I agree completely...that picture puts as smile on my face every time I look at it...you managed to capture the joy of banjo playing in a still picture...amazing!

Thank you.....Ken Landreth

Hey Dean, those are some great pics of Sonny's banjo. Did you happen to get any close ups of Don Reno's banjo? I'd love to see those.

No matter what level or how bad a picker is, they will have something you can learn from them.

Old Nellie wasn't there, but a 1937 RB-75 two serial numbers away from Reno's banjo was, an it will be coming in a show.

Charlie Cushman recently acquired an RB-75 nearly identical to Curtis McPeake's "Ole Betsy" and fortunately the Kalamazoo litter-mates were together again at banjothon. I asked Curtis to play his banjo for the recording, and he did! Here's a sample of both banjos, with Cushman taking licks in the front with his own RB-75, and last on Betsy.

...Not that there's anything wrong with that...

Chris was nice enough to lay his prewar down and play some tunes on the Posie.

This is Kevin Roop - he was the maker of the Sammy Shelor finger picks, until a couple years ago. I asked how many he'd made, "I don't know, thousands." Nice guy, good picker. He was playing with M.D. Mallory.

I have been looking back through the pictures and I notice that very few players actually look like they are enjoying themselves. I can only guess that they dislike bluegrass as much as I do and are just concentrating on trying to play faster than the player standing next to them. I assume the best player is the one who finishes first in bluegrass tunes, but it doesn't quite seem to work like that in most other music.

Ian,

Perhaps what you are noticing is the intense concentration on the part of these banjo players as they play bluegrass, which is by its nature highly instrumental. The musicianship required to play at the level of these players demands such concentration, unlike other, less sophisticated forms of music which may utilize the banjo. It's easy to grin all the time when you know you'll never have to go beyond the fifth fret.

DHoffmeyer - Posted - 02/15/2008:  20:27:31

I don't know about the concentration, I'm usually just trying to beat the mandolin player to the end
