Busted! I like lamb, wife does not. It must be the gene pool. Her dad was stationed in England and Ireland in preparation for D-Day. He grew to hate "mutton." So it was not allowed in their house, in any form or age.
The meat was a mixture of ground pork and ground beef. Brad

Someday, I should share a pic of that small kitchen table that is often in my food photos. It is American chestnut, with country turned legs and nice apron of chestnut, made in later 1800s. I need to freshen the top, as it has taken the wet cloth wipe a few thousand times too many. Kind of bleached out the color of the lighter grain.

Ha! As shepherds usually tend not to look after either pigs or cows, that would be called a 'cottage pie' over here Brad. Never had minced pork in one, that sounds good - i like to slather mine in Worcestershire sauce.

I will correct her on the "cottage pie" not a shepherds pie, for sure. She was proud of it. As for the Worcestershire sauce, we both like and use if often, if we do not use Maggi. We will try that on the next one. Brad

Not a criticism by any means Brad, just pointing out one of those little quirks. They look, great. I do have to confess though, I 'm not sure which I like the most - the taste of Worcestershire sauce, or the sound of an American pronouncing it - you guys do say it in a funny way ![]()
![]()
Round here, it gets shortened - it sounds like 'wusta sauce'
rinemb - Posted - 05/22/2020: 06:40:48
I settled on: worse-stir-sure or war-stir-sure. No criticism taken, we like to get it right.
We do a lot of German cooking (remember MIL was from Saarland) I have learned to google translation and use the speaker, to hear how many of those words are pronounced.

I'm finishing last night's supper.
A large Seafood Basket from the Keag Store.
Deep-fried scallops, haddock, clams and shrimp. The french fries are coated with the same batter.
I call it in,they say "It'll be 10 minutes" and I say "I'll be 20 minutes getting there" and she says "I'll wait 10 minutes to start it."
I have a good appetite, but I can't eat it all in one sitting.I've never had better.
Their cole slaw and tartar sauce are perfect, imo.

That sounds like my kind of meal Steve !!! When I was a kid my mom would place the order and I would hop on my bike and go the Mehring Fish Market. They did carry out fish frys and fresh fish. Their deep fried haddock was the best and Mrs. Mehring always told me she threw in an extra piece for me to eat on the way home. I didn’t know why she said that? Many years later I found out my mom called her and said although the fish is great, the order is always one piece short. Mrs. Mehring assured her the count was right and secretly followed me home one day, only to see me sneaking a piece . She knew I loved her fish and never charged my mom for the extra.
She was also my 3rd grade teacher. Sure do miss that place , and her !!!

Dale, that's a brilliant story - I'm tipping a glass to Mrs Mehring right now. Not quite in the same league, but there was a little mouse that lived in the passsage between my house and the local, shop that sold fresh bread. Every day my mum sent me out to pick up the bread, that little mouse used to jump up and took a bite out of the crust ![]()

Here's how the leftovers got used! Plus creme brulee from Aldi's for dessert.

That's the way to do it! Fill Your Grill! There's only the 2 of us too so we use up or freeze the leftovers.
I like to buy 2 chickens in a bag or pork tenderloins come two to a pkg. I make a lot of chicken soup & stew.

Buy a whole chicken. Cook the whole thing or just half and freeze the other half. In any case, save all of the bones and make chicken stock from it. It's a 6-10 hour operation, but once it's simmering with the lid on, just let it go. I'll let mine simmer overnight once the temperature is right. Freeze the stock and use as desired for soup etc.
Do the same with seafood or beef, but don't mix them. In the winter I'll just drink straight stock.
Mmm, mmm, good!

Eat the freezer:
The last lump of leftovers in the freezer turned out to be fajita meat, not curried green beans with bacon. Starting to thaw stuff that's actually labelled. All the mystery stuff is gone.
Pierogi with onions and bacon or baby beef liver with bacon & onions.

I'm wearing out thr road to the Keag Store.
I just ordered a Keag Combo pizza.25-30 minutes fits the 20 minute drive taken a little slower.
$12,but I get 3 meals out of it.

Hey, thanks for surviving. Wouldn't wanna kill ya.
I've never grown rhubarb, but I know a lady in Iowa who makes "rubhard" wine from rhubarb. Might hafta ask her for the recipe. I think it's actually her dad's recipe.

This evening the Mrs. made one of my favourites, her hand made burgers with salad greens, sauteed onions, cheddar, and bacon. I doused it with mustard and ketchup. Salad on the side with Thousand Islands dressing. No dessert after that. Didn't need it.
A small chunk of burger fell to the floor and the cat polished it off.
Back in Toronto there was a fish & chip place a few blocks over and a couple of long blocks up, called the Nifty Nook. No frills, just a long counter and the big long frying tub on the other side. Place your order and you'd see the guy dipping the fish in the batter bowl and dropping it into the tub. It was the real thing. If you wanted to eat there, they had three old metal-top kitchen tables, where you could see, through the back door, the rest of the family watching television. If it was take-out, I'd hop on the bicycle and bring the order home in a pannier. It closed while we were still living in T,O, We sure missed it.

Potato salad. And I blame the Egg Salad thread. I knew I had too many eggs so I figured I'd mix a few in with taters and make an Eggotato salad, or Pegg salad, or Peghead salad, or something like that. Boiled about 2 pounds/1 kilo of baby taters, all colors, skin on. Sauteed half an onion that I needed to finish off. Boiled 4 eggs. I didn't do anything special for peeling the eggs. Some fancy mustard (seeds included) and mayo. That's when I realized I was running out of mayo, so I made a new batch, which used up 3 more eggs - bonus! (No Miracle Whip in THIS house!) Added a bit of good turmeric and paprika to the mix.
I had a few bites with garlic Tabasco, then switched to my own spice blend that I make.
Anyway, I used 7 eggs, so that's good. But I've got a LOT of potato salad.
