Is there any pictures of Lizzy Long....I've seen her many times in West Virginia, I think she is known more for fiddling. She's Little Roy's Daughter and I've been told that she is heavily mentored by EARL!!! She's a good banjo player. Not bad to look at either.

MAN!!! I want to be in that girls place.

I just logged onto Dean's website and went through the "People" section of his web portfolio. Wonderful work. Especially exquisite are the two black and white photo essays that conclude the section. Poignant and sensitive, they are photojournalism at its finest. Click the link and take a look; this is photography not to be missed.

Yep.
It is with some good fortune I got to get J.D. on stage. Two years ago, I'd planned to go when he was there, but I had the flu on the day, and couldn't. Last Sunday, getting ready to go, I dislocated my shoulder and thought I'd miss him again. But I put it back in, took some ibuprofen and drove on down. I iced it that night, and it seems to be working again.

Here's what I learned by watching JD from the front row. It wasn't the bridge or the tailpiece or the tone ring or the neck wood or old picks that makes JD sound like JD. He stands up there and plays music, tastefully with great tone always. If I'd handed him ANY well-setup banjo, he'd likely sound about the same. Barring the use of a terrible banjo, it is always the human holding the banjo which has the greatest affect on the sound coming out the front. Admittedly, there are variations that will affect tone, but JD is proof - it is all in the hands.

Once again I want to post my sincere thanks to everyone who's posted pictures on this thread. It has to be my favorite of all time threads and I often find myself going back through the entire thing from time to time.

I must say too... that last photo Dean posted of J.D. is likely one of the best I've ever seen. It captures everything I admire about Mr. Crowe... and Mr. Hoffmeyer.

I love living in Virginia. I met Derek Easter several months ago, and we picked a little in a Lexington, VA truck stop parking lot. Not a single person looked twice, just like WELL, THAT'S NORMAL. My kids and his played around and it was a good day. And Derek CAN PICK!!!!

Dean's talents are universally recognized. Here's an excerpt from an article appearing in today's (3/15) Richmond Times-Dispatch:

"Richmond Times-Dispatch photographer Mark Gormus captured two first-place awards and two second places in the Virginia News Photographers Association annual competition. * * * *

Dean Hoffmeyer of the Times-Dispatch won the illustration category."

Agreed 110%. Ditto Earl or any other of the greats. Goes the other way, too...you can own the world's finest banjo, but without the chops, so what.

I learned that when I was still a really green player--listening to Alan Shelton play an acquantance's RB-100 backstage after a Jim & Jesse show. That banjo never sounded as good before nor since.

Well, well, I just received my issue of Bluegrass Unlimited and our very own Dean Hoffmeyer's work is all over it! Front, back and the entire Grasstowne shoot. Way to go Dean! I knew there were big bucks in Bluegrass, just didn't know it was in photography! :-)

Oh yes, that latest pic of J.D. should be the new GHS add....you need to pitch that one to them Dean.

Thanks,

Here's some fairly "decent" pickers. How many can you name? Sure would have liked to have seen this show!

No matter what level or how bad a picker is, they will have something you can learn from them.

Lol, I'll take a stab at it: From left to right:
Jack Hicks, Kenny Baker (partially hidden),
Vic Jordon, Don R, Tex Logan (partially hidden),
Curly Ray Cline (partially hidden), Ralph S and
Paul Warren. No clue as to the mandolin player on
the far right.

I was there and took the picture, and the show was great.

That's Kenny Baker's head behind Vic Jordan and to the right of Jack Hicks. Tex Logan is behind Don Reno; Curly Ray Cline is between Reno and Stanley, and Paul Warren is behind Stanley. I think the hand holding the mandolin on the right belongs to Bill Monroe.

Frank,

The unidentified banjo player in your photo from Bean Blosson 1968 is unquestionably DAVE GARRETT from Richmond, VA (do you agree, DbBanjo and Gary Lee?). Dave won the Virginia state banjo championship at least 3 times (each time in a different decade). He used to play on the Old Dominion Barn Dance back when Flatt & Scruggs, the Stanley Brothers, Mac Wiseman, etc. all played there. He played for many years with George Winn and the Bluegrass Partners and with Chief Powhatan and his Bluegrass Braves. He was featured on the cover of the April 1992 issue of Banjo Newsletter. Dave can play straight-ahead Scruggs, single-string and "chromatic" styles. He's a fine person who has always been willing to help fledgling pickers.

Fantastic!! Frank, would you share with us more of your wonderful pics?? While we're talking of Don Reno, here's another good one:

According to the date, guitar player should be Jim Eanes. Of course Benny on fiddle, Don on banjo and Bill on mandolin. Anyone identifies the bass player?

Ahh... George Winn. Tall chap... big hat... mandolin player. He was at Bean Blossom in 1968. There are a few shots of his band among the proof sheets from that festival. As soon as I have a chance I'll scan one that shows the banjo player, who is also wearing a large hat... and to my tired old eyes it's difficult to tell via the tiny proof sheet image. But I'm satisfied from your account above that Dave Garrett is the UBP. Stay tuned.
--Thanks, Frank
