th fret and the middle finger on the 2nd string-2nd fret, but if that isn't comfortable for you, do what is! At the 2nd ending, make sure to bring out the syncopated line with the 5-4-3 on the D string. Alan does this so well, the open 3rd and 1st strings are hardly noticed.
Be sure not to rush the hammer-on at the down beat of the B section. It isn't anticipated as a 16th note, and your picking index finger jumps up to the 4th string to execute the slide in the following measure. Release the string with your fretting hand, making that note staccato (note the rest) as well as the following two quarter notes on the 1st string. The same is true for the following two quarter notes on the 2nd string at the 8th fret. Listening to the recording will help immensely.
Note the single string in m. 23. Pretend you're Wes Corbett, and start with the index finger since you've just used your thumb. I heard in an interview he taught himself single string and started with his index. You can transition to a more traditional thumb lead using the middle finger on the 2nd string, but it changes the tone pattern (plastic vs. metal pick).
The form of the tune is a bit uneven: A1-A2-A1-A2-B-A2. In the second grouping of A sections, another instrument alternates with the lead. However, the banjo's ending break is shortened, leaving out the two middle A sections, rendering the form A1-A2-B-A2.

Notes: This is my first clawhammer banjo arrangement. I learned of the song from the 2000 Coen Brothers movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" and have loved listening to it ever since, but have never found a decent arrangement on the banjo. I spent quite a bit of time arranging this from just the melody (which I included as the top staff, for reference). I used MuseScore to compose the piece and you should be able to go to MuseScore.org to listen to the playback. Many thanks to "Haywire Mac" McClintock for the original composition.

Notes: Here is my version of a classic tune by Bill Monroe and Kenny Baker, normally played in the key of A (capoed up two). The breaks involve a judicious mixture of Scruggs and melodic playing. Pay particular attention to the third break, in which I attempt to capture the feel of Kenny Baker's approach to the tune on the fiddle. Ah, Kenny Baker.

Notes: Tabbed out the intro the way Noam plays it. I've included the right hand fingerwork on important passages, which makes it playable. Not for the fainthearted. Lots of index-finger-above-the-thumb picking. NOTE: I can't get a 5th string capo in GP6, so add 2 frets on the 5th string in the tab.

Notes: My take on Pikelny's first break on Big Sandy River -- you know, the easy one -- from "Noam Pikelny Plays Kenny Baker Plays Bill Monroe." I emphasize that there are multiple ways to play the same notes, especially on the up-the-neck parts, and I may not have captured the exact way he plays it. This is an exceptionally difficult piece played at a blistering tempo. So buckle up your seat belts. As for his other breaks to BSR: Well, you're on your own. Good luck

Notes: My arrangement of this popular fiddle tune. Influenced by several sources.
I don't include fingering because in most case it's obvious and I assume anyone who plays melodics has their preferred ways of getting at the basic formations that come up in this arrangement. I will note that there's some use of middle finger on 2nd string, usually at the top end of a forward roll. In measure 19, for the 3-note backward roll starting on 2nd string I actually use my index finger for both 2nd and 3rd strings. It's non-conventional, but it works for me, especially at the moderate tempo of this tune. You're free to use middle on 2nd for a true 3-finger backward roll, as Tony Trischka and Bela Fleck would. Thank you to Hangout member Sam Parks for letting me use the guitar, mandolin and bass tracks from his TablEdit file. Saved me a lot of time.

Notes: Does the world really need yet another recipe for boiled cabbage? Probably not, but this one offers two versions. The first has a tiny hint of "old time" to it; the second is entirely rolls and, if nothing else, is good for practice. Or you can mix and match them, a bar or two here and there, and see what you come up with. Makes a good "second tune", after "Arkansas Traveler".

The tab is written such that you can follow along with the recording. Chords are basic, i.e. not necessarily exactly what is being played by the guitar. Adjust settings so that chords are displayed as letter names only, tab is displayed at 4 bars per line, and view is scaled to 16th notes. Bill Keith's left hand fingerings are included, but may be considered unusual or difficult by some. Other fingerings are possible and might be preferable by players with different sized hands and/or banjo necks.

