Notes: My 4yo daughter has one of those electric mini pianos. I wanted to impress her a bit with my playing and also to practice some transcription skills and thus decided to arrange her favourite preset tune for banjo. It seemed perfect for some melodic banjo as it clearly seemed to be a fiddle melody. It also seemed so familiar but I didn't know the name. I asked a colleague who is a first violinist for a symphony orchestra and he thought it was a Scottish dance but didn't know the name either. Try googling a melody... Anyway, I eventually found out that the tune was called "Sailor's Hornpipe" or "The College Hornpipe" and in fact is a very popular fiddle tune. I guess I should feel stupid for not knowing...

Notes: This is a traditional Finnish polka that I transcribed from the playing of a 10 year old Finnish accordionist on YouTube (traditionally this tune is played in Cm/Fm, but to fit well within the range of the banjo I have dropped the pitch by a minor third to Am/Dm) This is a great tune, with very easy guitar chords. The banjo is tuned to G minor tuning [GDGBbD] and played with the capo on the second fret. The first three parts are in A minor and the fourth part is in D minor. Have fun!!

Notes: Cathy Moore's web site, Banjo Meets World, offered tunes from other cultures done clawhammer style. "Säkkijärven Polkka" from Sweden has four parts and offers lots of left-hand work (pull-offs and hammer-ons) as well as drop thumb.
This tune uses the tuning gEGBE, though she tunes to gDFAD and adds the capo to the 2nd fret while leaving the 5th string unchanged. Her web site is no longer updated, but you can view the videos and tips here: https://banjomeetsworld.wordpress.com/ She also provided useful tips for adding drive and syncopation to traditional old-time tunes.

Notes: My transcription of how Earl Scruggs plays this fiddle-tune on "Foggy Mountain Banjo". This tab differs enough from the transcription in Earl Scruggs' book not be an infringement of copyrighted material. Especially, in the book the 1st downbeat starts on the 5th note, in my transcription on the 9th note (1st note 3rd measure), giving the feel as if the whole song is shifted 1/2 measure, that is really the magic of this tune. Also, it has the advantage that the B part UTN (12th fret position) starts on the downbeat of a measure, not halfway through a measure, as it is transcribed in the book.
(with minor review for easier playing the DTN part)

Notes: Aren't the lyrics to that other tune, "Sally in the garden, sifting sand"? Either someone had a sense of humour changing that to "assisting Sam", or some hearing problems. I suspect it's the former. My source for this is "The Old-Time Fiddler's Repertory", - 245 Traditional Tunes, Compiled and edited by R.P.Christeson. This is mountain minor tuning capoed up two frets to match the fiddle. It's a departure for me since I normally arrange Irish tunes so I can play them at sessions, but I love old-timey music too. I don't think I had to change much for the banjo other than notate in cut-time instead of 2/4. Oh, and here is a cool link with the fiddler playing the tune. http://slippery-hill.com/RP/008-Sally.mp3
Cheers!

A friend of mine from YouTube asked how I would arrange this tune. This is pretty much the way I've always played it. Tony Trischka's Banjoland album was my first exposure to this Monroe instrumental, and as a kid, I tried to play it just like he did. Of course it evolved over time.

Notes: My version of Salty Dog comprises two breaks, each with two parts. The first break is in pretty straight Scruggs style, with a down-the-neck and then an up-the-neck segment. The second break starts with a semi-melodic segment reminiscent of Allen Shelton's wonderful break on the recording of the song by Jim and Jesse, and the second segment incorporates elements (but is not a faithful copy) of Bill Keith's jaw-dropping break on his album "Living on the Mountain" with Jim Rooney, released in 1964 or thereabouts. If you haven't heard the album, you should grab a copy to hear marvelous banjoistics by a young Bill Keith. As to the melody of Salty Dog, you might ask what a C note is doing in an E chord. Perhaps the simplest answer is to think of E augmented. As to the perennial question "What is a salty dog anyway?", I will stay out of this one. Either it's a soft drink, or it's a pickled sausage, or it's something else altogether.

