Notes: Here is a nifty G to C run I first heard Sonny Osborne play in Bugle Call Rag, on a concert tape from the late 1960s or early 1970s. Kristin Scott Benson also uses it in her recent (2009) version of Bugle Call Rag. The first two versions are what I hear Sonny and Kristin playing, respectively (with thanks to Kristin for helping on her version). The third version varies by one crucial note. You decide which one you prefer.

Notes: Québécois tune from the Olympia Quebecois session repertoire. From the repertoire of Bertrand Deraspe. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote Evangeline in 1847 as a tragic but fictional account of two lovers, Evangeline and Gabriel, who were separated on their wedding day during the expulsion of the Acadians from Acadie (present-day Nova Scotia, Canada). In the poem, Evangeline spends much of her life wandering North America in search of her lost love. The real Acadian exiles were also heartbroken from being forced from their homes.

Notes: This is based on the Gaither Carlton recording on Clawhammer Banjo, V. 2 ( CO-CD-2717). The tab captures the notes, but the critical element is that loping pulse that Mr Carlton brought to this song. Key of C, with banjo in the Little Birdie tuning (eCGAD). Notes: This is a tune by Chris Pandolfi. This is the A part of the tune, which is played twice before the B part. The song actually begins at measure 5, and that's where the backup starts. Notes: Another tune I needed to learn for my Celtic band. No tab was available, so I worked out my own version. I couldn't tab it out to play the slide at measure 3 exactly as I play it. What happens is you give the last note of measure 2 (3rd string, 2nd fret) its full eighth note count. Then, without picking again, you slide up to 4th fret on the 1 count of measure 3. The slide all happens on the 1 count and is done by the time you play the 2nd string open. So it's different from a bluegrass slide in that respect.

Notes: Everybody loves Steve Earle's "Galway Girl", good verses, very good chorus and now a fine banjo solo based on Sharon Shannon's intrumental. The tune itself is not difficult. Most of ornementations I usually add are left, you can add yours. The only difficulty is stepping between 5th and 12th positions and back. Enjoy and if you like it, let me know.

The song is written by some one named Paddy Moloney, supposedly for
a friend's wedding, who's name is Garech.
My playing may be a bit off here on the sound file (also on guitar), my apologies.
The transcript is from me playing a phrase and then notating it down on paper and then setting it up in Guitar Pro 6.
Hope you enjoy it;

Notes: An Irish jig transformed into a CH banjo reel.
It is normally played in D-mixolydian (D scale with C-natural), but I tabbed it in "triple-C" tuning, so you'd capo up one step to get to D.
The triple C tuning seem good for the drones of these piping tunes. Adding extra beats to the jig to change it from 6/8 time to 4/4 time "americanizes" the tune. One BHO member even said it seems "bluesy".

Notes: Alison Brown is an incredible progressive banjo player, right up there with Bela and a few others. I first saw her in the 1990s when she was accompanist for Michele Shocked, and her reputation led me to a Michele Shocked concert in Victoria, B.C. Brown lived up to expectations, and in the process I discovered the delightful Michele Shocked. In addition to her progressive and jazz playing, Brown can rip off a straight-ahead bluegrass tune. Girl’s Breakdown is one of her originals that makes good use of Keith/Scruggs tuners, hence her clever play on the title “Earl’s Breakdown.” The tune is on her wonderful 2000 recording “Fair Weather.”
When examining the tab, you will be able to hear the note changes in the MIDI file -- and you will need to listen to the MIDI, to hear the tune's melody -- but these are not reflected in the frets indicated in the tab, which show the string going from 0 to 0. This is because I employed the pitch change function to achieve that sound (also, how would TablEdit depict detuning the second string from B to A --- e.g., 0 to -2?). The actual notes played are shown in text above the appropriate section of tab. And I want to thank Jack Baker for alerting me to the pitch change function. Through the years Jack has been generous and accommodating in helping me to understand the subtleties of TablEdit and of musical notation in general, and I gratefully acknowledge his guidance here. His contributions to BHO have been very significant.
On the recording, Alison really burns it up; hence the MIDI is high-speed. But you can slow the MIDI down, to hear it better. And if you find the TablEdit file to be too long to print, with both musical notation and guitar accompaniment displayed, you can go into “Print Preview,” then “Print Setup,” then “Multitrack” to suppress the musical notation, and you can delete the guitar by clicking on the green bar above track 2 and deleting.
The structure of Girl’s Breakdown is AAB.

Notes: This is written by Alison Brown and you must have a pair of D-tuners installed for this - and see that they are well oiled! A lot of twisting and turning. The difficult parts are where you have to turn the tuner in advance to be prepared. This and then in the B-part where the banjo is tuned to D for some measures.

Notes: This tab is based on the version sung by Joan Baez and Dirk Powell in concert. Most will know this tune as "Country Blues," but this arrangement is not in the Dock Boggs two-finger style. Baez and Powell play this in various keys - from Gb modal (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1T0t31hc8c) to G# modal (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKoMq3injTc).

This classic hymnal lyrics has many variations (I've provided a few of the better known ones. Repeat between the " : ", 1st round through can be repeated until the melody is learned, then add hammer-on's and pull-offs when you are comfortable. Will also list it as "Old Time Religion" since there are no other clawhammer versions in G.

Notes: Here is a well known pop tune from the teens by George Cohan, "Give My Regards To Broadway". I have it arranged here in the key I found in a book of piano tunes, and it is a good key for the tune. Has a whole lot of inside, square (un-syncopated) rolls. Has a single string lick, and the ending is a great Don Reno "rake" ending, used on such tunes as his (Rural Rhythm) recording of "Limehouse Blues". Has a Rhythm Guitar & Bass rhythm track. Have fun!

