Notes: Here is my clawhammer interpretation of Ed Haley's Half Past Four. According to John Hartford, Ed's son Lawrence Haley said Ed wrote this tune about the passing of Sherman Luther, Ed's firstborn boy, who died in childbirth at half past four in the morning.
Ed Haley (1885-1951) was a blind fiddler who who traveled widely throughout West Virginia, Ohio, eastern Kentucky and southwestern Virginia, and is known for his powerful fiddling and distinctive repertoire.
The tab includes open-string pull-offs marked by bold "PO". The tuning is aEAC#E, which can be reached by tuning the strings up, or by capoing standard G tuning at the second fret.

Notes: This is an untitled tune on page 12 of the Hamblen Collection, a compilation of tunes from the 1800's (this is only available from the Library of Congress, in facsimile). Since the title 'Untitled Tune' is confusing, I think 'Hamblen 12' serves a decent stand-in, and anyone familiar with the Collection will understand the meaning. If you're curious about this collection, a Google search will be very fruitful!
This tab is to go with a previously uploaded MP3 of me playing the tune (included here), and a MIDI file of this tab.
'Hamblen 12' has been lots of fun in a session and I'm hoping more people get to play it!

Uncle Josh and Cousin Jake sing it as a duet, and Earl takes 2 breaks that I have tried to capture here. He must have been feeling frisky on the day it was filmed, because he tossed in some whimsical ideas.

Notes: I miss playing all of those wonderful exercises by C.L. Hanon for Piano. These exercises were intended to build accuracy, speed, finger strength, and endurance. Recently, I finally decided to convert one of them to tab for banjo. Play slowly, with metronome or with Tabledit until you can play them perfectly, then gradually increase speed over time. Unlike with the piano, you can move the exercise down the neck if you want to increase finger stretching.

I couldn't find a tab or lesson that sounded close enough so here's a note by note reconstruction of the recording. Fingering might be off but I'm 99% sure of the notes. The recording is about a quarter of a tone sharp, if you're planning to play along with both you might want to pitch shift it.

Notes: This is a fiddle tune often played at old time jams.
Notes : The last D in measure 4 is an alternate string pull-off. I couldn't figure out how to do this in TablEdit.
Slide in measure 10 could be replaced with an hammer on, and the 1st G in measure 11 could be played fretting the 1st string 5th fret. The slide in measure 15 could be omitted and simply strike 1st string 5th fret for a quarter note instead.
Though listed as intermediate, it is probably advanced beginner with a few hammer-ons and alternate string pull-offs.

The song uses a "simplified" version of the original chord progression (Neil Young played Em7 chords often, whereas I have simply replaced many of them with Em chords because I couldn't figure out a way to make it sound as good on the banjo).

Notes: Here's the banjo back-up tab for an old fiddle tune, "Hell's Broke Loose In Georgia". The first time through is very easy, all played out of the drop-C tuning open C chord, and only one left hand ornament, a simple choke. All forward rolls. The second time through is more of an intermediate/advanced version using hammer-ons, pull-offs, and more difficult chokes as well as more varied rolls. This is in the style of banjo & fiddle. Has a mandolin melody track. Have fun!

Notes: The Don Reno banjo instrumental "Hen Scratchin' Stomp". It's sort of Don's take on Katy Hill, with the second section in E instead of G. As in the 1949 Mercury recording of "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" by Flatt & Scruggs, the banjo plays in E minor while the backup band plays in E major. Creates a cool effect. This is a good start to learning Don's rolls, & to see where he differs from the Scruggs style even in its basic rolls. Not too hard, & an altogether fun piece to play. Try bringing it out at your next jam; very few people know it, but it's a simple tune & the others will pick it up quickly. I highly recommend listening to the Tennessee Cut-Ups original recording. It's full of energy, drive, & will give you a good idea of Don's timing.

Notes: This tune (Cymraeg) was written by Robert Lowry in 1876. The hymn lyrics of William Rees (Dyna Garuda fel y moroedd) were later set to this tune. Translated into English by William Edwards.
I've rated this as 'intermediate', but it may be 'beginner'. I'm unsure, as I've not played long.

Notes: Here is a contest fiddle favorite, "Herman's Rag", arranged for 5-string banjo. This is a rather difficult piece, and is transcribed almost note for note from the music for fiddle from "The Craig Duncan Master Fiddle Solo collection", from Mel Bay. The banjo melody is an octave down from the fiddle, and I've changed the melody where it would go too low for the banjo. I've left the contest variations in, so it makes quite an interesting banjo piece. Has a Rhythm Guitar & Bass rhythm track. Have fun!

Notes: Highlands Hornpipe is a two-part Canadian fiddle tune in Bb & F major. I think there may be a third part or bridge in G minor floating around out there, but I'm not sure. The form is AABB, ending with the first part (AA). E.G., you're at a jam, the fiddle plays AABB, the mandolin plays AABB, the banjo plays AABB, and the fiddle plays AABBAA, end of tune. This is a nice smooth piece, and fortunately it's not too hard to get the real smoothness. There is some "cross-picking" (crossing one right-hand finger over another), and some dropping the middle finger inside. The A section is in Bb & the B section is in F. Has a Rhythm Guitar & Bass rhythm track. Have fun!

