Hey Jim (Flatthead),

What do you know about that banjo that Crowe is playing in those pics with the "Live in Japan" configuration of the New South (minus Jimmy Gaudrea +Wendy Miller?)? That was the banjo he was playing a lot when I first started taking lessons at the String. That's what made me want to get a flying eagle banjo...

..... I believe the unknown banjo player could be Jim Brooks.........he and His brother, Harold, played in a band called the Tarheel Travelers, ( in NC), for several years.....he might have been with Alex and Olla Belle Reed and they were playing at Bean Blossom in 1968....just a guess...peace

I checked with Dave Garrett (of Richmond, VA), and he is indeed the "unknown" banjo picker. He was at Bean Blossom with George Winn, and Mr. Monroe asked him to be a part of the workshop.

How about another photo of Vic Jordan to bump this thread back to the top. This was taken during Carlton Haney's "Bluegrass Music Camp" at the 1968 Berryville Bluegrass Festival. Performers sat on apple crates in the field in front of the stage every day that week and conducted an informal jam session with anyone who wanted to join in. Hard to believe that was 40 years ago...I know what I'm doing tonight...where are those old reel-to-reel tapes...



Oh yeah...for those of you who were not born yet when I took this photo ...that's Kenny Baker on fiddle, Vic Jordan on banjo, Monroe sitting on the apple crate playing mandolin, Roland White on guitar. James Monroe out of sight on bass, and Carlton Haney sitting next to Monroe.

If you noticed that this photo suddenly improved in quality after it was posted...thanks for that magic go to Dean Hoffmeyer.

Here's a shot from New Years weekend, 1966. That's half of Richard Green on the left, Monroe, Lamar Grier, Pete Rowan &
James, taken at the Outpost in Columbus, Ohio.
It's a pretty crummy shot as all I had with me was a faux-Instamatic <sigh> It was a rough part of town!

'Little Nemo' is pretty good, but I pack my gear with 'The Incredibles'. This is behind the Rooster stage (main stage) at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in San Fancisco 2007. Laurie Lewis singing and you probably know those other folks.

This guy knows way more about banjos than I do. It's Bill Evans with Megan Lynch of Rustler's Moon.

The photo was taken at WSM Studio by Paul Breidenbach and John Hotze. It dates Summer 1955. That's all I know about it.
Frank might have some more info.

Ken and Matteo suggested I might have some info on the two vintage Opry photos above... Lester & Earl, and Bill Monroe.
Sorry, chaps... I'm in the dark with both of them. Doug Hutchens might be able to help with the Monroe shot.
And Earl or Seck might remember the F&S details.
I'd say they were both taken around the same time as the backdrop is similar in each... "Soltice" banner & "...Saturday Night."

Don't mean to hijack the thread. This is very strange. I was looking for some photographs last night and found a nice one of Tim Spradlin when he was working with Earl Taylor and Jim McCall in Canada in 71 and one of Chris Warner, Vernon Derrick and Jimmy Martin from 69 and thougt how much these photographs might mean to Tim and Chris. For those of us who have been on stage the folks snapping the photographs have no idea what we would treasure copies of them.
Not long ago Ken Landreth sent me a copy of a shot of me with the Tex Logan and the Lilly Brothers playing bass and I had wished so many times I had a shot of that show and Ken made my dream come true. .
Possibly we need to begin a "share" thread.

As to who is in the Monroe shot, is that a young Jackie Phelps on guitar and I'm not sure on the banjo yet.

Hey thanks Skip. A fellow woodbutcher. Paisano! As for wasting time, my advice is to just quit your job and play music all day. Last night I photographed Mike Seeger playing solo in Berkeley. He's a great musician and a hellava nice guy, too. I like that old-timey stuff. Here's a few quick pics.


You can play a vegetable if you try. Sheep gut strings, too. Baaah that hurts!

I've shot production stills for a film documentary that's being made about The New Lost City Ramblers. Not finished yet, but keep an eye out for it. The filmmaker is Yasha Aginski and it's being done through Arhoolie Records which is right up the street here.
