Pork stew from an Aldi's "kit": small roast, spices, and vegetables packaged together. Al was dubious at first, but ended up loving it.

BRAD, those pretzels look amazing!!!! Are you sure this was your virgin run at it?
I have an array of mustards and cheeses that would pair well with those and could probably scrape up a beverage or two to wash em down!!! Very impressive!!!

Thanks. Our fridge, thanks to wife's upbringing and heritage looks like a specialty shop for pickles and mustards. We split a bit on German-ish beer preferences. So a variety is often on hand. But all of it tastes better drawn from a keg over there. Brad

The weather here in da U.P. was absolute crap today and I was in the mood for something good, but different. Hmmmmm, Thai, Italian, Steak, Shrimp, Creamy, Spicy, it all sounded good. Had some beautiful shrimp in the freezer and decided on Massaman Shrimp curry over Jasmine rice. It fit a lot of my taste cravings and was just what I was hungry for on such a crappy day, and if I don’t say so myself, it was pretty damn good and glad I have enough for Monday’s leftover meal !!!

Had calamari, fries and 2X cole slaw last night in the pub. Ordered a takeout pizza to snarf on today. I was right: paced myself and took all day to enjoy it.
Being the fish eater that I am, the pub gave me a slab of smoked Coho salmon to take home for Sunday dinner. Believe that I will bake some spuds and have the Coho with those tomorrow.
Ugly cold, wet, windy night and colder this week, if I use the 'S'-word

Will have to look up what that is, but looks good. We most often have a bag shrimp in the freezer. Shrimp has often prevented a run through a regrettable drive-through meal. Brad

They never object to me bending the menu to eat what I want.
I took 2 salts to play with: a chocolate sea salt from the islands here in the Salish Sea and a black volcanic sea salt from Iceland ( perfect on fries).
I will thaw that slab of Coho salmon. Greek potatoes are wedges tossed in Greek seasoning and a bit of Kalamata olive oil. Baked on a sheet. I like the mint and cinnamon that comes through.

This Sunday morning indoors due to wet patio cushions. Panera’s pastries, Simply Orange oj with pulp, Green Mountain coffee. The only thing I made was, the arts & crafts style napkin rings. On my fave China-from me mum. I picked the last rose we will ever get to pick from the home my mother lived in, as it will be sold before spring. :-( Brad

Tonight we started with a German/Munich wheat beer and homemade Bavarian pretzel from yesterday. Then reworked leftover roast potatoes, fresh roasted Savoy cabbage wedges, and German weisswurst-grilled and steamed in some of the beer we did not drink. Plenty of mustard. Paired with leftover Alsace Riesling.

That looks superb Brad. I love Bavaria, and especially Bavarian beer and sausages. We have skied in Austria numerous times and usually fly to Munich, have a few days in and around the city before travelling by train across Bavaria and into the Tirolean alps, then do the same on the return leg. One year my son (a real sausage freak) kept a tally on how many sausages he ate on the trio - I will never forget him looking up at me with stuffed cheeks (and looking a bit like paul Newman in the egg scene in cool hand Luke) and saying ''that's twenty eight Daddy''

I had a really nice couple of hours in the kitchen last night with the radio on and a couple of bottles of last years scrumpy (home made hard cider. My dad had just dropped of a load of apples from his place so I wanted to make an apple pie. I had heard someone talking on the radio about a pie with layers of puréed apple, sliced apple and frangipani - the frangipani is a bit out of my baking skills league so I swapped it for an apple crumble (crisp?) topping - it was really good. I also made a cottage pie but instead of mash, I used a mandolin to thinly slice the potato - it turned out really good, almost like a boulangere potato topping.