Notes: In addition to being an ace banjo player, Bill Emerson is the composer of wonderful original banjo tunes, several of which I have tabbed and placed in the BHO tab library. Lately I have been listening to his album “Home of the Red Fox.” The title track is another of his gems, and the tab I have posted is the way I play the tune. Give a listen to the recording, available on youtube.com. He has a stellar cast of supporting players – Jim Buchanan, Jerry Douglas, Jimmy Gaudreau, Tony Rice, and Mark Schatz – and the dynamics of their playing on the tune are nothing short of sensational.

Notes: Here are two clawhammer versions of Home Sweet Home. It is mainly based on Mack Woolbright's three-finger version from 1927 but transfered to clawhammer. One of the versions is based a kind of "clawhammer backward roll" and is very close to Woolbrights three-finger version! The other version is a more straight clwhammer.

He later formed his own band, the Pilot Mountaineers, in which he played fiddle, his son Oscar played banjo, and Pop Stoneman played guitar. Frank Jenkins plays his version in the drop C tuning (standard C tuning) and he uses mostly a forward roll. He also plays a nice variation with strumming that can be heard in the recording, but it is not included in my tab - yet.

Notes: This is my interpretation of how Mack Woolbright played the "Home Sweet Home" breaks the the recording of "The Man Who Wrote Home Sweet Home Never Was A Married Man" made 1927 by Charlie Parker and Mack Woolbright on Colombia 15236-D: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfpAMkcL2ow . Earl SCruggs' version is based on Mack Woolbright's version. In his book “Earl Scruggs and the 5-string banjo” (1968) Earl tells: “There were several three-finger banjo pickers I admired who lived near our Flint Hill community. There was Mack Woolbright, a blind banjo picker who recorded with Charlie Parker on the Columbia label in the late 20’s. I remember him from a visit he made to my Uncle Sidney Ruppe’s home; rocking in a rocking chair and picking “Home Sweet Home” in the in the key of C. The G7 chord he played in this number was one of the most thrilling sounds I had ever heard. I was about six years old (1930) and I wondered how a blind person could play so beautifully.”

Notes: HBB is a great tune for jams, an improviser’s dream. The chord structure is straightforward, and the melody is loose enough that you can have lots of fun with it. I have tabbed 3 breaks that give some sense of the range of improvisation the tune permits. To tell the truth, I threw everything into it but the cat, the sump pump, and the kitchen skillet. There is of course a danger that improvisation can descend into what I call “banjo noise” — an endless cascade of notes, often in chromatic scales, that somebody else called “a blizzard of nails” — and I tried to avoid that here. The only part of the tab you might find difficult is the pull-offs, but they should come with practice.

Notes: Apart from the fairly "straightforward" melodic parts in the first break, the rest of part A could be described as Scruggs style but using his own unique choice of rolls and right hand positions to single out certain notes such as at the beginning of both breaks.
Both B parts are mostly backward rolls over 7th chord positions with pinches to move from C to Bb to A. In bar 49 he uses a 1-3-5-3 roll to inch up from the F shape G chord to the D shape, and then the same for the C. Hope this helps shed light on what he is doing.

Notes: My interpretation of Bill Keith's break on this mandolin piece. Transcribed from a live recording at Bern, Switzerland, 4/15/77. Capo at 2.
Performance notes: This may or may not be how Bill fingered it, but it was the easiest way for me to get the notes. in measures 3, 11, and 27, barre with the index finger on the 9th fret, and use the ring to get the notes on the 11th fret.

Notes: This ballad is also known as 'Edward.' I play this in an index lead two finger style, but it can be easily adapted to clawhammer style. Make liberal use of on-the-beat slides on some of the melody notes, as if playing this on a fretless banjo. I learned the tune from an Art Rosenbaum recording, where he plays it in clawhammer style.

Notes: Great jazz tune, here using voice-leading, with harmony notes underneath and melody on top. It's a straight version of the "head." I also have an intermediate version with easier chords, and another version uses chord arpeggios, rolling through the chords, but not concerned with stating the melody, just playing around it for fun. Enjoy!

Notes: Byron Berline wrote this delightful tune and first recorded it on one of the early albums by Country Gazette. In addition to a guitar break by Clarence White, the recording featured a stellar melodic banjo break by Alan Munde, which I have tried to capture here. The break is difficult and tricky, but mastering it is sure worth the effort.

Notes: Hey kids, ever want to impress your chums down at the malt shop by playing two tunes at once? Well, here's your chance! I first heard Bill Keith play something close to this back in the 1960s and much later heard Bobby Thompson play a version on the famous front-porch tape that Steve Arkin and Keith made of Thompson in 1964 or so. There are no standard 3-finger rolls in this piece, and undoubtedly there are different (and probably better) ways of playing the same notes. But this is what I came up with, and it seems to work, although it is tough to play.

Notes: I found this odd little tune - sometimes called Cuffe Street or Old Cuffe Street - in 1000 Fiddle Tunes, The Fiddler's Bible, several years ago. At the time I couldn't find a recording of it so I put chords to it that I thought worked and we'd play it at jams. Since then I've found a couple of versions of it and, not surprisingly, mine sounds much too American. Oh well, I like it.
