Can someone please shed some light?

Yeah, and it appears to have a set of Cheat-a-Keys on it.

Just what Ron is talking about-
Here's another of the Grascal's new banjo player. If you've heard Kristin's new CD, the track "Freedom Park" was named that because it seemed to match the vibe of where this photo was shot - Freedom Park in Charlotte.
This thread has 128,000 looks and still moving along
Minimizing new posts on this thread, I'll add here that Bill's banjo on the previous page is his R&T top tension Bill Keith model banjo - the "cloud" banjo as some still call it.
I think once this thread is locked somewhere down the road, I could always link to it in my signature, but I doubt we'll ever see this as a sticky. Eric told me years ago that I was the first person to ever donate money to the hangout. I know it was a tiny amount then, but I hope some of this thread has been enjoyable and helpful without being too much of a pain.

Here are some more photos, sent by Silvio via Cliff Avery who shot these at the HSBF in San Francisco this year.

Silvio also sent some HSBF photos shot by Pavel Homola
King Scrugg

Silvio writes, "Please notice, in the last of the pics, that it's THE GRANADA that Earl is holding, with the gold plated tone ring, and that the pot sits real low in the resonator, as if it had the short '50s L-brackets."

So, let's take a closer look inside the old banjo courtesy of Greg Rich. These were taken prior to the Rich era refinish at Gibson.

Jim Mills and a full-res look at his Huber neck. An additional note here that Steve Huber sells those pre-war style truss rod covers.

Hi Fred,
Thanks for your message -- it was a pleasure to meet you, too. And I appreciate all your efforts 'filming' our performance.
The banjo is a Bill Keith model top-tension, made by Rich and Taylor. It's basically a Gibson Mastertone clone, but this one has a Huber tone-ring in it. You're welcome to post this info online.
Have a happy Thanksgiving!

A couple things about the banjo that Earl played at this year's HSBF: it's obviously THE Granada, gold plated ring and all. Meaning he's not afraid to fly with it (in its Price case, but I suspect anybody would allow Mr. Scruggs to carry his banjo onboard...). But there's one other thing that I've noticed: the pot sits real low in the resonator, as if it still had the short '50s L-brackets. Which goes along with a theory that I agree with (smaller opening between bottom of the rim and resonator = enhanced low frequencies) ![]()

Not Dave Evans. I've known Dave since he was a teenager sneaking in to play at the Astro Inn, and years later I played mandolin on 3 or 4 shows with Dave when he needed a fill-in. Nope, not Dave.
.
Here's Dave at the Astro in 1968.
.
I think the consensus when the question originally came up was that Dave Garrett, who played with George Winn's band, is the mystery picker.

Howdy Frank,
I'll chime in and agree - this pic appears to be a young
Dave Garrett. Funny you recall his working for George
Winn as I only recall him working for Chief Powatan(?)
back in his Richmond, Va days. But Lol, to be fair, a good
banjo player (who wants to work, etc) will usually work
with just above every good group in a town at one time or
another ...
