Notes: "The story of my old rooster" by Yvon Mimeault from his CD "Y'etait temps". This is a Quebecois tune that is played often in the Olympia session. According to the story, when Yvon was young he walked across the farmyard and was attacked by the old rooster. Yvon, with injured leg and pride, pulls out his sling-shot and faces the rooster. As the beast turns its head sideways to look him in the eye — roosters turn sideways for a face to face — Yvon takes a shot. The bird, hit in the head, falls to the ground. Yvon, after making sure nobody saw him, leans it against a fence where he can discretely keep an eye on it. After a while, the rooster, who was only knocked out, gets up and staggers back to the henhouse, to the relief of Yvon. The next morning, as usual, the old rooster hopped on a fence to wake up the whole farm, but he was now singing out of tune.

Notes: Got a request from a French customer of mine (he lives in France and bought all 4 of my Banjo Tab books) to tab out the French National Anthem in Scruggs style. Well, here it is. Straight ahead arrangement - shouldn't prove too difficult for the Intermediate player. Watch the chords in bars 16 and 18 Gm and Eb. If you hold the chord shapes down in each bar as you roll through them it should help.

Notes: This is a Québécois tune, written in the 1930s by Joe Bouchard [no - not the Blue Oyster Cult bassist, but a Joséph Bouchard, of Quebec] that I thought could benefit from a banjo arrangement. I originally thought it was a Cajun tune, as I first heard it by Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys on their fantastic album "Trace of Time". This arrangement is a transcription (more or less) of Dave Greeley's 1st fiddle solo from that recording. It's not terrifically easy but is attainable - and it sounds great when you get it up and running! Have fun.

Notes: I have dusted off my tablature of Lady of Spain, which I worked out some decades ago. Note that my arrangement opens and closes with a vamp pattern. Lady of Spain is a standard number on the accordion – I’m talking to you, Lawrence Welk -- and it just sounded more complete to me with a cheesy intro and exit. Note also that the V chord -- i.e., G -- progresses to a G augmented. If you're going to go cheesy you might as well go whole hog (if I might mix metaphors). So put on your dancing shoes, strap on the old accordion, and everybody polka.

Notes: Lake Erie is a less common fiddle tune published in Elias Howe’s Musical Companion, The Third Part, 1842. The tune probably falls into the general category of northern tunes, and the playing style is clawhammer with a small amount of double-thumbing on the inside strings.
This is my first tab post on this forum so I don't know the routine. Nevertheless, I am including the fiddle tune in parallel so the player who reads notes can actually see what they're aiming for. The arrangement is deliberately sparse and I would add quite a bit more rhythmic banjo noise in actual practice. In a few cases I added a note or two in the arrangement to make the tune more banjo-friendly.

Notes: This is a nice 6/8 jig for clawhammer, as played by Noah Cline.
The triangle ? in the tab indicates a clawhammer down stroke with the preferable clawhammer finger (index or middle finger). There are six 1/8 notes in the measure and the clawhammer strokes are on the 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 6th notes. It requires a little other rhythm than the usual clawhammer bum-pa-di-ty rhythm in 4/4 or 2/4.

Notes: Also known as "Leather Britches," this is a great jam tune. I love the pinches in Part A, because they give it extra drive. Perhaps the only tricky bit is found in measures 10 and 26, and I have indicated the right-hand picking pattern, which involves playing the 2nd string with the thumb and then crossing over and playing the 3rd string with the index finger, a pattern than Alan Munde occasionally uses (at least to my ear) to good effect.

Notes: This is a straightforward melodic version of Liberty — including harmonics — that is relatively easy to play. I quickly worked it up after hearing friends play a twin-fiddle arrangement. Note that it is in the key of D but played in standard G tuning.

Notes: This song is played melodic style in the key of "D" in standard "G" tuning but with the 5th string lowered one fret to F#. This makes it easy to play and very flowing melodic style by not repeating the same string. This tuning works for many songs played melodic style in "D". I haven't seen this tuning here so I am posting several for examples.