Notes: This tab is my interpretation of how Bill Keith played the tune on the "Bill Keith and Jim Collier" album. The tab is written such that you can follow along with the record. Note that the first half of the second banjo solo appears to have been overdubbed using a banjo with a capo at the 6th fret (& 11th fret for the 5th string). However, this tab was written such that one can play the entire tune without a capo. See the notes on the last page of the tab for more info. Notes: Bill Keith was scheduled to teach at the Alabama Folk School at Camp McDowell this spring, and consequently I was very excited to get to pick his brain for 4 whole days. However, he unfortunately had to decline due to a "health issue beyond his control." So, I thought I'd just learn a few of his tunes anyway. Why not start with one of the first ones that made him famous… the "Devi's Dream" and "Sailor's Hornpipe" medley from the "Livin' On The Mountain" album? This should be a note for note transcription, with the possible exception that there were a couple of spots where he may have used a "pull-off" lick getting to the A minor chord, but I couldn't really tell. I didn't include it, so the A minor bits are played around the 5th fret, instead of the first. Adjust settings so that chords are displayed as letter names only, tab is displayed at 4 bars per line, and view is scaled to 16th notes. I wish him well and hope that his health improves so that he might make it back in the future.

Notes: This is a note for note transcription of how Bill Keith played this tune on his "Something Auld, Something Newgrass, Something Borrowed, Something Bluegrass" album. Both banjo breaks are included along with the backup for the mandolin and fiddle. In other words, the tab is written such that you can follow along with the recording. Chords are notional, i.e. not necessarily exactly what the banjo is playing at any given moment, but what I think the basic chords are for the general tune, for each bar. Adjust settings so that chords are displayed as letter names only. Also, this tab is intended to be displayed at 4 bars per line. I just found out yesterday, from my Dad, that Bill Keith had died the day before. I wish I had a recording to upload instead, but this is the best I can do for now, to honor one of the great pillars of modern banjo music and technique.

Notes: This is a note for note transcription of how Bill Keith played this tune on his "Something Auld, Something Newgrass, Something Borrowed, Something Bluegrass" album. There are similar, single solo, tabs in Tony Trischka's books "Melodic Banjo" and "Bill Keith Banjo," that certainly have enough info to play the tune similar to the way Bill did it. However, for those of you who are interested in all of the specific details, (or just can't stand it when the books leave them out) this should be exactly how Bill played it on the record. The tab is written such that you can follow along with the recording. Notes: I dislike capoing above the 4th fret. Hence when I wanted to work out a break to Billy in the Lowground, many years ago, I did not want to capo at the 5th fret and play out of the G position. When I heard I Don Stover’s rendition in drop C tuning, I was inspired to use drop C for my break, and I incorporated some strange ideas. Note that the B part played by some people goes to the F chord (4), whereas other people’s versions go to Am (6m). My tab goes to the F chord, but you can change it to Am by substituting an E note for the F note. I also mimic a little bit of Clarence White in the B part.

I have made a minor change in the way I play the tune, since my 1978 tab was published. I now play the first two notes as a drop thumb, index on open 1st string, to thumb while fingering the 4th fret on the 2nd string. This change is also at the end of the 4th measure where the phrase repeats. I hope you all will not have trouble with the old Banjo Newsletter tab form in which the numbers appear in the spaces. In my tab, I've corrected the incorrect tuning, in that it was printed backwards in the Banjo Newsletter in 6/78.

Notes: This tune was written by the great Don Stover. I always wanted to play it and then one day I was fooling around and it started to come to me. When I listen to Don's recording on "Things In Life" he plays at lighting speed. It's in G tuning but in the key of c (use C shapes).

Notes: The classic show-piece for fiddle, "Black Mountain Blues/Rag" arranged here for Scruggs/Reno style banjo (capo 2). This piece is difficult at a medium tempo, let alone the burning fast velocity it sounds best (in my opinion) at. The 2nd chorus is an example of Don Reno's continuous roll pattern, which is a forward roll with no breaks until the end of the chorus. Thus it sounds almost too syncopated, and the timing is down with a lot of pull-offs & hammer-ons. I have experimented with a triple pull-off á la Don's "Green Mountain Hop", (which is this same piece albeit in the key of D), to imitate the "crazy" fiddle part (you have to hear the tune to know what I'm talking about). Needless to say it's quite difficult at any tempo! There are a few small single string parts in the first two A sections, which are kinda difficult to pull off cleanly. Has a Rhythm Guitar & Bass rhythm track, as well as a guitar kick-off. Have fun!

