Hmmm, tonight I may eat at the Candle Club, a private dining and bar, we belong too. When I was kid my dad thought it is where the crooks and heavy drinkers hang. I joined a few decades ago. Or, I will just water the gardens and eat some kraut and sausages I have in the fridge. After all, I am bach'ing it this week!

Must be on the same page Brad, we had kraut and Polish sausage and brats last night along with some funeral beans!!! My wife woke me up at 3:30 and told me to close the windows because she thought the wind was blowing the smell from the paper mill toward our house. I got up, but I certainly didn’t close the windows and I didn’t tell her any different either!!! Wow………just sayin !!!

Just had some great sauerkraut & sausage last night! Made sandwiches with the leftovers for lunch. Little bit of good brown mustard and some sweet pickled peppers, dark good sandwich. Picked up some pork chops at the store this morning. Thinking that and a baked sweet potato for supper.

We pick blue crabs in the summer(they turn red after they cook).
It takes a few times to get the knack of cleaning the meat from the shells.
They taste good, but you almost always end up with knicked fingers from the sharp shells.

Today for the the 4th of July we had a Culver’s custard cone and went for a short hike along the lakeshore……Michigan that is!!! Came home, took a short nap and grilled some Sheboygan Bratwurst ( from the bratwurst capital of the World) along with some grilled sweet corn ( I’m assuming from Florida) and Mrs. Slammer made her famous tater salad. Buns for the brats were a local buy with a fluffy center and a chewy crust to hold up to all the fixins !!!
The brats were loaded with sweet sauerkraut with caraway, Chopped onions, ALDI’s beer mustard and a squirt of Ketchup. Corn was a little tough but sweet and tasted like corn. Tater salad was as usual………..phenomenal !!!
Dessert is a Chocolate fudge cupcake that Mrs. Slammer made!!!
Best thing is………….tomorrow is leftover night and the exact same thing we had tonight.
Gonna have to check the wind direction tonight before I go to bed…….just sayin!!!

Seems to be a trend...

Last night, about 9pm, bought 5 packs of good got dogs for half price. Picked up some steaks and chops for about 40% off. Meat shortage my a$$. Gonna lay in some hamburger today.

Brian T - Posted - 07/05/2022:  14:21:20

I live in a 650 little village with farms and ranches all over, up and down the valley.
Meats and eggs are easy to find and we see exactly what a hit we take for transportation
of everything else.

The real hell of this is that I get an early year craving for ALL THINGS fishy. Except octopus.
Calamari is OK, deep fried or marinated tube rings. And I'm paying mostly for transport like never before.

Killed a whole bag of scallops last night with butter, lemon garlic and bread crumb.
Curried fried rice with shrimp in hoisin/honey/garlic sauce tonight.
Still have a bag each in the freezer, really tempted to do it again.

STUD - Posted - 07/06/2022:  16:25:42

Tonight, we steamed some steamers and served the with melted butter and a little minced garlic. We had shrimp with Eagle Island's leftover sauce, and finished off with some baby carrots and bleu cheese dip.

The shrimp at Mr.Islands favorite fish market....
Was...Preemo...

The shrimp we got at our market was fine but no match fer the quality.. of his favorite market...
Still good tho...
Actually these steamers we had tonight were the ..Best I have ever had...!

Super good...

Shrimp bag #2 is gone. No more in the freezer. They were just 31-40 so takes a lot for a feed.
Maybe 60 tails per pound. Ungrateful Rumpuss cat won't even eat them peeled raw.

I boiled them from frozen in lime water with salt. I like that with big glass of chardonnay.
The curried brown basmati is a disappointment for taste and appearance.
Last night tonight and the rest goes into the big white telephone.

It's a Pie Iron Night!

Whatever you can lay between two pieces of buttered bread and clamp into a pie iron is what's for dinner.

Got a nice bed of coals going, laid in some potatoes to bake, sweet potato for me, assorted fillings include various cheeses, ham, bacon, steak, sausage, salami, pepperoni, assorted sauces, peppers, onions.

For myself, I'm thinking ham and cheese in my first pie, then a Philly Cheese Steak pie for my second. Baked sweet potato w/cinnamon butter and a cherry pie ala mode for dessert.