Notes: I tabbed this as a hybrid between a melodic, stand-alone arrangement and a backing track for singing along. The melody, though not exactly rhythmically true to the Led Zeppelin original, is pretty apparent throughout the arrangement, with the secondary bridge ("Seems that the wrath of the Gods...") section being the most notable exception. Overall key is D, so I tuned the fifth string to a. It's a little bite-y at the beginning to my ear, but I believe the arrangement as a whole works much better with the a. I hope y'all enjoy it, and constructive criticism and advice is most welcome!

Notes: This is my take on this cool old tune by Bill Monroe and Byron Berline. I'm adding a minor chord in Part B which isn't in Monroe's original version. This is something that I noticed over the years lots of musicians throw in when they jam to this tune, and I've come to adopt it too, it seems to belong and gives some subtle added flavor... I've made a YouTube video which is pretty close to this tab, found at https://youtu.be/-1UQG4gCUAw

Notes: This is a 2F arrangement based on Eddn Hammon's "Old Greasy Coat". It uses both thumb lead and index lead. It is normally an A tune, but as a banjo piece, I like to lower the pitch down to A. I tabbed it in standard G tuning (capo 2 for key of A), although many others might play this in the relative Sawmill G tuning. Notes: This is a tab of Billy Faier's Green Corn. Listen here to Billy Faier's reecording: https://youtu.be/VNt9eGEqJZg .
It is played by clawhammer or Pete Seeger's "basic strum" but with a little different stroke pattern and use of alternate hammer-on and pull off on the fourth string:
1. Strike any string (1st to fourth) with the index finger (or middle finger if you prefer)
2. Hammer on the forth strong on second fret (and keep the string fretted)
3. Brush down with the hand (or a finger if you prefer)
4. Thumb the fifth string
5. Pull off the fourth string
6. Strike any string (1st to fourth) with the index finger (or middle finger if you prefer).
7. Hammer on the forth strong on second fret
8. Pull off the fourth string

Notes: This arrangement is in open D tuning (f#DF#AD). Most banjo pickers play "Black Mountain Rag" out of G tuning, usually capoed up 2 to A. However, following Doc Watson's version, guitarists tend to play it in C, capoed up 2 to D. On the banjo the tune is also wonderful played out of open D tuning (f#DF#AD). Don Reno played it in D tuning, and he renamed it "Green Mountain Hop." On his "Something Auld" album, nearly 50 years ago, Bill Keith also played "Green Mountain Hop" in open D tuning, and it is a great arrangement that I have tried to capture in this tablature. Pay particular attention to the interesting variation on the V chord (A) beginning in measure 34 -- for me, this clever sequence typifies Bill Keith's brilliant playing.

Notes: Hey Folks!
Here's a killer Noam solo off of his most recent project with the new band "Mighty Poplar". The whole record's wonderful through and through, but AGACNP sent me a request for this tune specifically, and I think it's a great solo.
There's one little section where the fingerings are iffy, so I put a couple alternate options down at the bottom.
Tabledit's been a bit weird with exporting to pdfs recently, so you'll see a couple staves being weird on the side of the pdf - luckily it doesn't screw with the tab if you can manage to ignore it.
Enjoy!

Notes: A melodic version of all 4 parts of Grey Eagle, inspired by the fiddle playing of Bobby Hicks. The version on banjo by Butch Robins was also an influence, and I tip my hat to him with the harmonic section in the last part. I originally posted this tab in October 2011 and in April 2020 have added the bass track. What can I say, I have slow reflexes.

Notes: There are already 237 versions of Groundspeed on BHO. Why add another? Well, this one has some interesting features. For one, the B part in the first break is to my ears (but what do I know) perhaps more faithful to Scruggs’s recording on the Foggy Mountain Banjo album than most other versions, all due to the difference made by one note, the second string B rather than the first string D. In other words, following the Flint Hill Flash's lead, I hear Scruggs's first pinch as involving the open second (B) string and the third string at the second fret, rather than the open first (D) string and the third string at the second fret. For another, the second break starts out high but is mostly down the neck, in melodic style (hah, take that, Flint Hill Flash!). It’s a tasteful version, if I do say so myself. The third break has some ideas you may find useful, and the ending is of general interest and utility. It’s an ending lick I first heard J. D. Crowe play.

Its in open G, with a capo on the second fret (aEAC#E) and I classified it as 'intermediate' because it has a few instances of drop thumb, but its really pretty easy to play. Notes: An article in the Banjo Newsletter in December, 1980. Two tabs, Pastures of Plenty and Darling Nelllie Grey. Article contains suggestions on playing with the banjo tuned, in a relative manner, to the top four strings of a guitar or the bottom four strings (Kyle Creed's tuning for Cumberland Gap). 5th string can be tuned to play in most any key. Chord positions are like guitar chords.
Additional words for Darling Nelly Gray (corrected spelling) - B.R. Hanby
What I published in the Banjo Newsletter only shows verses 1, 2, and 5 and the two choruses.
3. One night I went to see her but "she's gone" the neighbors say,
The white man bound her with his chain,
They have taken her to Georgia to wear her life away,
As she toils in the cotton and the cane.
4. My canoe is under water and my banjo is unstrung
I'm tired of living anymore;
My eyes shall look downward and my songs shall be unsung
While I stay on the old Kentucky shore.