Notes: My tablature to BMR comprises 2 breaks. The first is the way I often play it. The second is my approximation of a break by the great Bill Emerson, one of my favorite banjo players. He recorded 2 breaks to BMR on his album “Gold Plated Banjo.” You can find the first break in the Bill Emerson tab book published by Acu-Tab. Here I have included my tab of his very improvisational second break.

It's based on the live performances found on youtube by David Eugene Edwards, thus altered a bit from the original album track in the chorus section.

Notes: These are some variations on this cool instrumental I've come up with to spice things up a little bit. It seemed every banjo picker knew a well known melodic version but that was about it, so I wanted to come up with some Scruggs-type ways to approach this tune, with a little chromatics thrown in here and there. I especially enjoy the stuff I came up with for Part B ... lots of fun to be had with this tune. I also have a rambling video I made back in 2013 which shows some of these licks in play ... https://youtu.be/5qdZJgmL7Ig

Notes: Some years ago, in wandering around the internet I discovered and downloaded a file entitled “Flatt & Scruggs, Live Shows 1956 - 1959.” One track was a fiddle/banjo duet on Blackberry Blossom, with Earl Scruggs playing backup to the fiddle. The chords in his backup were minimal: In contrast to the usual structure, his A Part included only G and D chords, and his B Part was only in E minor. But it is vintage Scruggs-style backup and well worth listening to. In the tablature I have tried to capture Earl’s backup, although I found it difficult to decipher his playing in the B Part. So treat it as an approximation. To put his backup in context, I have added a banjo track playing the melody, but it is muted so that you can hear the backup track more clearly. If I could play the fiddle I would have included the fiddle track instead. However, you can also listen to the recording of Earl and Paul Warren, posted on the Media section of my BHO page.

Notes: I've put in some fretting-hand fingerings, which I don't normally do. This one is tricky. It's not Old Time, and it's not exactly Bluegrass. But it is a melody, the way I hear and feel it, as a waltz and as a slow air (with rubato). I have added optional fermatas, but these only come into play when one is slowing it way down (not as the country waltz).

Notes: The first elegant melodic break to BB I heard was by Bill Keith on the Zap Records LP “Dobro and Fiddle,” by Kenny Haddock and Billy Baker (one of Monroe’s former fiddlers), released in 1967. He subsequently recorded it with the supergroup Muleskinner, in 1973. Bill’s breaks were delightful and stayed close to the melody, unlike the excursions into banjo noise practised by many of his successors, and they were played at breakneck knuckle-busting speed. For an example of the cleverness of his break, note how he used ascending scales in the first run-through of the A part and then descending scales in the second run-through. Brilliant. Catch the video of Muleskinner on youtube.com, to see a young and bearded Bill Keith playing some outstanding banjo on BB and a bunch of other tunes.
The tab I have posted here is pretty close to the way I hear Bill playing it, and I give you two of his endings, the first from the Billy Baker recording and the second from Muleskinner. Note that the backup chord structure can be complex as in the tab and Muleskinner recording, or simple as in the Billy Baker recording. Either way it’s a great tune.

Notes: Blackberry Blossom rearranged to the 6/8 jig rhythm. Bare bones version, strictly following the original melody - usually one of four notes is omitted (I hope I've made the right choices). Notes: This is banjo - guitar duet of Paul McCartney's Blackbird. The guitar is from Paul's playing. The interesting is that he uses only 2-finger chords, fretting mostly the second and the fifth string, and uses the open third string as a kind drone. The banjo is a relatively simple 3-finger with mixed forward and backward rolls to match the rhythm of the guitar.

In working this up I discovered that Paul does not always play it the same way, occasionally adding in some transitional or "bridge" measures before the 3rd and 4th verses, and sometimes only before the 4th verse. This version is the latter.
Anyway, this is a fun tune to play and beautiful to hear. I hope you enjoy.