Even while using the thing that comes with the mandolin to prevent these real bleeder accidents. I did 15 zucchini’s and got lucky! Brad

Jonty, I did not see the pics earlier on my phone, but now I see the cutaway on the pie. My wife would drool on site of the potatoes. Me, I am drooling on the thought of the homemade apple pie. That is the cultural difference we managed for 49 years. Brad
Brian T - Posted - 10/04/2021: 13:32:09
Cut, core and thin slice half a dozen apples. Toss with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and a squirt of lemon juice. Tiny bit of oil and stir to cook well in a 14" pan.
Mix enough pancake batter with spices to look like at least 1/2" deep in that pan.
Pour the batter as a layer all over the apples, put a lid on the pan to trap the heat.
When the top is firm, use a plate to flip the entire apple "thing" over to cook/brown the top side.
There you have it: quickie apple pie.

Also, earlier, my son had been ‘creating’ a snack for his unwell sister - mini pizzas made on ritz crackers. I’m still struggling to work out how or even what he managed to do to this block of cheese? My American geography isn’t too great and I realised that I should have flipped it the other way, but it’s not a bad match for Texas?

Mix hamburger seasoning and flour about 1/2 and 1/2.
Dredge 1/2" thick green tomato slices in that and fry on medium in bacon fat. Not veg oil, bacon fat.
I can't even get away from the stove. Knife? Fork? Plate? and just sit there and eat.

True enough. When the kids are around they're more of an appetizer than a side dish.

Looks a little more like Nevada than Texas, if Nevada annexed a bit of Idaho. Put a picture of a slot machine on it and he could win a geography contest with it ![]()

Couldn’t make our trip to New York without a quick stop in Cleveland for arguably THE BEST corned beef sandwich EVER !!! I have seen stacked sandwiches like this and had always thought it was way too much meat and meat to bread ratio is all wrong. Taking a bite into that much meat would be a chew fest!!!
Let me tell you, this has been my 3rd time to Slyman’s Deli in Cleveland and it truly is a religious experience!!! I have NEVER had a sandwich come close to the flavor and pure sexiness that this one exudes!!! You take a huge bite and it literally just melts away into liquid meaty juicy goodness!!! I wish I could share it with all my foody friends and BHO food lovers, because it is one of those Must try to believe moments!!!

Last night wife finally roasted up the fresh beets that had been around a while. I went to grocery store, grabbed a package of Bob Evans Mac&cheese and a Cooks ham steak. Then tricked up the M&C with added shredded caciocavallo, fast smoked then grilled the ham steak on the gasser. Trouble was, those hams are so loaded with water they are difficult to brown...but then I saw my mapp gas bottle I forgot to put away. That took care of adding some browning!

I go out to eat particular things that I never feel like making at home.
Too messy, too stinky, can't buy small portions to be used up and so on.
I have learned that each place makes at least one thing that I really like.
That lack of variety is of no consequence, I could just go sit somewhere else.
They let me bend the menu to make it my own and that assures them of a serious tip.
Figmo, Liz: I could eat that taco salad all day long. Sure looks good.

Canadian Thanksgiving weekend coming up. I don't know if I appreciate company any more or not.
Month by month, more and more reclusive. The house is full of food and drink, warm and dry.
I don't want to cook, even with helpers. At the very least, I want pumpkin things, pie included.
Dig out a bird or a big 1/2 and slather that up with Mopick's Country Rub and into the oven, I suppose. Must make certain that I have the fixin's for pie crust, I am good at that. Fine dice candied ginger should be in the post from the Silk Road Spice Company.
I need to eat bulk dressing/stuffing. Lots of baked potatoes with cheesy toppings.
Curried green beans with bacon. Apple logs. Harvard beets, if I had any.

I had my young assistant helping me out last night. He has a recipe book from his favourite restaurant so every once in a while we make some of the dishes. Last night we had chicken madras, aubergine & sweet potato curry (v v hot) Saag paneer (spinach and hard cheese) and black Dahl .
The paneer cheese is funny, it doesn’t melt, so you can brown it up in a dry frying pan, or do it the fun way.
