Notes: A version of O canada I cooked up. Up the neck section may appear more difficult than it actually is. Use basic major chord shapes (D shape, F shape and straight barre) and that's really all there is too it (except the very end of the up the neck where you'll use a couple of minor shapes for the last two descending chords). You can hear it on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJYiixdCN0w) or on my hangout page. Write me if you have any questions.

Notes: "O Holy Night" ("Cantique de Noël") is a well-known Christmas carol composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847 to the French poem "Minuit, chrétiens" (Midnight, Christians) by Placide Cappeau (1808–1877). Cappeau, a wine merchant and poet, had been asked by a parish priest to write a Christmas poem. Unitarian minister John Sullivan Dwight, editor of Dwight's Journal of Music, created a singing edition based on Cappeau's French text in 1855.
It is also very popular in Sweden, and when making this arrangement I listened a lot to an old recording by the old Swedish tenor singer Jussi Björling.

Notes: This has been sitting on my computer for a while so I figured I'd share it. I will add the ending riff when I find some time, and please excuse any errors! Lots of single string doubles, and a sort of klezmer scale, very cool tune and tough to play fast. Bela plays around with the melody quite a bit adding triplets every once in a while.

Notes: This is my version of Stephen Foster's "Oh! Susanna!" The first part is classically-inspired from a version I learned decades ago in Memphis, TN. Notes: I got this tune from Larry Edelman, who got it from Tom Sauber. Two finger banjo arrangement by yours truly. It clearly seems related to the song “Oh! Notes: "Old 1812" is a fife tune used in the sound track of the movie "The Outlaw Josey Wales". From what I've read it's based on a Revolutionary War piece entitled "Welcome Here Again". This has been transcribed from the key of D to G to better utilize standard banjo tuning. The large Roman numerals alert the player to fretboard position while the smaller numerals directly above the tab suggest left hand fingering. Right hand fingering is suggested as "t","i","m".

Notes: Source is "The Phillips Collection of Traditional American Fiddle Tunes". the A-part is in d-major, and the B-part is in a-mixolydian. Ken Perlman has a beautiful version in double-c tuning in his book "Melodic Clawhammer Banjo", capo-ed up two frets. This was my attempt to come up with an arrangement in standard open-g tuning, with the minor exception of putting in the 5th string high g-drone to a high-a. This can be accomplished quickly in a session, with for example a railroad spike.

The tab is in "triple C" tuning (good for the drones of pipe tunes) so capo up one step to get to the usual key of D-myxolydian (D scale with C-natural).

Notes: This is a fine old Flatt and Scruggs chestnut. Lester really cranked up his singing on this one, and the Bluegrass Album Band also does an excellent version with Tony Rice on the vocal. I have tabbed my interpretation of Earl Scruggs's break and of J. D. Crowe's break (with the BGAB). Scruggs's break shows his genius for capturing the melody without always relying on cliched licks or rolls. Crowe's break is derived from Scruggs's, but departs from it in subtle ways. Both are worth learning.

Notes: A timeless song. Here are two D versions of the song "Old Joe Clark". Often considered a beginner banjo tune, after many years there are still many possibilities for variations. The first version is a simple and more or less faithful adaptation of the melody that can be found in Miles Krassen's "Appalachian Fiddle". In the second the melody is a syncopated personal adaptation accentuating the mixolydian color of the tune.

Notes: The first break is similar to what Eric Weissberg, Bill Keith, and others played in the 1960s and contains that OJC run useful in so many tunes (perhaps Weissberg created it?). The second break is more the way I play it today, with lots of drive coming from forward rolls (in Bill Keith's terminology; I used to call it "walking up the strings"). Either version is worth adding to your arsenal.

Notes: Sonny recorded this on a relatively obscure album, "Down Yonder, by Wade Ray and the Country Fiddlers," with Sonny O. on banjo and Homer and Jethro on guitar and mandolin, respectively. The A part of the banjo break employs several backward runs, and it is interesting to contrast it with the more common break first recorded by Eric Weissberg in 1963 and then by Bill Keith in 1965. I have included a section of their A part for comparison.

