Alright then. Ladies and gents, I bring you Doyle Lawson & the gang live from sunny Pescara, taped in 1985 from Rai-TV.
Here's the first song from the video, Julie Anne:

Thanks for the nice words. We played Pescara recently, and the promoter there told us he had the video of the DL&QS concert (which he had also promoted). I could never imagine it was already around!
That 1985 concert was awesome, and mixing it was fun (giving me the opportunity to record it on my Marantz Superscope portable hi-tech cassette recorder
). Doyle wasn't so pleased about the monitor mix though (the hall had a strange shape, and it was real hard to avoid feedback), those of you who have the show on CD (courtesy of yours truly via Wayne Holcomb) may notice that Doyle says something like "Silvio I can't hear a thing..."![]()
I imagine Dean is going to post more stuff from my amateur photographer years, and I tell you, it's a treat to see your old photos on a computer screen! ![]()

... and Charles Sawtelle hidden behind Sam... Man, do I miss Charles, the kindest soul in Bluegrass... That festival in Toulouse was great, lots of great bands and a unique atmosphere. We used to walk around downtown after the shows to look for food, but only found street vendors offering waffles and hot dogs and other assorted healthy items
. A mere 24 years ago almost to the day, so many things have changed, friends passed away, but I'm proud and happy I was there. I played a Gold Star, had lots of hair, my playing sucked in spite of having younger hands with no arthrosis... oh well, Dean, please keep posting before I get too sentimental... ![]()
BTW, it's almost 4 a.m., I'm just back from a gig which was REAL fun, my '36 (or maybe '37) -75 peeled paint, and even nostalgia cannot balance the fact that the sound I get now is miles above the sound I got in 1984. It must be called "experience", or something...

More from Silvio's archives:
Here's Sammy Shelor with his first prewar flat head, which he called "an RB-37" because it was an RB-12 pot, an RB-7 neck and an RB-18 flange. He bought the banjo in 1984.

I haven't added any images to this post in a while, so here goes! These are from the Aiken SC Bluegrass Festival May 9, 2008. I have tried to shoot in low light before, but this was the opposite! VERY strong back light, very hard to get the exposure right.....thank heaven for RAW format.
Our very own John Mark Batchelor with Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper.

John Mark doing his Carl Childers imitation......a bit out of focus though!
Nick Hornbuckle with John Reischman and the Jaybirds. Yep, two fingers, and he has an amazing style, if you haven't heard him you should.
Nick Hornbuckle with Trisha Gagnon in the background.
Nick again.

The Graves Mountain festival was this past weekend in Syria, Virginia. It is one of the very best! The Graves family make all who attend feel like guests in their home. And, as always, the music was fantastic.
Here are a few of the banjo players who were at Graves Mountain, starting with Ben Eldridge, Mr. Seldom Scene. Ben is playing his fine sounding Huber Lancaster.

When Dogwood gave me that strap. I tried the right shoulder but with this strap it feels so good this way. I still like the right side but this particular strap feels better on the left side to me.When something feels this good you go with it.![]()

Uh oh, with Dean watching, it's like trying to pick banjo with Earl in the audience. Yes, Dean, new camera body (wish other kinds of new bodies were available) but very old glass (and older eyes trying to focus).
Wish you could have been there to hear Kenny. The guy sitting next to me said, "Those notes are coming at me like a machine gun!"
Here's Dana Cupp with Bobby Osborne and Rocky Top X-Press, playing his Osborne Chief.

Whatever it is, the banjo is being supported by it and it has what looks like a velcro strap on the right side. Looks made for this task, but browsing around the web I didn't see anything like it.

Here is an old photo of Rebekah Weiler at age three. The photo was taken by her dad (notice the toilet plunger mic stand).
This photo was published a few years back in Banjo Newsletter.
Who knew back then that Rebekah would grow up to be a really fantastic old-time banjo player and entertainer?

That was a Randy Wood neck, made of Walnut with a put together pot assembly. The next season he put a Bella Voce Pattern cut from Abalone on the banjo and traded him out of the Wreath neck the next summer. I traded it to Clarence Hall and it was sold on a banjo and now is in Danville VA. Was a wonderful feeling neck, I've called the gentleman who owns it several times wanting to know if he would like to trade it. The neck has a lot of history