This just in, neighbor has crumbled, Jimmy Dean sausage and insists on preparing "Sausage Rolls", via cast iron pie press. I believe I will let him do just that.

If'n u don't know, &00gle "campfire pie iron" and remember, cast iron only. The aluminum pie presses produce excellent charcoal briquettes, but lousy pies.

Thos are fun Mr. Rat... :0)

Brian T - Posted - 07/10/2022:  17:34:52

Pie Irons. So I need a real charcoal fire to do those? Maybe in a big panini press?

Tortellini Alfredo tonight, maybe a cup of frozen peas tossed in there as well.
Don't know what my shopper bought. If just cheese torts, I'll dice a bunch of salami
and toss that in as well. Grated asiago/parmesan/romano.

Last night had to be a bowl of cooked and peeled shrimp and a tray of 8pcs California Rolls and a variety of fruit. Box of raspberries in my chardonnay. I need a fruit shopper twice a week.

Saturday brunch - first time in over three months. Thought I'd go geometric for this one. I made French toast (with blackberries and strawberries) for Sunday brunch this morning, but the camera's battery was dead. Couldn't wait for the charge.

Brian T - Posted - 07/11/2022:  14:45:39

Cheese ravioli and a bunch of them burst in cooking. Cheese stew slop.
Added 2C frozen peas and a couple oz fine dice salami. In a lake of Alfredo.
Left overs into the big white telephone.

Chicken breast cordon blah tonight. I'll pull a few to freeze and cook/reheat another time.

STUD - Posted - 07/16/2022:  15:57:59

Bucatini with red clam sauce!

Brian T - Posted - 07/16/2022:  16:37:42

Chicken breasts too badly freezer burnt and really did not smell at all like chicken when thawed.
Long gone in the garbage.

Big pkg local beef short ribs. Will dope up with one of Mopick's rubs, 3 hrs at 275F.
Maybe an apple juice spritz. Will load in 1/2" slices/oiled yam last hour.

slammer - Posted - 07/16/2022:  19:06:56

Out of all the pasta shapes, bucatini is……….well, you know STUD!!!

Slammertini !!!

Brian T - Posted - 07/17/2022:  01:59:20

The goop was mushrooms & mushroom soup, celery soup, can of red, can of white wines, pepper. season salt, herb stuff, sliced mushrooms, black olives, artichoke hearts and I forgot the diced yam for the last hour. 3 hours covered at 300F. The beef short ribs were 75% gristle and bone>trash. The bits of meat were very tender.

Pasta: Friend with business in Turin, Italy claims there's 800 words for pasta and 400 of those are regional synonyms. I used to make lots of lasagna as after school snacks for my kids. They shared with a few of their friends, I don't believe those kids were fed and watered very well at all.

I like the fine spaghetti, almost the angel hair, and the small shells. Big fan of cheese sauce but all the bulk store Alfredo gets tossed this week = old and far too gelatinous and scratch doesn't take long. Think I'll just use a herb mix and grated cheeses.

Potato skins. Found some old salami in the freezer that I can dice. Got everything else.
Might whip up a muffin pan of a dozen baked crab rangoonies in wonton wrappers.

It was pretty damn hot out today so I cooked in the garage as to not heat the house any more than it was already. Too hot for spaghetti dinner , but couldn’t stop myself!!!
My sauce was special as i used fresh garlic Scapes from da garden . Better than chives or green onions IMO. Garden salad with fresh picked yellow cherry tomatoes.
Best thing besides the view and cocktails is………..I got plenty of leftovers and Mrs. Slammer is leaving town tomorrow so I’m good for a couple days!!!
Slammer!!!

Paul R - Posted - 07/18/2022:  21:52:17

Yesterday: Caesar salad, bacon-wrapped filet, ice cream. Today: Lasagna, garlic bread, lemon meringue pie. (Oh, yeah, I made French toast - challah bread - for brunch. Maple syrup, of course.)

Brian T - Posted - 07/19/2022:  00:42:56

Sat in the kitchen with a BIG glass of red and ate a whole bunch of potato skins.
The old freezer pizza pepperoni was the right meat. So was the last of my onions.