Notes: This is a tune I wrote several years ago which was inspired by a musical phrase (a "lick") I heard on one of Sam Bush's albums. It's amazing what a lick can inspire. So I named the tune after Sam. It's a fun tune to play so I thought I'd throw it out there for whoever might be interested. I hope you enjoy :)

Notes: San Antonio Rose is a classic western swing tune that works well as a bluegrass instrumental. After listening again to Bob Wills's recording, I discovered that the tab I posted in 2020 had omitted a subtle part of the melody, the part with the words "It was there I found, beside the Alamo, enchantment strange as the blue up above." Thus I have added it to the tablature as Part B.

Notes: Bela Fleck's 1988 album "Drive" for me personally was a seminal moment in trying to learn banjo. I had never before heard a banjo do what Bela was doing, how he was approaching and utilizing the banjo in original compositions. Every tune on that album is a masterpiece in my opinion and certainly changed my view of what a banjo is capable of ... not that I could ever hope to achieve that level of musicianship, but definitely opened my mind and ears on what banjo can do beyond lead and backup ... So this is my half-fast attempt at this masterpiece, something I'll never perform publicly or in any gig but is fun to absorb nevertheless. It is a very cool tune. I greatly enjoyed trying my hand at it and creating the tablature, and I hope you enjoy it much as I have. ***** I have created a YouTube video where I layered three banjos, just having fun with the tune, but it will give you an idea of how the tablature sounds for the lead banjo part ... Notes: Sandy Boys is a great old-timey tune associated with the playing of a renowned fiddler from West Virginia, Edden Hammons. But its origins are probably in the minstrel shows of the 19th century. I became familiar with the tune from a tab that Don Borchelt posted on his web page (http://www.banjr.com/tablatures.htm) some time ago, and I have since encountered it in jams. The version I have posted here is very much for the bluegrass banjo, with both Scruggs-ish and melodic elements.

Notes: This is fairly close to Bill Keith's rendition of the tune, recorded with Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys in 1963. It is played at a nice moderate tempo, not too rushed. Neil Rosenberg and Charles Wolfe's discography of Monroe states that Monroe learned a version of the tune from an old-time fiddler who lived in southern Indiana/northern Kentucky. It is close to the tune "I Don't Love Nobody," and you can find versions of the latter in the BHO tab archive.

Notes: I always teach Santa Claus around this time of year, even though the tune has nothing to do with the season - it's named after the town of Santa Claus, Indiana. One of my students expressed an interest in doing an octave break, and I had a lot of fun putting this together with him. My goal was to keep the melody of the tune and the feel of Bill Keith's classic break, just an octave higher.
The arrangement turns out to be a great lesson in mixing notes fretted on high frets of low strings with open string notes on the first and second strings. The open notes, besides being integral to the melody, also give the player time to move from one left hand position to the next.
Since the whole break takes place above the seventh fret, even radical left hand movements aren't actually that big, so the arrangement is easier to play than it first seems. Some of the left hand positions are unusual and fun to play. My favorites are the beginning of the B part, from measure 17 through 19, and the descending D chord arpeggio in measure 9. The melody notes are highlighted in the tab, so you can focus on those, but listen to the tab before you start playing it to get a good idea of how the melody pops out of these unusual left hand positions and right hand rolls. I offer this break in the spirit of Bill Keith. I hope he'd like it.
If you're familiar with my Mel Bay book, "Bluegrass Banjo from All Sides", this tune falls between level B and level C. I consider it an advanced intermediate arrangement, but if you're comfortable with melodic licks up the neck - or even if you aren't - give it a try. Merry Christmas!

SRP is the name of a highway in New York State, and it was mentioned in the Nero Wolfe mysteries written by the great Rex Stout, a series I still read avidly. You may find, as I do, that the descending double stops that constitute the B part of the first break are useful in backup. A recording of SRP from a practice tape is available on the media tab of my BHO webpage.