Notes: This tablature provides an approach to playing harmony to OJC. It opens with "eight potatoes" (as Steve Arkin named it), the riff that fiddle players open tunes with, but as approximated by the ole 5-string. My friends say that this particular harmony part has the flavor of the Middle East; so maybe it should be called "Mediterranean OJC." Whatever you call it, the harmony part is fun to play, and you will be able to come up with plenty of variations as you work it.

Notes: Ole Liza Jane is a traditional nonsense song that Don Stover recorded as an instrumental. You can hear the lyrics in Merle Travis’s version on youtube. The tablature is my interpretation of Stover’s arrangement on the banjo. The first break is pretty close to Stover’s, whereas the second veers off a bit into modest improvisation. In particular, the B part of the second break is more faithful to Travis’s vocal than to Stover’s B part on the banjo. Stover plays OLJ at breakneck speed, and his recording features a fine mandolin break by David Grisman. You can hear me playing it on a practice tape from some years ago, on the media section of my BHO webpage:https://www.banjohangout.org/myhangout/media-player/audio_player2.asp?musicid=9860&archived=

Notes: I wrote this on a longneck, so it's technically in "Open E". I've tabbed it out that way with that tuning, but it'll work just fine on a standard banjo. Three finger with some Irish inspiration.

Notes: "Michael Ferrie wrote this tune after watching the family’s new kitten playing in the garden. The kitten bravely decided to tackle a large skorie (Herring Gull) and jumped on it’s back. The skorie not much impressed, took flight with the kitten aboard. Luckily for the kitten it managed to escape but not until the bird had flown several hundred yards down the field." Notes from the album Da Farder Ben Da Welcomer" by Fiddler’s Bid.
I played it here on two banjos - Goldtone cello banjo and Ramsey standard.

Notes: Posted under the original title "One Horse Open Sleigh", commonly known as Jingle Bells. This is a beginner version with a Youtube link to Richard Hefner's version in open G tuning, inlcuding lyrics. There are several versions of Jingle Bells posted, but none as the original title, so here it is. Simplify or get fancy as you see fit. I've posted the Richard Hefner link for now, I will post to my website when it becomes available. Linked to the Christmas Corner and Beginner Clawhammer groups.

Notes: Originally written by Canadian Frankie Rodgers (d. 2009, BC, Canada), this tune became a popular fiddle contest tune. An oak pik is a snowy white owl and is both a popular toy amongst Eskimos and Canadians and an omen of a person's spirit being lifted upon death.

Notes: I tabbed this tune from the melody as played by David Grisman on the mandolin. I think I got it pretty close. It's much more Keith style than Scruggs. I'm still learning how to play it up to speed, and I'm sure some of you will get there quicker than I. Any suggestions/corrections are welcome.

Notes: The tenor banjo is tuned to open G tuning DGdg, there is capo on the 2nd fret. The first part (in the concert key of E) is played in D (chords D=0202, G=0000, A=2222), the second part (in the concert key of A) is played in G (chords G=0000, C=5520, D=0202). Feel free to change the rolls, as well as the filll-in licks/walking bass connecting parts (anyway, the vocal version has shorter connection between the words in the first part - adjust the number of walking bass measures by yourself).
This is just one of possible versions how to play the melody in the first part and how to roll the harmony in the second part. The third part (also in the concert key of A, played thanks to capo in G) is missing but you are supposed to play some fill-in lick under the fiddle or harmonica solo - find them e.g. at http://banjosessions.com/?p=109 .
The melody over the dominant A chord (concert B chord) in the first part is compromised - however if you have big hands, you can reach the actual melody note on the 6th fret (counted with capo) with your pinky while holding the barre with your index finger on the 2nd fret.

Notes: This is a clawhammer version of the Bluegrass fiddle classic Orange Blossom Special. There are 3 instrumental parts plus one optional vocal part. I have tried to get several variations of each part. You don't have to learn or play all variations - just choose those you like. Orange Blossom Special is a tune with opportunities and possibilities, so use your fantasy and creativity and make your own version. I have just tried to illustrate a few possibilities.

Notes: My three-finger arrangement of this traditional Celtic fiddle tune. Combines Scruggs, melodic and single string technique. The tab plays through twice, with two different versions of the chords. First time through is what I call "modern" harmony. The chords are all basic, but there are many more chord changes. Second time through, chords are simplified. Same banjo part both times.