Notes: Yes, it's Limehouse Blues (a jazz tune) and it's in Ab (without a capo), but this is a bluegrass version complete with some standard Reno variations. Has a bluegrass guitar rhythm track & a bass rhythm track. The rolling parts aren't that hard, actually, but the single string can be a little tricky. The double stops are played by brushing down on the strings with your thumb.

Notes: Stuff that might make this tune more difficult: Besides the syncopations, there are open-string pull-offs in measures 8, 9, 10, and 17.
Big Scioty, which commemorates the Scioto River, is one of my favorite tunes, made especially special since it runs through Columbus, Ohio where I used to live. At some point, I decided that the Olentangy, the smaller of the Columbus' two rivers (they join near downtown) deserved its own tune, so I made up this one, Little Olentangy (Composed on the fiddle by Chuck Levy © 2006, arranged for the banjo © 2012). According to Wikipedia, the river now known as the Olentangy was originally known as the "Keenhongsheconsepung" which literally translated as "stone for your knife stream" based on the shale found along its shore. Early settlers translated this to "Whetsone River". In 1833, the Ohio General assembly passed legislation intending to restore the original native American names to some Ohio waterways, but mistakenly gave Whetstone River the name "Olentangy", Delaware for "river of red face paint" which had actually belonged to the river that is now known as Big Darby Creek. Little Olentangy appears on Scratching and Clawing, my first CD, on Red Dog Records, 2006.
I am playing clawhammer style, on a Bart Reiter banjo. The pot is an old Vega Tubaphone, with a new 5-string neck.

Notes: Little Rabbit is in the same family as John Brown's Dream (for example Tommy Jarrell) and Jimmie Johnson (as Dwight Diller prefers to call the tune). This version is based on an old recording by Crockett's Kentucky Mountaineers. This is an advanced version with Galax lick and drop thumb.

Notes: Little Rabbit is in the same family as John Brown's Dream (for example Tommy Jarrell) and Jimmie Johnson (as Dwight Diller prefers to call the tune). This version is based on an old recording by Crockett's Kentucky Mountaineers. This is an easy beginner version based on simple "bum-di-ty" pattern and some hammering-on and pull-offs. The tuning is aEAC#E or standard G tuning gDGBD with capo on 2nd fret (and fifth string tuned up to a or spiked/capoed at the 7th fret).

Notes: I first heard SilasBanjo play this on You Tube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlDuk5NLprQ) and fell in love with it (It's been my ringtone ever since!) I went in search of a TAB to help me learn it and eventually pieced together a version, just ever-so slightly different from his wonderful version.
It evolves each time I play it, but it's very catchy. This is my latest incarnation (but one - changed the b-part to be more like the Silas one). I believe the original writer to be Michael Fox, but correct me if I'm wrong!

Notes: Here is a nifty break by Bill Keith, from the Keith and Rooney album of the same name. When I first heard it, in 1963 or 1964, I was quite impressed. It is simple and elegant, and it contains some novel ideas (for the time). Keith and Rooney played it in A#/Bb, and I have tabbed it in that key.

Notes: This instrumental was created by Pete Seeger on the 12 string guitar. My banjo arrangement was cobbled together from Seeger's version, Leo Kottke's and other YouTube versions. I first wrote it in music notation, then created tabs for the banjo mostly in Melodic style. I used Musescore 4 which is a free app for Windows, Mac and Linux. I'm not sure what I'm able to upload as this is my first time uploading. If this fails, I am at DonBrunetti1943@Gmail.Com (put "Seeger LC" in the subject line and I'll send you the relevant file via your email address).