Notes: This tab is a supplement to my YouTube video, "The Modal Versatility of the Double C tuning" (https://youtu.be/ZozqXWiy_lU). It shows scales for the Ionian (major), Mixolydian, Dorian, and Aeolian (minor) modes in the key of C, as played in the Double C tuning. Each scale starts on the open 4th strong (low C) and moves through two octaves, across all four strings, up to the 10th fret of the 1st string (high C). The modes are arranged to show how the scale is modified from each proceeding scale (a down-pointing arrow indicates how a fret position is changed from one mode to another (e.g. the C mixolydian scale is produced by flattening the 7th note of the C major scale).

Notes: A guitar player friend of mine plays Shady Grove in Dm. I had worked out a version in Em that is similar to others posted here and had started working on a high break. I had an "Ah, hah!" moment when I realized that my high break used no open strings and didn't involve the 5th string. This arrangement, while pretty simple is totally moveable up and down the neck so you can play in Am, Bm, Cm, Dm, Em, etc. It's in Tabledit and pdf. I sometimes do a hammer-on as opposed to a slide for the first measure as it bluegrasses it up a bit. If that's too hard just start on 3rd string 7 fret.

Notes: This is not the version of Shady Grove in a minor key that might be played by a folk singer with a dulcimer – not that there’s anything wrong with that! Instead this is the bare-bones hard-driving bluegrass version in a major key, as played by, among others, Bill Monroe (on the CD “Bluegrass Masters, from the Newport Festivals”), Flatt and Scruggs (on vol. 9 of the DVD “Flatt and Scruggs TV Shows”), and Doyle Lawson (on the eponymously titled CD “Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver”). I have tabbed 2 breaks, with lots of improvisation in the breaks, including a Fleck-ism at the end of the second break.

Notes: I was introduced to Wade Ward's masterful banjo playing on John Cohen's album High Atmosphere. The collection features an amazing cast of ballad singers and banjo pickers from Virginia and North Carolina. As a teenager, I learned my first two banjo pieces off of it. The first was Fred Cockerham's "Fortune," and the second tune was Wade Ward's "Shady Grove." Scroll down just a little bit more to listen to the latter. I highly recommend checking out the entire album, it's brilliant!
Benjamin Wade Ward was born near Saddle Creek, Virginia on October 15, 1892. His parents both came from the area around Independence, Virginia. When Wade was ten, his father purchased a farm overlooking the Peachbottom Creek meadows, and moved the family there. Wade lived out his life on that farm. He died there, on his porch, at the age of 79 on May 29, 1971.
Wade Ward's musical journey started on the banjo when he was eleven, and he added the fiddle at the age of sixteen. His father, Enoch, played fiddle, and his mother, Rosomund, was a ballad singer. Wade learned fiddle and banjo from his older brother, David Crockett Ward, who was twenty years his senior. The two brothers made a lot of music together, playing square dances at weddings, corn shuckings, and house raisings. Wade played with the Buck Mountain Band and the Grayson County Bog Trotters at public land sales, local Republican party meetings, Moose Lodge functions, and on the radio. Over the years, he also made music with his nephew (and Crockett's son) Fields Ward, as well as Uncle Charlie Higgins, Dale Poe, members of the legendary Lundy family, and Glen Smith.

Notes: This is the first 16 bars (of 88) of the Arrival of the Queen of Sheba. It is written in Bb so you have to capo up 3 frets. On the last 6 notes of bar 4 is where the oboe comes in so you may want to experiment with this (up the neck or chord it). Also bar 11 should start off from D but I've worked around that. If you want to play the original you'll have to scrap the capo and play Bb (but keep the 5th string Bb). Good luck if you want to learn the rest. It is very long but I am working on the next bit and may post this soon. The idea is to keep it simple and easy to learn.

