Notes: In 1978 I played at the first Coombs Bluegrass Festival, on Vancouver Island, along with several members of my Vancouver-based band Silver Spring. One of the highlights of the festival for me was to meet a fine musician named Gerry Patch, who played with the Canadian band Border Ride. Gerry was an excellent singer and multi-instrumentalist, and, like me, he was a Bill Monroe fanatic. He and I ended up jamming in a field at the festival site, with him on mandolin and me on banjo. In addition to the many Monroe songs and tunes that we played, we also improvised a couple, including a simple but I think catchy hornpipe. Pumpkin Patch Hornpipe is my attempt to reconstruct what I can remember of that tune, which I have carried around in my head for many years.

Parenthetically, I have become aware that Gerry Patch died at age 40: https://sites.google.com/site/coombsbluegrassfestival/good-times-past-and-gone
Although I met him only once, I was impressed with him and his musicianship. And abrupt change of topic: I recognize that the B part of Pumpkin Patch Hornpipe is similar to the A part of Fisher's Hornpipe. C'est la vie.
