I"m kind of confused. So when I put a capo on the fifth fret...that means that the first string and fifth string are exactly the same note...am I understanding this correctly or am I supposed to retune or have some special capo?

sorry, I'm just now reading this post. When you capo up 5 frets you need to capo the 5th string up 5 frets also. This is usually done with a sliding 5th string capo or spikes installed in you fingerboard.