Notes: Also known as "Shenandoah Valley Breakdown," this is a classic instrumental by Bill Monroe. He recorded it with Bill Keith on banjo in 1963, the version most of us are familiar with. However, there is a radio tape of Monroe playing on the Opry Jamboree from December 1958, with Joe Drumright on banjo, and rumor has it that Monroe had to phone Drumright to play it over the phone to teach it to Keith just before they recorded it in 63. A concert tape from 1977 of the Blue Grass Boys with Bill Holden playing a marvelous version on banjo is also floating around. (Apparently by then Monroe had discarded his dictum that there can be only one guy named Bill in the BGB). My arrangement comprises three breaks and incorporates elements from these different players. The first break is loosely based on Bill Keith's recorded version with Monroe. The second break is a nifty melodic arrangement that is my version of the way Bill Holden played it. The third break is from a 1981 concert recording of Bill Keith, in which he introduced another outstanding take on the tune. Capo up 2 and play it in A.

Lyrics:
Short life of trouble
A few more words to part
Short life of trouble, dear girl
For a boy with a broken heart
Remember what you promised
Not more than a week ago
You promised that you'd marry me
Standing in your mama's door
* Refrain
Now you've gone and left me
I don't know what I'll do
I'd give this world and half of my life
Just to be married to you
* Refrain
Now you've broken your promise
Go marry whom you may
In this old world so big and so wide
I'll ramble back some day
* Refrain
My right foot's on the platform
My left foot's on the train
I'm leaving you and this lonesome old town
To never return again

Notes: This is an easy version of Shouting in Jerusalem. Mike Seeger plays this on his True Vine album and he based hes playing on Josh Thomas. Mike plays on a gourd banjo tuned down to three steps to E: eBEG#B. I think Josh Thomas paled a resonator banjo in standard G tuning. This is a simple arrangement, to some part based on Mike Seeger, but to most part my own ideas how to play a simpified Shouting In Jerusalem.

Matthew learned it from my tab and nearly had it down, but finished school and went off to University ... what a blow.

Notes: Here's the Yale Women's Slavic Chorus singing this at the Parents' Weekend concert in the fall of 2010. I was "there" for this, but as we were running late, I dropped off Madame and spent the next 45 minutes driving around New Haven looking for a parking spot, then running around campus asking for directions, finally dashing up just as everyone was leaving!

Notes: This is the version of "Silver Bell" played by Bela Fleck on the album "Fiddle Tunes for Banjo".
It is just the banjo part. There is a low first solo and then right into the 'up the neck' break and then back down to a slight variation of the first part again, and then a quick tag ending.
Be sure to listen to the recording to get the tempo, chords and the overall feel of the song in the proper context.

Notes: This is an attempt to get some West Indian rhythms into the old tune Sloop John B.
The first part shows a strumming pattern
1 Brush down with hand
2 Brush down with thumb
3 Brush up with index
4 Brush down with hand
5 Brush down with thumb
6 Brush up with index
7 Brush down with hand
8 Brush up with index
If there is eight 1/8 notes in a measure the brush down with hand is emphasized or the 1, 4 and 7 note.
The second part is a kind of clawhammer, also giving the emphasizing on 1, 4 and 7 note. A lot of drop thumb is involved and the drop thumb on note 4 should be loud.

Notes: This is a genuine "Tin Pan Alley" tune from 1913 by Percy Wenrich (pronounced WIN-rick) that works really well on the banjo. The II chord (A) provides a little spice in the A part, and the thumb gets more than the usual workout in the B part. I learned it in 1981 and I'm still partial to it. Warning: You'll like it better if you don't know the hokey words . . .

Notes: This is a melodic version in the key of "D" played in open "G" tuning but with the 5th string tuned down one fret to F#. This makes the fingering easy and helps from repeating the same string for more flowing melodic. I haven't seen this tuning here before so I am posting several of my song arrangements for melodic players to experiment. A mostly standard version just to highlight the tuning which I think you will like.