Notes: This is my arrangement of Bela's banjo intro to "Bloomin Rose". His banjo is tuned gGCEG. It's the same tuning as standard open G, but just shifted down to open C. This can be played in open G and it still sounds lovely. Hoping to transpose the other parts Bela plays in the song and make a full instrumental out of it.

Notes: From the Smithsonian Folkways album "Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys: live recordings 1956 - 1969, off the record volume 1." The B part of Keith's break is particularly interesting, in my opinion. After playing the tune, Monroe commented that Keith's banjo playing was so good it gave him chills.

Notes: Scruggs's break to BRCH is one of his classics. In its deceptive simplicity and elegance it ranks up there with his break to "No Mother or Dad," in my opinion -- it is a break in which he really plays the words. The first break by Scruggs is my attempt to capture his recorded version with Lester Flatt, and the second break is an amalgam of variations I have heard on various radio and concert recordings by Flatt and Scruggs. The next 2 breaks are my own, with some elements based on Bill Keith's playing. Flatt and Scruggs recorded BRCH in B flat; so capo up 3 if you want to play along with the recording.

Notes: This tab is from Steve Martin's "Crow" CD (and not to be confused with the tune written by Jay Unger). Martin plays this 3-finger style, but the request was for clawhammer. Sawmill tuning is used rather than double-C (with capo at 2nd fret) to get the low note at the end of Part A. Part C is like a long bridge that may be played or not. The tab is based on this YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkODMBIgWr0

Notes: This unusual version of "Bonaparte's Retreat" comes from Melvin Wine. Unlike other versions, it is in 6/8 time as a jig. Also has an unusual variant of G tuning (gBGBD) capoed at 2nd fret for the key of A (aC#AC#E). Melvin's father wouldn't let him touch his fiddle, but Melvin would play it while his father was away from the house. This is the first tune Melvin played for his father and that convinced him to let young Melvin continue to play his fiddle. Thanks to Carl Baron for clearing up many things about this arrangement. You can Melvin play this tune at Slippery Hill or Bearea archives.

Notes: The trad oldtime version of Bonaparte's Retreat with tabs and recordings for two octaves. The low A part uses a lot of left hand ornamentation, so some may find the high A part easier. For the B part the roles reverse. The high B part requires playing and staying up around the 10th fret compared to the low B part which never leaves first position. For this reason the easiest way to start with the tune is probably mixing the octaves. I’ve included a tab with this mixed configuration along with the tabs that stick to their octaves. No matter what octaves you choose, I recommend trying to stick pretty firmly to a bum-dit-ty pattern with a brush in the “dit.” This tune traditionally used a lot of drones and keeping the patter will help give that impression despite the short sustain of the banjo.

Notes: Here's a tab for William H. Stepp's 1937 version of Bonaparte's Retreat. It's rather different from the older version, being much faster and having an altered melodic structure, but the link is evident with some study and playing it sure is fun. To play the Stepp version on banjo one must use almost exclusively hammer-ons and pull-offs as the tune is a barrage of eighth notes alternating up and down the scale. With some practice it is doable, but it may take a while to get it up to speed. The A part is always the same, sans ornamentation, but there are two versions of the B part. The melodies are the same they are in different octaves (both in first position though). The traditional way of playing it is to play the low B on the first and the high B on the second. Repeat this cycle to the end of the tune.

Notes: This is my interpretation of John Lee Hooker's great rock hit from the 1960. It is played three-finger style in the key of G in G tuning (John Lee Hooker played in E or F on guitar). I have tried to arrange the tune for acoustic instrument, from Hooker's electric guitar. The "instrumental break" is my own, but inspired from Hooker.

Notes: This is my most recent interpretation of Bobby Thompson's 2nd break on the Jim and Jesse recording from the early 1960s. Note that the melody is played in more of a single string style rather than melodic style, though it could be played pretty closely using a melodic style. Bobby was good at single string and melodic style (as well as Scruggs style).

Notes: Bound for Jasper emerged on a recent long drive home from Canada’s magnificent West Coast, with an overnight stop in Jasper National Park, Alberta. The B Part employs what I have called the “staircase” roll, learned from the playing of Don Stover. As you will see, the structure of the tune is AAB. I dedicate BfJ to the memory of my dear friend Dr. Neil Cowie – anesthesiologist, storyteller, banjo player – who died on 18 June 2016. Goodbye, Old Pal.

