Thank you for your appreciation.
Martin is a long time friend, and his warm music accompanied the first days after the birth of my son Davide, 6 years ago.
Even if he doesn't play anymore in a stable band contest, I'm still amazed of how creative and solid is his picking.
I whish he lived closer to me! My picking would improve greatly :-)
Ciao!

I believe that fellow's name is Eric Royer. He's even got a CD or two out.
Most homestyle pickers these days get a multitrack recording setup and record their instruments one-at-a-time.
Eric takes the opposite approach: he plays them ALL at once!

This came from the Nashville trip, though it technically may fall outside of this thread - perhaps these guys in Kalamazoo were banjo players too...

**I think some may have seen this before, but it was new for me. The hump on the neck at the right is actually part of his apron or his tie showing behind the neck. His watch is on his left wrist, so I doubt the picture is flopped.

Dean, I'm speechless. That for me is one of the rarest most banjo-meaningful moments I've ever seen in banjo history. Banjos from the golden era of production, being made and inspected. Those guys whether they know it or not will be remembered by the wonderful instruments they made, whether they knew it or not.

Great pic alright---and all those rims! The guy in the middle LOOKS like he's playing the banjo he's holding. The guy on the right seems to be sighting along a 5-string neck, although it'd be a lefty banjo.
Any idea of the function of the hand-cranked roller press thingie at the end of the workbench?

The neck is much too short to be a standard 5 string.

Oh good grief, Dean. . . that photo of the old Gibson factory makes me weak in the knees! That's only the second pic I've ever seen showing prewar Gibson banjo production. . . the other one is in Walter Carter's Gibson book and it's a closeup of one guy putting together a tube-and-plate banjo.
What do you know about the background of this photo? I can't tell what kind of banjo the guy in the middle is holding. . . is it a fiddle-shaped peghead? It obviously has an archtop ring. Are those tone rings hanging from the ceiling, and rims stacked up on the floor?

About the old pic at the Kalamazoo factory, Dean says: "The hump on the neck at the right is actually part of his apron or his tie showing behind the neck. His watch is on his left wrist, so I doubt the picture is flopped.". My opinion: the hump on the neck is one finger (or two) of the worker's left hand. Also, the head diameter on that banjo is a lot smaller than 11". So again IMO that banjo is a banjo-uke, or a small tenor (provided they made small tenors at Gibson...). What do you say, Dean?

Here's a photo of a banjo player on the west coast that some of you might recognize. Warren Hellman puts together the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco every year. To top it off, he foots the bill and lets everyone in for free. Just a few hundred thousand music lovers.
I was one of the staff photogs this year and met a certain Italian bluegrass group whose banjo player hangs out around here. Hi Silvio.

The roller at the end of the bench in the Gibson shop is a sheet metal roller. In tin shops they called it a stovepipe roller. The top roller can be opened so the piece can be slippef off.Why is it in the Gibson shop? Well I just don't know. But iI'm sure they had ause for it or it wouldn't be outfront like that.

This thread will soon get locked because of the size, so I only post when I have a new batch of pictures- and this one deserves a post.
From Silvio Ferretti's collection.
"I'm sending you my photo of a banjo player, taken 1982 at the Nitchie house. He sure was an enthusiastic picker, and I know a lot of us younger ones owe him - and his family - a lot. When I took this pic he had just told me he wanted to do a cover story about me on BNL, I told him he was crazy as I was a terrible banjo player (true, of course). So it took him another 8 or 9 years to finally put me on that cover."

Here's one of one of the best banjo pickers that you probably have never heard of, Al Osteen. He has taught numerous folks the five string around these parts, including Kristin Scott Benson. He is the one that is presently teaching our very on Reid Toth (Banjo Diva)........she makes mention of him quite often in the fine Banjo Newsletter articles that she writes.