Notes: Here is a lovely straightforward version of the tune, played by the guy who wrote it, the noted songwriter Earl Scruggs. It is way less ornate than J. D. Crowe's versions (posted on BHO as well), and provides a nice contrast to J. D.'s take on the tune. If you want to learn to play Somehow Tonight, I suggest that you start with Earl's version and then move on to J. D.'s.

Notes: In my continuing quest to understand the genius of J. D. Crowe, I have tabbed two versions of one of his signature tunes, “Somehow Tonight,” written by Earl Scruggs – and who knew that the Scruggsmeister is a wordsmith? The first break is from Crowe’s recording with the Bluegrass Album Band (BGAB), the version most of us are familiar with. Note Crowe’s repeated use of multiple thumb strokes on the fourth string, a cardinal feature of his blues style. The second and third breaks are from Frank Godbey’s legendary recording of the New South at the Red Slipper Lounge of the Holiday Inn, Lexington KY, November 1974. I really prefer Crowe’s attack on this version of the tune. Note how his second break from 1974 ends with a blues riff that goes off in the ozone. I am not sure that I got it completely right, but it’s reasonably close.

Notes: Second String D-Tuner:
High Stop: "C" Note
Lower Stop: "B" Note
Between the first break and the second break, you must quickly tune the second string down from a "C" note to a "B" note and leave it there for the duration of the second break.
After the second break, quickly tune the second string from the "B" note back up to the "C" note.
Because I could not figure out how to put all banjo breaks on one module, they are split between breaks. All breaks should be played by one banjo and see notes in the tab to understand how to play the song.

Notes: Here is a bluegrass arrangement of “Over the Rainbow,” often referred to as “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” I play it in the key of C, standard G tuning, although some versions I have heard (e.g., Eddie Shelton’s) are in the key of G. But I think C works better on the banjo. I am aware that there are alternate chord structures for this tune, particularly for the B part. This version works for me, but your mileage may vary, and feel free to come up with your own arrangement.

Notes: The source of this tune is "Old Time Kentucky Fiddle Tunes" by Jeff Todd Titon, number 154. This tune is clearly derived from Green Fields of America, but it has it's own charm too. It's a little crooked - for example 6 measures in the b-part) I've presented a bare-bones arrangement here that is pretty close to the fiddle transcription.(you should of course ornament to your taste) Exceptions are, there appears to be a typo in the last measure of the A part with a figure reproduced, that I removed, and I changed a double low "e" to an "e" plus high-g-drone, and I also found it fun to slide from the low e to the g instead of try some manoeuvre like an overly long reaching hammer-on, or an m-arpeggio. For the quarter notes in the first full measure, you can simply add the high-g drone, or you can actually play the notes as in Greenfields of America. Lot's of fun to play, cheers.

Notes: I couldn't find a clawhammer version of South Australia so between knowing the chords and finding the melody somewhere online in the key of C, I came up with this in D. Note that you should tune the 5th string to A for this to sound right. It's largely based around the melody and I'm pretty much a straight novice but the second half, or "Rolling king" part, is fun to play and I'm quite proud of it. I may re-upload once I figure out how to add lyrics in TablEdit. I welcome any and all questions, complaints, suggestions, comments, etc.

Notes: Tuning is actually adaad instead of adf#ad, I could not click that option. The tab is the southern soldier. A civil war song from the south. Best preformed by the Second South Carolina String Band (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUajwtw2Esc) check them out they are awesome. This tab is only the melody notes, so that i and other folks who are interested can adapt it to whatever style you like, I am trying to adapt it to scruggs style. Ive recreated this in tabledit based of the video and I also used a clawhammer tab(https://jamalongtranscriptions.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/transcription-The-Southern-Soldier-clawhammer-banjo.pdf) which I recently found, I wouldn't have got it without that tab cause im only a few months into playing. Some folks might get upset by the lyrics or the fact that it was a confederate song, but for me that doesn't take away at all from this beatiful song, and i hope y'all can enjoy it just as a piece of music :)

Notes: "Spider Home" is a tune from the folk punk group O'Death. This tab attempts to approximate the banjo backup on the recording. The slam-jam nature of punk music presents a challenge for the tab writer. I have indicated the fingering for the intro and first part which are played at a moderate tempo. In the sections after that, I just indicate the 3-note chord positions and leave it to the user to determine whether to strum, pick 2- or 3-note arpeggios, or both. The tab is based on this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cb7Ff3x0ncE . I used Chordify for suggested chords - https://chordify.net/chords/o-death-songs/spider-home-chords . The user is encouraged to find their own path as banjo support for this song.

