I don't think that this is JD's prewar. The last time I talked to him the truss rod cover did not have his name on it.

wildboar,

Get picture of Chris Hill in your set. I saw him play with the James King band at Mineral a couple of weeks ago. That guy can flat out mash. I don't think I've ever heard anyone drive a banjer like him. And at the end of their last set they got into some "Ruby" and James King egged him on to get up on the mic and he was a dead ringer for Bobby Osborne's singing. And he's a real nice guy to boot....talked to him for a while after their set.

Stephen, Thanks... Chris was playing with James King this past weekend in Ohio. As always, I would have loved for him to get more up-front playing time... but, then again, I say that with EVERY act I see. I may be instrumentally biased ;-)

Thats a Vega, But it has what was then a Pro II fingerboard and a Vox peghead. The Sonny Osborne Model had a modified double cut style peghead and some inlays only used on his model. That is a "Rare' Vega. Could have been a prototype or just something they put together for him to try out as they were getting the details on what the Sonny Osborne Model would be.

Got this from Sonny yesterday as I inquired about the Vega pictured.

Doug...That is a one of a kind. The banjo that recorded "Roll Muddy River."
It was Vega...between Pro ll and S.O. model.
It was gold plated, Vox peghead, S.O. modified model inlays..Ebony fingerboard, Whyte Lady type tonering..etc. Pretty good banjo for the time.

I hope you're doing well...Me? I'm as well as could be expected.

Here's Bob Isenhour, Elkin, NC, ca 1966.
Bob's brother Tom can probably tell you about the banjo and neck. He was there that night.
I played guitar with Bob at Clemson.

Sorry about the image quality. It was scanned from a Polaroid.

Hey Dean...

I think the new Deering Golden Wreaths have an unplated tone ring, so this one *may* possibly be stock. Of course, he could have changed it out for most anything, but if the plating is the key indicator, then it could possibly be stock. Deering went with their "Deering '06" unplated ring, different neck profile and ivoroid binding in the model Chris Hill is playing.

The ring in the pic doesn't look unplated, I'm pretty sure it's gold plated, I have an unplated ring and it's not shiny at all it's matte and has a slightly green tint.

I've personally seen 2 of the more recent Golden Wreaths and both had the unplated rings. Both looked just like the one in the photo above. Deering uses an interesting buffing process on these rings and they appear to be almost a bronze color - again, just like the one in the photo. Plus, if you read the description in the link in my earlier post, it supports what I'm saying.

Forrest, You are right. I spoke with Chris for a while after his James King set at Mineral back in July. It is a stock, unplated Derring ring. And that banjo flats honks. I've never been all that impressed by the Deering banjos I've been around but this one got my attention for sure. I'm sure the picker had something to do with it as well. I haven't heard many pickers drive a banjo like Chris. He was pretty funny when I talked setup with him. He said that he just fiddles with the head tension until it sounds right and that weekend I believe the quote he used was "It sounds purty keen right now..." I thought that was a funny way to describe a banjo. Translated....I think that means "it'll peel paint right now..."

I took quite a few photos at Gettysburg last week, since for the first time in several years I was
able to stay all four days, and I saw at least part of every set. I'll try to post some as I go through
them all in the next couple days.

To start things off, here are Sammy Shelor and Sam Bush during an All-Star Jam at the workshop tent:

(The girl playing fiddle is Kate Lee, a 15-year-old classically trained violinist from upstate New York
who is working on becoming a bluegrass fiddler and singer, and who played a set on the main stage
Saturday morning.)

This was my first time at The Osborne Brothers Bluegrass Festival in Hyden, Kentucky. It won't be my last. This was how the old festivals used to be -- relatively small but with a first rate line-up, nice people, local vendors with good food, and perhaps the best sound I've ever heard. Dean Osborne has obviously worked very hard to make this festival one of the very best.

Here are a few of the banjo players, starting with Dana Cupp with Bobby Osborne hidden behind. Dana is playing his pre-war RB-4.

Also from The Osborne Brothers festival in Hyden, here's Aaron "Boo" McDaris of the Grascals. Boy, was his pickin' "on" that day!

Although perhaps not known first as a banjo player, here's the legendary multi-instrumentalist Curtis Burch noodlin' on one of Arthur Hatfield's excellent banjos. Brought back memories of the early Newgrass Revival days.

Cool pics. What's Sammy Schellor? 6'6" or so. He's a big dude.

Great pic of Curtis Burch. I suspect he can pick a 5 string pretty good.

Thanks for the Kate Lee infi. I was wondering who she was. It got me thinking that there's some good young talent coming online in the BG field. There's some interesting years coming up I'm figuring.

I'd like to have seen and heard the Sam Bush Scott Vestal duet there.

Not quite as big a venue, but there was a flag, and Ben Eldridge did his best to
color coordinate with it last Sunday at Gettysburg:

I'm not sure how tall Sammy is, but he certainly makes everyone around him look short.

Kate Lee did a "meet and greet" type workshop, where she talked about the challenges
of switching from classical to bluegrass. Not surprisingly, the hardest part is getting comfortable
with improvising breaks - she said her tendency is to want to go home, spend a week working
up the "perfect" break, then come back and play it. But she is trying. She said she was "really
nervous" during the jam, but that it was amazing to get to play with Sam Bush - she thanked
everyone she could think of several times for giving her the opportunity to do that. She actually
got interested in bluegrass through her singing, since she doesn't have much of an opportunity
to use her voice in her classical music activities. During her set on the main stage the emphasis
was more on her singing than her fiddling.

I loved the Sam Bush/Scott Vestal stuff - I had never seen Scott live before, and it was a
bonus to get to hear some neat fiddle/banjo music from him and Sam.

Hey, Mike. I'm guessing: she lost a tooth (which we can see missing in her smile), but because the banjo-tooth fairy couldn't fit the banjo under her pillow, he put it under a table for her to find? In either case, she seems pretty happy to have gotten her hands on that banjo.

Banjo Bobby

Just because he lives in the city doesn’t mean this urban musician can’t play a little country. Sitting on the side of Oregon Avenue, Banjo Bobby plucks some twangy tunes on his banjo and breathes new life into old-world jams on his harmonica. Dallying the sunny days away with folky notes, the resident — now retired — has gained his own audience, as people wave and affectionately honk their horns as they pass by. S. Phila Review

Jack:

Thanks so much for putting that photo of Stehlik up. That Banjo Newsletter stands out fondly in my mind as being my first introduction (via Stehlik) to truly innovative banjo music that wasn't necessarily jazz--something that could be classical-ish, weird, pretty, and banjo-y all at the same time.
