OK Arthur, here is one from this summer. Carrie Hasler and Hard Rain's banjo picker, Zach Gilmer. He is 17 and picks real well.......man they start um' young! Note....or excuse, the lighting was real bad, also had to shoot at 3200 iso. I bet Dr. Hoffmeyer could have handled it though!

I agree. This is one of the best threads. Thanks to everyone who has contributed. I'm happy to have shared some photos above and have some online.
Since the news of Allen Shelton's leukemia diagnosis came out a couple weeks ago, you can see some photos of him in this topic... banjohangout.org/topic/159981

I was just looking back at the great pictures in this topic and saw Rounder_0044's photo of Al Osteen, posted last November. At that time I hadn't looked through and scanned my slides. Here's my photo of Al from
Union Grove 1968...
From the same series, here's one of Winnie Winston:

WHEW! I'm slow getting this stuff up. Here are some from IBMA
Sweden's G2, with Jens Koch playing banjo at the Ryman. He is a terrific young musician, and he's playing a Yates RS model.
Your IBMA banjo player for 2009 is Kristin Scott Benson.

Yesterday I drove down to Wilmington, Ohio, to attend an all-day benefit concert for Dale Vanderpool
and Gerald Evans, both of whom are fighting cancer and are thus facing huge medical bills. Gerald
was not feeling up to attending, but Dale was there - despite the chemo treatments he looked
good and seemed to be doing well. He performed with Don Rigsby and Midnight Call, and did his
usual superb job on the banjo.
The line up included a few other not-half-bad banjo pickers, as the photos below show, and consisted
of Blue & Lonesome, Lost & Found, Melvin Goins and Windy Mountain, Joe Mullins and the Radio Ramblers,
The Wildwood Valley Boys, Larry Stephenson, J.D. Crowe & The New South, Don Rigsby & Midnight Call,
and The Grascals, plus a few special guests, including Larry Cordle and Sonny Osborne.
Sonny didn't perform of course, but he did come out and introduce The Grascals, and then spent some
time at their record table, visiting and signing autographs. Even though he didn't play, it was great
to see him out and about, and to be able to stop by and say hello.

J.D. Crowe

Kenny Ingram was playing with Larry Stephenson (with Josh Williams guesting
on guitar).

Fred - that was a great shot of Al Osteen playing at Union Grove. I didn't meet Al until the early 70's when he owned a music store in Greenville. I guess he used to come over to Clemson and play with some of you guys (Bob Isenhour, Mike Nicolea (sp?), Ritchie ?, etc.) but I don't remember seeing or meeting him. He is still around these neck of the woods, but I don't seem to ever run into him. Great banjo player in my opinion!!!!!!!

Well, here's something new - kind of.
Ron Stewart playing in Ashland, Va. with the recently-formed Boxcars. His banjo is a new model Ron Stewart Yates with the simplified inlay.
Sharp-eyed Dr. Ferretti has spotted the second banjo across the stage- that's John Bowman's top tension. He and Ron trade off on banjo for a few songs.

Dean, what's that sunburst / speed neck job lying agains the wall, behind the string bass (in the photo)?
mastertone250 - Posted - 03/07/2010: 19:29:14
looks like John Bowmans Top Tension RB-18, look close and see the Amber Tuning Buttons and the big peg head. John Bowman Picked an RB-18 with that gospel group he used to be with.

I held that top tension in my hands one time at a concert.......it's one heavy gold plated wonder, sounds mighty good too.

Not a very big picture, but it gets bigger if you click on it. How do I make it bigger in the post?

However, there is one thing missing (in my opinion at least). There are no pictures of my personal hero John Hartford. Can anyone oblige?