BIG splash of Worcestershire is the right thing to do. I used to think that was the right taste out in the forest, hunting, just as good in my kitchen. Added a whop of Tabasco Jalapeno, just to make sure.

Oh my, the BGC! That's Beans, Greens, and Cornbread! I don't why I get excited over such simple fare, perhaps because it was "Grandmother food", and perhaps because such is no longer served at diners in the South, and so now is a special treat. Had Pintos with ham hock and onion, Collards doused with Sriracha, Corn Cakes off the griddle, which you may know as hoecakes or johnnycakes. Most satisfying---and cheap! (I should open a diner?)

Liz here:
I made 2 blueberry pies with this year's harvest, augmented by a bag of frozen ones. One for us,one for a neighbor. I blind baked the bottom crusts first so they wouldn't be soggy.

Christmas in July!

Earlier today, a friend of mine said he was prepping a ham, so I made my best, oven cornbread with green onion and some mashed potatoes. Another neighbor made the green bean casserole and sweet potatoes, and then there appeared a spinach and bacon salad and some cranberrie relish and sweet corn!

Ate like there was no tomorrow! We decided to walk it off with a trip down to the Frosty Treat for some soft serve. Good dessert for Christmas in July!

Oh Liz, it’s too early here for blueberry pickin but won’t be long. Mrs. Slammer is low to the ground and loved hunting blueberries like I love fishing!!!
Not much better than a piece of fresh blueberry pie with a nice scoop of vanilla ice cream on it. I’m all a tingle just thinking about it!!!
Your pie looks amazing and kudos to you for par baking the crust!!!

Csrat, I’m sooooo jealous!!!

My kids call those, fried pancakes. I call them, claim jumpers. I float them in butter and it's a great method if you're going to use something hearty for a topping, like a fruit compote, or clotted cream or a scoop of ice cream or all of the above ...

Shoot! Now I'm thinking funnel cakes for tonight.

Not tonite's meal, too darn hot to cook. This is an oldie but goodie from last October after the nine day stint in the really big not-so-local hospital, where they found out my breathing issues was a big, honkin' nasty  cancer tumor in my right lung.

The hospital food was actually not too bad, as far as hospital food goes, but for some reason I had a hankering for some good old Hunkie food, so as soon as possible when I made it back home, I totally destroyed the kitchen and whomped these up, complete with 'rough cut' potatoes as we call them and sauce from scratch. And YES they were every bit as good as I had hoped :)

(And the end of November last, I had my worthless right lung surgically removed, and the margins were clear, and as of 3 weeks ago, I got a gold star on my CT scan!!)

Sorry, didn't mean to go on about myself and post some old food, but that's all I got for now. Y'all make some good looking food for sure!

pizza! The Naan bread is slightly convex, upside down. Holds a lot of toppings with nothing spilling over.
Mild salsa, layer of sliced fresh tomato, pepperoni, green pepper, TexMex grated cheese mix,
one to have sliced black olives for a change, many shakes of Tabasco Jalapeno goop. All we get are the silly little bottles so I buy 6 at a time.

I do believe that my shopper found oven-crisp coated onion rings and seasoned curly fries that will need testing. The oven will be on, warm by 6PM in the west kitchen, grape vines doing the best that they can.

Supposed to be an appetizer dish, but meh, it's good to eat for an easy and quick meal. You only live once!!

Creole jambalya.
Andouille sausage, onion, red and green bell pepper, red jalapeno pepper, fresh roma tomatoes.
Thyme, oregano, bay leaf, black pepper, lots of garlic.
Long grain rice cooked separately with "assafran flor" [from the flower of the safflower plant]-- kind of like Latino saffron.

Brian T - Posted - 07/29/2022:  19:32:23

Crab Rangoon is crab and cream cheese and a bunch of herbs and spices. Really nothing that needs cooking. So, I will cut lengths of long English cucumber and hollow them with an apple corer gizmo. Pack them with CR goop and refrigerate. When that sets up, cut all into 1/2 " slices. Bake cast iron trays of curly fries and onion rings.
Must keep up my fluid intake in this heat. Supper might be pretty good.
