I didn't take this picture, but found it on the internet. It was too interesting not to post. This was taken in Senegal by a banjo playing traveler. I posted the blurb below the photo.
Travel like this is also full of triumphs of encouraging discovery. I had heard that the banjo had originated in Africa and brought over by slaves, so I brought my own backpack banjo to see if I could get in a jam or two. And while I did not find any bluegrass bands on the beach, I did jam one morning with a guitar toting Senegalese, and saw some evangelical Moroccans strumming on the old banjo to a crowd in Marrakech, prior to giving a fire and brimstone sermon on Islam. And yes, even in Africa, the sound of the banjo still makes people smile.

Hello everyone. I wanted to mention if you've ever shared a picture that you shot on this thread, send me a bho friends request so I can add you to my list (if you don't mind having me as a bho friend).
I always emphasize that each photo should be posted by the copyright owner of that image, so you can tell us something about WHAT IT WAS LIKE being there.
Thanks all,

Hey Dean! Ya know, this thread really deserves to be it`s own separate topic. It is a real treasure to the Hangout and I really enjoy seeing all these great pickers in action. I hope it never scrolls off the first page into the " land of archived posts". It should really be preserved as an open topic.

ledlow, I have seen and heard one of those those Moroccan string bands, they play loud and hard driving, and are really skilled. Don´t know what that particular brand of arabic music style is called. OK, sorry for being a little off topic. More cool pictures, please!

I totally agree with that statement--I can do whatever I NEED on one. However, there is a large gap between my needs and my wants, and no doubt most of us could say the same.

Dean has already posted a few great shots of Jason Davis, but I thought I would keep this thread going and throw these up as I saw him with the soon to be changing Blueridge last night in Valdese NC. He is as solid a picker as you will find....and only 18. The closeup shows the very loose right hand he has. Looks like there is very little tension in his hand, that might be a secret to his speed, and the fact that the hand is only 18 years old! He also looked to be playing a fairly new RB-4, I thought he was endorsing Huber.

I enjoyed your pictures from Mockingbird Hill Park. Our organization purchased the property and the concert hall is still there. We are restoring it and turning it into a retreat center for people with developmental disabilities. I am looking for more historical information and photos. Do you have any higher resilution images of these photos that you can send me at don@ldminc.org.

Great pix Dean... I have a coupla questions: is that an image-stabilizing lens? And do you handhold or use some sort of tripod or monopod? Tnx.

DHoffmeyer - Posted - 01/07/2007: 01:53:37
Yes, and the IS was on for the top image. I usually don't use a monopod for anything shorter than 400, and that's because the 400 is so heavy. Plus I'm just not coordinated enough to use one very well.

Fine images as always Dean. Here is one from last Saturday night in Rudy's Bluegrass in Anderson SC. It was the first time I had seen the Kruger Brothers. Not exactly straight up Bluegrass, but there is a boat load of talent in those three performers! Here is Jens Krüger, with bassest Joel Landsberg.
Camera model: Canon EOS 20D
Exposure time: 0.013 s (1/80)
Aperture: f/4.0
ISO equiv.: 3200
Lens: Canon 70-200 F4 L hand held
Here is one with Ewe. Don't need to leave him out, even if he does pick a guitar!
Exposure time: 0.013 s (1/80)
Aperture: f/2.8
ISO equiv.: 1600
Lens: Sigma 28-70 f/2.8 EX hand held

Keep em' comming!
Short thread....I don't think so! This stuff should be archived somewhere, too much history, and future history here. "Future history" I don't think I have ever seen those two words together! ![]()

I have to agree with Mark - great pictures! But I hate to burst your bubble Mark - the terms "future history" have been used to talk about science fiction literature for years.
I also agree that the pictures need to be archived in some way. I'll also take it a step further to ask - does anyone else have banjoist pictures - especially live performance ones - that can be uploaded? They're great for catching the elusive banjoist in its live environment.
Cheers,
RayD

Here's something you don't get to see that often anymore, and I'm thrilled to add this to the collection. Only a week ago, Ralph Stanley was in the hospital with double pneumonia.
He and the Clinch Mountain Boys played in Appomattox, Va. on Jan 14, 2007. Ralph turns 80 in February.

Dean, Great picture of Dr. Ralph. Great to see that he is out of the hospital and back out there.
Is that a Stanleytone? It looks like it says Gibson on the Headstock. Is it an Archtop? Can't tell from the pic, but it looks pretty flat to me. Hmm.

Royce wears the glasses, Little Roy wears the mic.
Dr.Ralph's banjo is a copy that Gibson made of the old '29 he used for years. James A. Shelton bought the original '29 a couple years ago. Steve Sparkman plays a similar Gibson banjo.
From the old school house in Lucketts, VA, here's The Patuxent Partners' John Brunschwyler- gotta love them German banjo players!

mefloyd, Stanleytones are not a Gibson Product. They are made by Frank Neat. Ralph always has one for sale at his shows. They are a beautiful instrument. That's why I was curious about the one that Ralph is playing in the picture.

BTW, Cory has a 14 year old brother that plays a mean mandolin and an 11 year old brother that does some fine flat pickin on a guitar! Look for these kids in the next few years!