Notes: This was composed by Adrian Leroy, whose years were 1520 - 1598. The tuning, gDGBE capoed at the 5th fret, gives you the same tuning as the Renaissance guitar, the instrument it was written for. Of course we have the added advantage of the fifth string, which I used a lot here (see bars 10, 12, and 27). Enjoy!

Notes: This tab and midi file is a triple rendering of Breaking Up Christmas meant to compare and contrast "Round Peak" clawhammer banjo with other ways of playing the tune. This first rendition is melodic, almost note for note as Tommy Jarrell fiddled. The second rendition is "Round Peak" based on the banjo playing of Fred Cockerham and others. The third rendition is basic clawhammer (but not "Round Peak" and not "melodic") based on the playing of Hilarie Burhans. NOTE: the tab (pdf) comprises two pages. They should be laid side-by-side for viewing so that all the tabs line up properly. The tabs are arranged on the pages so that you can compare each measure in the three versions note-for-note.

Notes: This is an attempt to play Simon&Garfunkel's old hit. I started to work on this tune in the 1970's and at last I think I have come to something that can be presented for others. This arrangement is basically for a sole banjo where I have tried to pick up a little of the rhythm and of the harmonies in the song. I added a rather simple guitar accompaniment, mostly on the bass strings to give the right rhythm. The melody notes are to a large extend played by I/M pinches, where the melody note is played on the first string (middle finger) and the index plays a supporting harmony note below the melody note.

Notes: "Bright Sunny South," based on the version by Dock Boggs, but presented here in thumb lead 2 finger picking style. I included the right hand fingering for the first part of the tune. Basically, the index finger plays the 1st string, and the thumb plays all others. My version of this tune is constantly changing. I use variations of this style through different verses, sometimes even including thumb/index pinched notes rather than rolls. The tuning is gDGCD.

Notes: This tune came to me from the Great Universal Oneness. Translation: I was noodling around, and it emerged from the noodling. I wanted to explore the relation between the Bb and D chords, and you can judge how it turned out. It is played out of the G tuning with the capo up 2 frets to the key of A, to make it easier on the guitarist. Incidentally Broad River is near Boiling Springs, North Carolina, where Earl Scruggs came from.

Notes: Capo 2. This is a basic Scruggs version of the frailing style heard on the 'Cherish the Ladies' CD. It is the same song sung by Andy Stewart as noted below:
http://www.chivalry.com/cantaria/lyrics/broom-cowdenknowes.html
Notes from Andy M. Stewart:
This song is easily traceable back to the early seventeenth century where it appears in a small collection as "The Lovely Northerne Lass." Allan Ramsay also published a version in his "Tea Table Miscellany", during the 1720s. It is a moving tale of love, banishment and exile, supported by a very beautiful melody. Cowdenknowes is in Berwickshire, near to the village of Earlston, a place much associated with the 13th century poet and prophet, "Thomas The Rhymer". I got this song years ago, from my friend and neighbour, Archie Fisher.
This example of "The Broom of the Cowdenknowes" is performed by Andy M. Stewart with Silly Wizard on the albums Wild and Beautiful and The Best of Silly Wizard, both available from the Chivalry Music store

It is also an excellent tune for the banjo and has been recorded by several artists: Buck White of course, with banjo by Jack Hicks; Larry Cordle, with banjo by Dave Talbot from Ontari-ari-ari-o; and Jeff White, with banjo by Charlie Cushman. My version of Buck’s Run includes influences from each of these banjo pickers, as well as a wonderful fiddle break by Kenny Baker (ah, Kenny Baker …). It is played in the key of A.

Notes: Used a tab on here to convert to G tuning with the D tuned down to a C used by the band in the video. Added Bass tab ( have no idea how to do the guitar and mandolin). Experimented some to try to get the tab of the braying mule and the alternating walkup measures to sound like Douglas' version. Also used repeated measures to try to keep pace with Rod's comic delay...to be able to play along somewhat with the video. No guarantee of accuracy, but it kinda works.
If you have corrections send them to me...I'll fix it.