Here is my arrangement of this old fiddle tune which is not very popular amongst Scruggs style banjo players. This is probably due to the fact that it's a bit tricky to play. The harmonic structure over the A chords implies an Em tonality which creates an interesting tension.

Notes: Here is a tune that has stuck with me for over ten years now, and is a staple for me when I play at Old folks homes and such. On the fiddle I treat it as a ballad style, and on the Tenor Banjo more of a dance tune. I have heard many Irish bands play this tune at "sub-light speed", and then again have heard fiddlers play it quite slowly and sweetly. Hope you enjoy AJ

Notes: This is one of my favorite traditional Irish tunes to play on the Irish tenor banjo and mandolin. I decided to create a simple melodic style arrangement of the song for five string players. The tune is played in both 6/8 and 4/4 (a particularly good version by The High Kings even switches between the two) so I included both a 6/8 and a 4/4 version. Note that both versions use the exact same notes. Only the note duration varies between the two.

Notes: I play this great John Hartford song with my band "The Grass Snakes" and this is a fairly accurate transcription of what I play. There's nothing very tricky here - a little bit of syncopation in the b part, but it's all quite attainable, with a bit of practice. A favourite song at my gigs and I hope you enjoy learning it!

Notes: Here are the takes on this classic Bill Monroe tune by two great banjo players, Noam Pikelny and Bill Keith. Pikelny's version is from the album "Noam Pikelny Plays Kenny Baker Plays Bill Monroe," and it is faithful to Baker's version on fiddle. I have included two of his interesting variations on the B part that mirror Monroe's composition. Keith's version is from "The Grass is Greener," and it is less tied to the fiddle break. It's more interpretive, if not downright surreal. Capo up 2 to play in A.

Notes: SMT is a lovely tune employing Keith/Scruggs tuners. Walter Hensley wrote it and recorded it as Stoney Mountain Twist and Walt's Breakdown, and more recently J. D. Crowe recorded it as Stony (sic) Mountain Twist. The tab I have posted is more or less my own arrangement, not faithful to either Hensley's or Crowe's. For Part C, where you crank up your Keith tuners (twisters), I have tabbed it to show the melody notes without tuners, but I added the protocol for using Keith tuners above the tab. So you can still play it if you do not have Keith tuners, although it sounds much better with the tuners. (It was a real bear to get the timing accurate on Part C, by the way).

Based on David Eugene Edwards' solo performance found on youtube (link in tab).
He plays a "thumb lead" style with index on bright D string and thumb for the rest.
To get a feel of the song i suggest checking out youtube. It's really helpful in picking out small variations in the song, which I found too meticulous to put in the Tab.
I haven't copyrighted the tab in any way, feel free to distribute, but be kind and put in a nice word for me if you do so ;)

Notes: Dock Boggs' "Sugar Baby", from his original 1927 recording. This was his first recording. Tuning is G-modal, though Dock uses it for the key of D. The guitar accompaniment is in D-major, which sounds really cool against the modal banjo melody. A very easy piece with only one short, simple roll. Literal tuning is f#C#F#BC#, which is G-modal (gDGCD) down a half-step.

Notes: The version of SSotM that Earl Scruggs played on is from a recording of an Opry radio broadcast in the late 1940s by Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys. Lester Flatt sang it as a solo number, and Scruggs took a lovely up-the-neck break. Note the transition from G to C in measures 5 and 16, wherein Scruggs seems to be playing a chromatic passage with the notes G - Eb - D - C. As far as I can tell, he picks Eb rather than E. Does this make Scruggs the Father of Chromatic Banjo? You be the judge. The recording I took this from can be found on youtube. Although the recording seems to be in the key Bb, I have tabbed it in the key of G.