Notes: This is from the famous front porch tape Steve Arkin and Bill Keith made of Bobby Thompson’s playing in 1964. The quality of the recording is low, and I could not always clearly hear what Thompson was playing. So take it FWIW. Liza Jane must at one time have been a popular name, resulting in at least 3 songs or tunes in country music. There is Ole Liza Jane, which Merle Travis recorded as a nonsense song and Don Stover recorded as a lovely banjo tune (https://www.banjohangout.org/tab/browse.asp?m=detail&v=26264). There is also Goodbye Liza Jane, which I associate with Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys (https://www.banjohangout.org/tab/browse.asp?m=detail&v=27278). And then there is Bobby Thompson’s version, which seems to exist in a Universe all its own.

Notes: The Osborne Brothers recorded Lonesome Feeling in the 1960s. On youtube you can find excellent versions that are more recent, such as those by Josh Williams, Dean Osborne, and the the 2018 IBMA All-Star Jam. The latter features an outstanding lead vocal by Nick Dumas and impressive banjo work by Justin Moses. My tablature contains 2 breaks, the first the way I tend to play it and the second an approximation of Justin Moses’s break. I found it difficult to hear and decipher parts of Moses’s break; so navigate it at your peril.

Notes: The smash hit Argentinian "rola" about drinking to forget a lost love, and only making yourself sadder. If I had to pick only one song to sum up the genre of "Rock en Español" in the 1990s, it would be this classic. This song is incredibly popular to cover on the guitar because it's a very simple strumming pattern and very fun to sing along to. (If you've never closed out a bar at 4:30am with the entire crowd singing 'Y YO ESTOY AQUI/BORRACHO Y LOCO', you're missing out). Naturally, I wanted to make a banjo version, but I got a bit carried away and while this starts as a laid-back rock song, the banjo line quickly becomes Scruggs-style bluegrass. I've included the "unaltered melody" as a muted track in the GP5 version so you can see how much extra stuff I threw in there and take out whatever you don't want to keep.

Notes: The tab is based on Jason Romero's playing in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQLVx7pbZgc The tuning is gEADE (or fDGCD with the capo at the 2nd fret). I have made some edits and added chords as of 12-17-2023.

Notes: Their version of Love and Wealth is one of my favorite songs by Flatt and Scruggs. They did not release a studio recording on the song, but a recording of a live radio broadcast from the early 1950s is available on the bootleg LP “Kings of Bluegrass, Vol. 2.” (The LP’s liner notes are from Ben Dover, which happens to be the name of a character in Chevy Chase’s “Fletch” movie). In contrast, J. D. Crowe produced a studio recording of the song on the recent album “Crowe and Wasson.” It is instructive to compare the versions by these two masters. They are generally similar, with some notable exceptions: Compare Scruggs’s nifty C passage in measure 4 to Crowe’s more conventional C passage in measure 21. Scruggs handles the A to D transition in measure 15 in an unconventional way, with only 2 notes, whereas Crowe carefully plays the melody in measure 32. Scruggs played the song in the key of B, and Crowe's is in the key of A. The tablature is in G.

Notes: Here are two of my breaks to Love Come Home, both including some moderately difficult licks. Pay particular attention to the C and D chords, several of which I borrowed from recordings by other players. I have labelled the sources of the licks that I borrowed. Note also that the trick in the first IV (C) chord of the second break is to emphasize the alternation between the first string 2nd fret and first string open -- this alternation is the effect I am trying to achieve. I highlighted this in the MIDI by selecting "ringing note" for those notes.

Notes: This is the title song from the children marionette theatre play "Jim Knopf & Lukas, der Lokomotivführer" ("Jim Button & Luke the Engine Driver, see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpSlht21WI4) arranged in the melodic style. I arranged this tune for several reasons: I loved to watch the series when I was a child, my daughter loves to watch it now and I have been playing some melodic style material for some time now so I decided I could arrange this tune as an exercise. Massive public demand for an arrangement of this tune certainly was not the reason... ;)

Notes: A video of me playing this rendition is posted on my YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/VR0YAZR_N4E
Note that in the video I am playing a minstrel banjo and even though it is in the relative Double C tuning, the banjo is pitched down 5 half steps even, making it a Double G tuning.