Notes: Here is a Celtic fingerstyle setting using Double D tuning (Double C-Capo II) for the Old Time reel that goes under interchangeable titles. The titles create confusion since there are two main branches in Old Time and further regional, local and bluegrass variants. The A Part is pretty close in most versions with one noticeable variation – either dipping down to an A-note or rising up to F# in the second and sixth measures. (Here I dip down to the A-note in the sixth measure.) This variation is found in both Old Time and Bluegrass versions and a G chord is sometimes played in these spots (as I do here). It’s in the B Part (fifth and sixth measures) where the melodic contour branches in one of two directions – either dipping down from the fifth (A) to the tonic (D)/D chord, or, as Paul Warren played it (New Five Cents), using a G-note double-stop with a B-note)/G chord, then up to an A-note/A chord and moving upwards happily in major second intervals. Many (but not all) Old Time versions (‘New Five Cents’, ‘Ruffled Drawers’ or ‘Buffalo Nickel’) tend to keep dipping down to the low D-note/D chord and use fewer chords than Bluegrass versions which are based on Paul Warren’s version. This setting uses a lot of fretting-hand ornamentation and makes for a lovely hornpipe.

Notes: Transcribed from Earl's rendition on Foggy Mountain Banjo. It's not exact, but I think it's extremely close. Includes solos and backup. I set the metronome pretty slow so I can play along. To play at Earl's speed, set the Tabledit tempo (CTRL-K or CMD-K) to 288.

Russ takes the Scruggs vocabulary we know and love and keeps it fresh and exciting with clever syncopation and wonderful delivery!
Don't take the annotations on the tab to seriously - while it helps to bend the 2-3 slides and make certain parts real greasy, I really just put em' in for a little fun.
Enjoy!

Notes: The oldest Irish versions of this tune are in G Dorian (two parts), with even older Scottish versions under different names. Many two-part versions are in G Mixolydian and are very close to 'Paddy on the Turnpike'. This version is fairly contemporary, similar to Eileen Ivers', John Carty's and Matt Cranitch's fiddle versions, all of which have three parts. This version has a little more "D-ness" to it thanks to Eileen's version. (I would not call this 'Paddy on the Turnpike', which only has two parts. I have other three-part Celtic fingerstyle versions of this tune with more "F-ness" to them.)

Notes: This is a clawhammer-played backing track for "Burden in My Hand" as performed by Soundgarden. I was interested in learning to play and sing a song that was never meant for banjo in a clawhammer style, and this is what I came up with! It seemed appropriate considering the recent passing of Chris Cornell. Many thanks to whomever published the chord structure on www.songsterr.com. I found this version to be very well done and it gave me a great starting point. I also want to thank Mike Iverson for his excellent website banjoutah.com, where I found the fingerings for the chords in Gm tuning.
This is my very first tab of any kind, so comments and critiques are welcome. I invite any interested players to make improvements, add licks and even change styles to Scruggs or other as the notion takes you. I have included chord diagrams to facilitate further creativity.

Notes: According to thesession.org, this tune comes from the mid 1700s when England was actively stomping out the culture of the Scottish Highlands. Sheet music is available at http://thesession.org/tunes/
According to http://www.nigelgatherer.com/whistle/tut_8/8-4.html:
"The English general Cumberland received the sobriquet 'Butcher' after the defeat of the Jacobite forces of Bonnie Prince Charlie at Culloden in 1746, such was the savagery of his reprisals and cruelty toward prisoners of the engagement. In the aftermath of the rising a series of laws were passed which aimed to suppress the Highland culture and break forever the power of the ancient clans in order to prevent any such rebellion from again happening. Thus, highland dress and the wearing of clan tartan was prohibited on pain of death, arms were banned, and, attesting to the power of traditional music to evoke emotion, pipers were outlawed. In fact, reports Williamson, the kilt continued to be prohibited until 1782, forcing the Highlanders to wear trews. Any clergyman who did not pray in church expressly for George of Hanover could be transported for life, and those who attended such services were liable to fine and imprisonment. This was in force till 1792. The Burning of the Piper's Hut probably refers to these times."