Notes: An old standard, covered by the Country Gentlemen (Eddie Adcock) and before them, Les Paul. I tried to incorporate some of the iconic (to me) parts, whether it be Waller's chromatic guitar riff, Duffy's opening mando notes and quasi-bendy thing, Adcock's single string work, or Ben Eldridge's Scruggsy break. There is also a scalar descending thing from Bela, some of my own musings, and Les Paul's dramatic ending. Have fun with it, and make it your own!

Notes: I know there is a version of Sunset on the archives already but I tried to tab something out in accurate rhythmic notation including the solo from the studio album. (Live Art version coming next perhaps?)
I did this sibelius so I don't have bends or hammer ons but I trust you can figure it out!
Enjoy!

Notes: The tab is split into 2 parts because Tabledit doesn't let unregistered versions save over 16 measures in a single file (also: there's that annoying watermark). There's both the PDF and the Tabledit files.
Note that this is only the "B section" of the song - the first section of the song is more of a Scruggs-style melody, which I haven't learned yet.

Notes: Sushi is a fine fiddle tune written by the great Kenny Baker – the most elegant bluegrass fiddler, in my opinion – and it works well on the banjo. You can see Mr. Baker playing Sushi here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Noi625ZhRR8&feature=youtu.be The version on the video comprises only 2 parts, whereas the recording of Sushi by Saskatchewan fiddler J. J. Guy on his album “Cadillac” includes a third part. My arrangement for the banjo includes all 3 parts.

Notes: Swallowtail Jig in 6/8 time requires a different clawhammer stroke where the downstroke (m) plays the 1st and 3rd note of each triplet. The middle note can be played with a hammer-on, pull-off or drop thumb, depending on where the note is on the fretboard. The tab indicates the downstroke (m) and middle note (h, p, t) in Part A. Triplets can also be handled by skipping the middle note using a quarter note and eighth note pair rather than three eighth notes in a triplet. Ken Perlman suggests thinking of:
"hickory dickory dock" (triplet) vs "the mouse ran up the clock" (quarter note paired with eighth note)

Notes: Bill Emerson is one of the all-time greats on bluegrass banjo IMHO, and over the years he has written a bunch of memorable tunes. Perhaps his signature tune is Sweet Dixie, which he recorded when he was with Jimmy Martin in the 1960s. Emerson had written and recorded the tune earlier than that, however, and Martin’s name was included because he was the leader of the band. In any case, Sweet Dixie is a great driving piece that every bluegrass player should include in his or her repertoire. It is formed around a percussive series of pull-offs on the first string, and buddy it is effective. It’s normally played in the key of D; so capo up 2 and go to town.

Notes: This is an orginal by Alison Brown. I don't know if this is exactly the way she plays it, but it is note-for-note pretty much the same. A tricky finger buster this, but a terrific exercise to get your left hand moving around the fingerboard. If that wasn't enough, it is a delicious gentle tune that moves through several keys.

Notes: Feel free to add comments for this ROUGH draft. I tabbed this about 5 years ago and used to play it about 3/4 the speed that Vestal plays it on the bluegrass 2000 cd. As far as the key, I thought it was A but it might be Dmaj7-9. I'm a Scruggs picker but was so inclined to learn this song so I just messed with it a little. Scott uses a lot of technique on this song and his touch and timing are so good that it makes it a great song to listen to. I might try to play the version I tabbed to give some insight on what I translated and there are a couple of phrases I play a little different than the tab but it's about 99% of what I play now.
part 1 Dmaj7-9, Dm7-9, G7, Fmaj7, Bb9#11(b5) Dmaj7-9, Dm7-9, G7, G/A
part 2 Bm7 Cmaj7, C#m7, F#7, Bm7, E7sus, G/A
