Biscuits and gravy- a dish that never fails to baffle the British! ??
And last night's dinner, which I forgot to post: pan sauteed pork chop and asparagus on the side.

I hope to get back in town and home tomorrow. Then I can get back to some "Picture-posting" meals. And a cocktail while in a hot tub!

Going to be fried liver with bacon, LOTS of onions, sour cream and a couple of cans of porter.
Handfuls of grape tomatoes for garnish. I have a heavy-bottom, non-stick, 14" pan that's just right for this repast.

I, for one, will stand up and shout, "YUMMY!" Brad

I would cook for you and I AND make certain that there's lots of leftovers.
Just going to be S&P seasoned flour. I might do 1/2 corn flour for more crispy.
Of course, the liver gets done in bacon fat.
For the food police = this happens maybe every 3-6 months. So get stuffed, none for you.

The Mrs. served her home made lasagna with Caesar salad.
(I went off liver when I was a kid. The taste didn't bother me, but the texture ... .)

Boiled dinner tonight. Bought a corned beef, half a cabbage, onion, celery, carrots & potatoes & my own homemade pickling spice.
We made sour dough soft pretzels today. First time we've tried them AND tried to make them. They turned out unbelievable! I mixed some Keens hot mustard, yellow ball park mustard & honey for a dip.
We're both taking some into work tomorrow for people to try.
It seems I've lost the ability to post pictures past Dec 2020. There's new photos in there. just can't get them out!
geoB - Posted - 01/24/2021: 18:04:34
Tuna salad my way.
2 cans of drained albacore, mayo, LOTS of green olives, a shake of my homegrown tabasco pepper flakes, fresh ground pepper. Spread a dab on a saltine, top with a bit of fresh tomato or avocado.
Fresh pea pods, cut celery, sliced jalapenos and a homemade dip.
Cold Lime water
And 2 out of 3 rounds of yahtzee.
8 or 10 fresh grapes.
BTW the artichokes are fantastic this year. I ate one yesterday for lunch with a BLT and some lentil soup.

Liver with mustard on a mayo'd saltine.
I'll make hors d'oeuvres anytime out if anything edible.

Cottage Pie Fig - shepherds pie is made with lamb..... however, yours being venison does add a new quandry to the naming convention

Congrats to your son and his teaching family, Jonty.
This kind of self sufficiency bodes well for exploring the world with confidence.
Don't forget that NOW is the time to begin the assembly of a family cookbook.
I've just finished a major revision of my book. Everything my kids liked and more.

It's big and it's messy, and I never confess to the wife. But every so often when I am visiting one of my suppliers offices in a city called,Sheffield, we call out to a particular'greasy spoon' cafe who do an amazing bacon, liver, onion and (hip) brown sauce sandwich. It's so big I can barely move afterwards and I wouldn't eat one wearing a suit but boy, they are good.
Brian T - Posted - 01/25/2021: 14:59:57
I'm so hungry by the time the liver, bacon and onions are done, I'm too impatient even to make gravy. Cooked lots so I can go around again for supper tonight. Fresh onions in bacon fat.
Salad could be a green pepper. Cans of Porter.
I remember that liver was on the menu in most small town cafe's in western Canada when I was a kid. Probably the fast food burger joints killed it off. I was so easy to feed as a kid.

Jonty, You mentioned Sheffield. My favorite kitchen butcher knife is one of the first knives I ever "redid". Its an old Sheffield carbon steel, kind of a bull nose tip, 10"/25cm blade. I picked it up for a buck or two, as a wreck. I scoured blade leaving the stained and pitted patina. removed old handles/scales and rivets. Added dark exotic wood scales, and pinned them through the original holes in the tang. And added a brass lanyard hole. this old steel sharpens easily to razor sharp. Many early survival camp knives in America were repurposed Sheffield kitchen knives.
Tonight I carved up leftovers. Brad
Wet Spaniel - Posted - 01/25/2021: 16:17:03
I’m sure you are aware that Sheffield was a major producer is steel and cutlery Brad. Nice to see that a good old Yorkshire made knife is doing well in Kansas - looks like you made a good job with it too! From the look of the blade, I think that is what I’d term a butchers steak knife.

Sadly, I hadn't realised it was tonight. By the time the penny dropped I couldn't justify a trip into town for a haggis as 'essential'. We'll be following your lead at the weekend.

Well, I never knew that. My wife was born in Toronto, so I'll definitely mention this to her. I would have thought if there was one place outside Scotland you could get authentic haggis it would be Canada. MacSweens are just about the best brand, but not so easy to find in England.

Good plan. Hopefully they'll still have some on sale - I left it a bit late and had to grab the last one on the shelf!

Baked chicken thighs last night, with prefab mac n cheese on the side...

We baked a pre-made frozen cherry pie. A regional brand that uses good fillings and a surprisingly good pastry.
Pie was served after we each ate a KFC pot pie. I would have bought a new KFC chicken sandwich to try, but of course, they were sold out.
I ask the manager why KFC didn't learn from the Popeyes rollout.

We call that a 'cheat meal' in our house Brad. A cheat meal is a good thing every now and then - nice and easy and a bit of a treat. I don't think I've ever seen a chicken pie in a UK KFC - that said I've not been to any in the last 12 months!! My son and I are cheating tonight - hot dogs in store bought brioche buns with store bought chilli on top of his.

We "cheat" Once a week. Not on any particular night. Often its after we debate who's turn is it to cook, and resolve discussion by cheating. Then there is the laziness factor. brad

Found some cheese smokies in the back of the freezer, melting out of the receding glacier in there.
Groceries came yesterday so lots of choice to make some sloppy mess for supper.
Weiners and beans (+Worster/garlic powder/soya sauce/jalapeno Tabasco)?
Wet Spaniel - Posted - 01/29/2021: 12:21:39
DIY night tonight chez Spaniel. My daughter made the dough and the tomato sauce. Admittedly the cheese was shop bought - very nice looking margarita pizza!

Chilli cheese hot dogs for my boy, he really liked using the blowtorch to melt the cheese !
Brian T - Posted - 01/29/2021: 12:31:07
What kid wouldn't? Blast away building food. I'm next in line for the torch.
Vietnamese Salad Rolls ought to be next.
Collect all the ingredients. Cutty-cutty, chop-chop lots of supplies.
Make enough just to get everybody started.
I like to build them on a damp cotton tea towel = non-stick.
Sit back and my family insists on making all we need.
Slick method to get a lot of kitchen help.

No "cheating" last night, but did keep it simple. First the cocktail hour, with a "Written Word". Then a shrimp and pasta with crusty rolls, and an Italian red blend. Cherry pie leftovers for dessert...later, While watching the new Netflix movie, "The Dig," about the incredible "Sutton Hoo" discovery just at the opening of WWII. Brad
