I suppose you could travel the U.S. without having to visit any of the big cities, aside from needing airport and rental car access. Of course, I've only been in 12 of the 50 states. 14 if you count Utah and Colorado, but since I only saw the airports in Salt Lake City and Denver, I don't count them.

Time is plentiful.........money is not .................how much do trailer parks charge for motorhome? Is it possible to camp in motorhome without using recognised parks.?...............this is frowned on in New Zealand....but still possible here in Australia in some places if your vehicle is suitably equipped.

Most of the national parks are in the $20.00 per night range, I think, for camping. Most of them are first come, first serve, though, and some don't take RV's. RV parks take reservations, but are more expensive; I've seen some that were 60 dollars a night.
I don't have any idea what renting an RV would cost, but they typically get very poor gas milage(I knew someone who was getting 8 miles to the gallon), so I would think that fuel would be the biggest expense.

I've wondered the same thing. I usually tour by car or motorcycle. I'll tent a night or two and then do a motel. Does the cost of renting a motor home, plus the fuel, plus parking and hookup fees cost less than what I do?

quote:. A few years ago my wife and I toured NZ in a motorhome.....it was very economical as the RV was diesel......and because new zealanders pay a diesel tax each year , fuel was only 75 cents a litre as against $1.75 for petrol (gas)....................it seems to be pretty expensive in the US, like it is here in Australia.........maybe motels are the way to go after all.

The average price for gasoline in the U.S. is a little less than that, I think it is around $3.75 a gallon (it's closer to $4.00 around my area). I don't know about diesel RV's for rental. You probably won't find motels for cheaper than $60.00 per night, anyway.

You could always rent one of these babies. I bet it can't cost more than $1,000 an hour to operate.

And if you fly it upside down, you can mow the grass on the camp site:-)

Then flip it over and blow the clippings away for that golf course clean look.

If I had that kind of money, I'd pay someone else to drive the RV while I looked out the window and drank beer.

I'm not sure that makes it the last word in accommodations though.
