Notes: Al Osteen was an outstanding bluegrass banjo player based in South Carolina, who was also a mentor to younger players, including Kristin Scott Benson. Among his many excellent arrangements is a lyrical version of “When You and I Were Young, Maggie,” played mostly in a chordal style. When another accomplished player, Frank Eastes, took a lesson from Al in 2010, he recorded Al playing “ ... Maggie,” and I was enchanted when I first heard it. I have tabbed my interpretation of Al’s arrangement and present it here.
