Hey Dean,

you say "I believe JD has the Banger in Mark's picture.". Could you let us know why you say so? The neck looks like the one he's got the the Bob Rodgers RB75, FE board with L&B head with a straight Gibson logo. The resonator also looks like it has the back binding less wide than the front binding, as in quite a few 75s (however, I don't know if this particular 75 follows this "rule", maybe I should check out those pic of the BGAB where the 75 had Bob's strap on it...). C'mon buddy, let us know!

On a slightly different subject, there's a video of Longview on Y'allTube where JD plays a 3 (or 75) with a leaves and bows fingerboard: does any of you know what THAT banjo is? JD never was very fond of that inlay pattern, matter of fact Richard Keldsen got an original 5-string neck like that on his RB-3 that comes from one of JD's banjos.

No way, Hunter, the REAL experts are other people, some of them here on the HO. I just try to remember things I saw a precious few times, that's it. I've got an old 75 though .

Someone here on the HO posted about JD's banjos, said that he's got Frank Neat necks on the -3s and -75, and that The Banger now has a straight-grain maple neck: Dean, do you recognize this neck as the one in Mark's photo? Just curious....

I talked with JD before the show and it is not his 75. It was one of his 3's.

Here's the 75 up close-

Note the tailpiece cover is brassed in the middle, but the armrest brassing doesn't go out to the edge.

JD often calls the Banger the "Jimmy Martin" banjo, so if he said the one above is one of his 3's, who knows? Could be something with the new Blaylock Crowe ring in it. A fellow told me recently that JD had switched to playing Banger. "You have to play them."

Mark and Dean, you can't do this to me! I'm wasting my eyes and droolin' from studying your pictures about 3" from the screen... At any rate that's not the 75 for sure. Still wonder what that L&B 3 on the YouTube video was... It sounded... like JD!

Dean, I spoke with J.D. before the show Friday. It was his '35 -3 which
is a 20 hole flat head. It sure souded good. I watched the show with our fellow hangout member and friend Don Bryant.

If memory serves the reso on the solid tonering "banger" is is darker from years of smoky rooms and working in the good old days. IT is an animal it will not quit no matter how hard you hit it. I remember being at a festival way 100s of yards from the stage and the pa went down, no ricky, no tony, no sloane, you could hear that damn banjo like it was 10 feet away. SC

Dean

Thanks for the great thread and pictures, you are a master....

Couple of comments:

Greg Cahill's banjo in the pictures is a Kel Kroydon, Greg had hid under the bed for years....He has switched between a Blaylock and Huber ring. I worked on the banjo set up a little at Bean Blossom, it has the Huber in it now. Great banjo, Frank Neat neck.

JD's banjos......Frank Neat has been building necks for the different flatheads over the years, the way I understand the story, JD's will vary necks along the way. At BB, he was playing the 20 hole 3, it sounded incredible. As you might guess, JD gets some of the darkest Brazilian rosewood in his fingerboards. That quality of Brazilian is hard to come by today, but when Frank goes to the closet, it is there. As Steve pointed out, the Banger is .....well, the one time I was fortunate enough to play it.....the loudest most impactful flathead I have ever heard or played.......STRONG.....

Keep up the great pictures, guys and gals.

David

So is Banger the one with a full FE neck? Or this '35 -3 had it way back when and it has the Reno pattern now? AND since we're talking about JD's banjos, Banger and this '35 -3 are supposedly the ones he used on the Rounder 0044, right? Does anyone knows what on which song? I've always wondered about it...

I know, I know, this is a photo thread, the subject I brought out should belong to a different thread, but you know... Here on the HO we even have threads about a tone ring or a banjo with more than 50% of the posts talking about eyebrow hair, dogs, cars, bikes, heat at a certain festival and what have you...

Mark, save the hi-res of those JD photos for reference. Kind of geeky I know, but.....

I loathe the day this thread gets too many pages, locked and disappears, so I'll save a post by running an edit here.

I'll save the RAW files Dean. LOCKED or DISAPPEARS.........say it ain't so! This threads existence has inspired me to take the Canon to festivals that I might not have in the past. It might have even made me a better photographer, but not a better picker! When Dean sets the bar so high with his images it can only inspire you to get better. Kinda like slowing J.D.'s breaks down, humbling to say the least!

Thanks,

Mark

Hi all,

i'm just come back from North Wales Bluegrass Festival at Conwy where i was playing with my band the Bononia Grass.
There i have had the BIG pleasure to meet Mr Greg Cahill for the first time. Men, he is an amazing player !!! And a fine person with a lot of humor, i have had a great time with him.
Besides the other band musicians are incredible pickers too.
Here some pics from their band workshop where Greg is playing his great sounding Huber with a maple pot and a mahogany neck , hope you'll enjoy them.

I'm not a professional photographer... but my job has me handle a camera on occasion, so i know that you've got to take a million photographs for every good one.... so... at Bela Fleck in Mobile Alabama earlier this year, i sat on the front row and took about a thousand photographs... got about 250 ok shots... here's some of the good ones... (I've got a ton of great ones of Victor Wooten, Jeff Coffin, and Futureman... but I'm sticking with the theme of the thread... banjo players)

Three types of photos... Bela with the band... Bela and his instruments... and "artsy" photos.

Here's an old one of Tony, taken at the Owen Sound Folk Festival many years ago.

And Curley Boy Stubbs (Paul Mills) on the same stage on the same day playing the 12-string guitar that Grit Laskin made for Stan Rogers (I think) with the late Gambel Rogers' left hand behind him:

Folks, you need to keep and eye on Weston Stewart (pickiningit on pg 39 of this thread). He'll be in the who's who of banjo players if he keeps going like he is. He just won first place at Uncle Dave Macon Days in the Bobby Thompson Bluegrass Banjo competition and the competition is tough there. Pretty good for a young man of 17. Congratulations Weston!

Silvio

You are correct, eventhough I did not take the picture....that is the 3, Tony acquired through Sonny Osborne, years ago. I think early 80's. It surfaced in Greenfield Indiana, when Frank Neat was still living in central Indiana. It started as a wreath plectrum. Frank built the neck for it at that time and Sonny brokered the sale, if my memory serves me correct. Frank acquired the banjo for $750.00 and some boot.

Most of the story is told by Sonny or TOny in the MASTERS OF THE FIVE STRING BANJO interviews. The anolagy used by Sonny went something like "If you are going to be the best carpenter, then you buy the best tools".....Tony bought the banjo. end of story.
