My source for identifying "Sam" was Tom Isenhour, picker/historian/brother of my mentor Bob Isenhour (RIP), and he didn't know either.
Sorry, Fred

Sorry, Fred
Thanks for checking. It is not too important. I was really just curious about that "new" Gallagher guitar he was playing in the photos.
robbif - Posted - 09/20/2011: 05:24:58
You're welcome. I do think I remember that Sam was hawking the Gallaghers, but I don't remember exactly.
On a slightly OT subject, I remember in one of the recordings in my Landreth Collection frobbi.org/landrethcollection.html probably one of these frobbi.org/audio/landreth/Bean...ndex.html Doc ironically responds to someone in the audience (and I paraphrase), "Nothin' can beat the sound of this Martin, buddy."
KLandreth - Posted - 09/20/2011: 06:42:28
"Ain't never been a guitar built that'd touch a good Martin buddy..."

Amen buddy!

Fast forward to 1972, Circle album.
Merle Travis:- " Why, that guitar of yours rings like a bell ".
Doc:- " Yeah, Mr Gallacher made that one for me "
I loved the chat between tracks on the first album !
The next ones all sounded contrived, 'cause folks knew the tape was rolling, and may be used on the album.
p.s. I also think this should be made a Sticky topic....check out what Dean says on his original post........!!

Amen buddy!
I recently played Doc's original Gallagher "Ole Hoss" at the shop in Wartrace. I posted about it here: banjohangout.org/topic/215379
It has a big, dry, woody tone...very punchy...like the best old Martin D-18's I've played. It is a real cannon for flatpicking.
I can certainly see why he would have chosen it as as a great one for performing and recording.
I always imagined that in 1968 Doc might have been looking for something to replace his prized (and more valuable) Martin(s) for everyday use on the road.
Mr. Gallagher told me that Doc liked the sound of that particular G-50 and wanted it...I spite of a repaired side crack. It served him quite well for several years.
Thanks for sharing those recordings and photos! They are awesome!
robbif - Posted - 09/20/2011: 10:22:12
I wonder if we should spin this off into another topic, appropriately called "Doc's Guitar"! ;-)
jbalch - Posted - 09/20/2011: 12:02:33
That is probably enough about Doc's guitar...sorry to Hijack this thread....it is one of my all-time favorites. Thanks again for all the Photos!
"we now return to the regularly scheduled program in-progress."
I'll close with an old photo of my friend and fine banjo picker: David Emery. It is a newspaper clipping from about 1980. David is playing a converted Vega Little Wonder (the guitar in the photo is my 1975 Gallagher G-50)

While no where near the quality of the shots of Mr. Hoffmeyer I enjoyed seeing and tried to show many of the smiles of the banjo players at Bean Blossoms Uncle Pen Days Festival in
September of 2011.

That is actually only the second picture I've seen of Jessie Baker with Doyle from IBMA... I hung out with Jessie a whole lot at IBMA (I shared a room with his brother), and people kept going up to him and saying "Man, I got all these great pictures of you with Doyle", but I haven't seen 'em.
I laugh about that suit he wears, because he came up to my and Taylor's (his brother) room to iron it, and I noticed that it was the exact same suit that I had purchased about 2 weeks before - same brand, cut, three pieces, and all ![]()
Thanks for that really good picture of Jessie. He's one of my three favorite banjo pickers around today, and a heck of a nice guy, to boot.

From the first post by Dean Hoffmeyer (original psoter) of this now 53-pages long thread:
"Might be a short thread, but I've got enough to post for a couple weeks. Let's see 'em! Technical details can be listed too."
Nice, that Dean was wrong...

In re-visiting this wonderful thread for the um-teenth time, why are so many of the photos missing? Most replaced by the ubiquitous little blue square with a question mark?

I just sent several of you folks a note asking if i could use one of the photos you posted here. I hope that was ok, if not i apologize and you may surely let me know it was not OK if you feel that way. You can let me know it was ok too!

Here's a few I took this weekend of Eddie Adcock and Don Wayne Reno at Don Wayne' s house. Boy was I wore out after playing from about 7:00 pm on Friday till 5:00 am Saturday morning. Then picking Saturday night from about 7 pm to 5:00 am Sunday morning! But it was worth it!! One of the best weekends of my life!

Here's a few from Banjothon 2012 of Eddie and Don Wayne

Me, Eddie Adcock, and my buddy Joe Rose.

This was the first time Don Reno's Stelling and Don's "Ole Nellie" have been the same room in nearly 30 years! In these two pics he was playing someone else's banjo but he picked up Nellie after a few tunes and we had an impromptu Reno style workshop for the rest of the day. Good times!!

I think these pictures were taken shortly after Eddie Adcocks surgery and it is good to see him looking so well.

Fred,
The BNL cover with your picture is a
great cover isn't it. I ordered extra copies as I think it
will be a collectors item or someday I may find someone
who didn't get a copy but who would treasure one.

I'm occasionally privileged to accompany Mike Gregory on the bass banjo he made for me ("Frankenbanjo").
So are we a) sleeping? b) experiencing The Rapture of the Banjo? c) getting ready for a synchronized sneeze?
N.B.: The peghead between us belongs to our virtuoso guitar player -- but this isn't banjoandguitar hangout.

Here are some pictures of Larry Perkins at the John Hartford Festival in Bean Blossom, Indiana 2012. My pictures are a poor quality compared to many
posted here but I wanted to show Larry working as he played many sets and gave us some great music despite the fact he was in a good deal of
physical discomfort. I also wanted to show him playing barefoot on Bill Monroe's stage. IS NOTHING SACRED ANYMORE! (JOKE)
.
I also post this at a time when Larry is embarking upon a big project of writing a personal book about Earl Scruggs the man and the musician and
including in this project some previously unpublished music with Earl playing. We should all love this project. Here is the thread on it:
