Like Nick Hornbuckle, with John Reischman and the Jaybirds. He is a phenomenal picker. Saw them at Delaware Valley BG festival this weekend, and it took me a while to notice he was picking with only his thumb and index finger. They're a great band, which I knew little about before this weekend...

It's a Hatfield Buck Creek model.

Thanks to SJL for that info - he's putting together a photo album of Hatfield players on his Hangout homepage: banjohangout.org/myhangout/pho...bumid=915 .

Here's the thread where John talks about his new banjo: banjohangout.org/forum/topic.a..._ID=91997

(Edited to say: Oops, I see that Dean and Arthur himself have already answered your question.)

In all honesty I don't think it could be in the hands of a better young picker. John's picking is great.

That "Quadruple Banjo Blugrass Spectacular" pic is an interesting slice of the modern banjo spectrum: prewar Gibson conversion, Nechville (?), Stealth, and Deering. Curious.

I even got to pick a tune with em! Not on stage of course They really are nice people. Real privilege to get a good bluegrass band up here to perform on such an occasion. They sure are a busy bunch. I coulda sat there and talked BG with them for hours....and I did

Are you talkin about his Huber or his Gibson (I think it's a Gibson)?

i think the same guy sold him the huber, but that is definetly the "gibson" that the guy, Mike Tweedy is trying to sell. he has two and they are real close. i don't know the story behind his huber, but the "gibson" he has in the pics are a florentine neck with checkerboard binding;maple of course; but the tonering is a huber i beleive. do you know if it is tj's or if he was testing it out? i know he wanted that one pretty bad-i don't know much about his huber.......thanks for posting the pics and i hope this all makes sense-if it does'nt just say so and i'll reply asap!!!!

I think it was his. He used it when we picked, I used the Huber. I think it was a mahog model. But yes, the Gibson definitely lookes like a Florentine neck. He definitely uses the Huber more often, judging by the wear. I think he must use them for different songs, the Gibson more for lead (wear marks strictly at the bridge) and the Huber for more backup/melodic (wear all the way up the string). He has em set up pretty loose with both heads around a G#, maybe a bit below.

On the resonator of the Gibson I noticed what looked to be checkerboard binding around the outside. Didn't snap a pic, now I know I should've. The two banjos sound pretty much the same, but most of that's probably TJ. Probably a Huber, very deep and punchy. He sure can pull some tone out of em! I bought their recent CD while I was there, Big Pine, and it's great. Sounds like the Huber for the cuts I think. I just recently found out the bugger has MySpace and he didn't tell me. He has a couple tracks up on there, myspace.com/tjdoerfel. Using the Huber for the cuts on the CD, seems to support your theory about the Gibson just being on loan for a while, but what the hell do I know it was probably the Gibson on there anyway.

I didn't get as many pictures in the exhibition hall as I thought, but here are a few.

Here is Paul Hopkins playing Spinning Wheel on his personal LouZee. The new DP Hopkins banjos are very striking.

Everybody would ask, "Did you see Bill Keith? Have you seen Bill Keith?" He's in both these pictures- over Paul's shoulder (above) and below with our friends John and Barry from Banjo.com.
