So, Bee, tell us more about your apple.
My kinfolk from the late 1700s are buried in small plot surrounded be an apple orchard in disputed w Virginia Pennsylvania territory. So, the blood in me craves apples, vintage apple varieties, and things made with apples. Brad

@rinemb,
Ok, well you asked for it :-). Eating apples is one of the few things I have noticed that can keep me in high-energy for over 8 hours of the day without eating anything else (I do drink water though, duh).
It is not like I only eat apples, but I do very much enjoy them as natural as they can get (no pesticides, wild ones, and as old as they can get in terms of varieties). Enough 'bout me though...

Thats some fascinating family history you got! I live in Southeastern Pennsylvania, in a small town. Just curious though, is that apple orchard still around? I am sort of a history buff on Pennsylvania and West Virginia history, so it would be cool to know if it exists still and where it exactly is. I never been west of State College, but I hope to head to those beautiful mountains someday.
P.S - That photo of the moldy apple aint mine :-), I got it from online... It does look very tasty tho...

Bee, my great great..on mom's side settled near Winchester, VA. I have many ancestors buried in the area. Including a small fenced in plot near Gore, VA. In the middle of an active apple orchard. I went there and dressed up the plots about ten years ago. They were buried there in late 1700s to early 1800s. The apples were not ripe. I would love to know what variety they were. I am grateful that the orchard owners have preserved the integrity of my kin's burial location. We did eat many fine apples in the area. But I have no idea what they were. Brad

Get yourself one of those apple coring punches from a kitchen store.
Core a bunch of apples and hammer in a piece of bread to plug the bottoms of the holes.
Mix up raisins, cinnamon, brown sugar and butter (and dark rum?) and pack the holes.
Bake 350F until a skewer comes out soft (30-40 mins). Vanilla ice cream is good.
Not happening here until we get some weather cooler than 100F.

I don't know much about apples. Have learned most from here on BHO. I do know after eating many apples during season throughout the Appalachians, that fresh picked off the trees are sooo much better than the stuff we get in the store here...who knows how long that sat in a warehouse to ripen etc. We used to have a couple decent apple orchards in the area, that the public could go pick and buy. Brad

We get a lot of apples from South American crops with the reversed seasons. Climate controlled
nitrogen gas storage works quite well to sustain the industry.
Of what? Thousands of varieties, globally? I have 3 or 4 that I like to eat (Gala, Honeycrisp) and cook with (Granny Smith).
Old time varieties cooked to slop. I need the visual of chopped apple pieces, tenderized.
GS are great, sized, I can run dozens through my peeler in minutes.
Last night was 2/3 of a sack of prawns. Even Heidi-cat gnawed her way through one. Did not object top the lime and the salt.
Spare a moment today to think of the people from the town of Lytton, BC.
They set 3 all time Canadian high temp records over 3 days. (49.5C top).
Then yesterday, the whole town caught on fire. 20 minutes to get away.
Lytton is gone. Burnt to the ground. Families scattered, poor communications.

I misposted earlier...My dads side settled after the Rev war on a land grant above Moundsville on Rine's Ridge. He farmed oats, apples, and a hog or two and whatever else to live and trade with. And legend says his cider was good too. That was Lazarus Rine who came over from Germany about 1750s. Apples around there good, too. Mom side were near, and in Winchester, VA over into Capon Bridge area and Gore which is just west of Winchester. my ancestor, Azariah Pugh, died 1856, is buried in Hampshire County, WVa. in a small plot surrounded by an apple orchard. Like the song "The Soldier and the Oak." I'd like to think my buried kin have contributed to the surrounding apple trees, only a few feet away. Brad.

My prayers out to the folks of Lytton.
Honeycrisps are a fav of ours for eating. Seems, though, in the last few years, the ones we are getting in Kansas are hit and miss. Brad

Thanks, Brad. Of course that was supposed to read "Left over chicken". My wife was there, of course but that's not really "over", and she's no lady.

Shared another cold shrimp & bagels dinner with Heidi-cat last night.
I had boiled the shrimp with lime juice and salt, no objections
BUT
She always will only eat the front half, the fat half, of a shrimp tail.
So I bite them in half and we are both happy. 2 for her, 12 for me.
It was still to hot for any novelties. Only 38C/101F yesterday.
Temp touched 16C/60F in the night, cooling trend arriving as forecast.
I have experienced 47C/117F on a dozen occasions, it never gets easier.
Believe I'll go to the pub (take a jacket for the A/C) for either pizza or calamari.
I'll decide when I sit down with a pint. Masks are now optional in public places.
I'll take one to the pub for the sake of etiquette. But they are still classed
as a choking hazard when you eat or drink.

We found split top rolls. Last night we grilled the buns and genuine German weiners.
Tonight will do same with a first steamed then fast grilled lobster tail. Bobby Flay style.

figmo59,
I gotta admit, that looks soooo tasty! I never cook fried chicken before!
I drank some Amish root beer from here in Pennsylvania today, and it was great. Other than that, ate turkey sandwich for dinner, which also was good.

Since the big heat has gone, I might actually turn the oven on and cook something to eat!
Don't remember the last time I had solid chicken ( chow mien doesn't count).
I've got dessert for a grilled supper:
Bananas, one each. Slice lengthwise, skin on.
Cook on the grill maybe 5 minutes each side.
In a small pot, mix brown sugar, butter, cinnamon and dark rum.
Heat that to a bubble.
Plate the nanas in their skins with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a liberal splash of sauce.
Spoons required and plate-licking is optional.

BBQ, grilling or smoke woods (Hickory/Mesquite/ect) don't grow away out here in the far west.
What's bagged and sold in the stores for the rich twitches is too costly for me.
My Dad cooked on big lump mesquite charcoal. Nice to do the same but it won't happen.
Tradition for First Nations is Alder and it is pretty nice. #1 for any fish. I've seen Pacific salmon done over a wet cedar plank but I have yet to believe it's a flavor improvement.
My preference has always been apple.
I grill nothing. All the meaty things get dry rubs and 3 hrs at 285F with apple for the first hour.
All I need is a reliable heat source and a gasser ( the last 17 of them) does exactly what I need.
I work them hard. When they crap out, get another one. Three in this house and 2 more in the city. $20 each or less is always the right price.

It's bachelor survival tonight for Bubba! Terry's gone up island to bond with her sister. I bought a nice steak & a cob of peaches & cream a nice russet potato to cook on the gasser. Not happening.
I had a few & I'm having grilled cheese with 2 slices of Kraft cheese with a slice of Shnielder's Baloney in the middle. I can't find ketchup so HP sauce it is!
Just me, the cats & Malcolm Holcomb .

Hug the cats. I know where you are at. Frozen fish & chips baked for me.
Just getting used to the ferocious heat coming down. Might see 7C tonight.
Believe I can do chicken cordon bleu tomorrow.
