When I started this 'our pictures" thing 5 years ago this week, I never expected 195,000 views later we'd still be adding to it; what a great collection of posts! But this thread is about the PICTURES, so here are some recent works off 4x5 film. I should be clear that a lot of these are just tests before I kick off my first big 4x5 project. First some camera details - 1953 Speed Graphic with a 1943 Aero Ektar lens:

This is Gene Knight his RB-3 Wreath, The Willie Bivens

A Granada in good hands

A gold RB-75 and its owner

Gosh does this bring back memories. Back in the early '60s, summers I worked in a small photographer's portrait studio, and he had a 4x5 Speed Graphic that I used whenever I wanted to...don't know how old it was, but it easily could have been as old as yours...about 1967 the studio burned to the ground, so I imagine the Speed Graphic went with it...

At last year's Clearwater Fest, my GF and I were at one of the small tents for a group sing. This old dude carrying a beat up banjo walked up, sat next to me and started singing. The group brought him to the center of the circle and he joined a young guy playing banjo and singing along.

It was pretty cool singing along with one of my heros. I think Pete Seeger had more fun than anybody else there, too!

I have often disagreed with Pete Seeger's politics but have always loved his passion, sincerity, and integrity. A great picture: the smile on his face tells it all. It may have been from a cell phone but it is great. Thanks for posting.

I was lucky enough to see Pete in a little tent in 2008 at the local historical society's strawberry festival.
He was really working the crowd! Here's the video eastfishkillhistoricalsociety....er-l.html

Like his politics or not, since we live in the area, there's a major intersection where pro- and anti- war groups peacefully stand on diagonal corners. And there, on a cold winter day, will be Pete with his guitar!

Fred,
Thanks so much for posting his show. 89 years young and still tapping the toe! You could tell how much he wanted to throw back the head and hit the high notes like he used to. The voice may not be there but the enthusiasm is heart warming. It made me think back to Pete Seeger in my life: first when Folk Music was the mainstream and he was one of the main men, his group the Weavers, maybe the precursor to Peter, Paul & Mary, his banjo book - didn't he demonstrate a lot of ways to use the instrument and didn't he make some of us feel dumb because we couldn't look at his tab and just play FMB, finally his Rainbow shows with Ralph and Carter and with Johnny and June Cash that are now out on dvd.

I just felt an enormous respect for watching one so true to himself on that show.

Thanks again for posting this.
Ken

Can't let this thread get archived!

Yesterday I went out to the Apple Blossom Bluegrass Festival in Winchester, Virginia, primarily to see the Lynn Morris Band reunion.  As I'm sure many if not most of you know, Lynn one of the leading female singers in bluegrass during the 1990s, winning IBMA's Female Vocalist of the Year award three times in that decade.  She was also an excellent clawhammer banjo player, and was the first woman to win the Winfield Banjo Championship. With of her husband Marshall Wilborn on bass and such luminaries as Tom Adams, Ron Stewart, Jesse Brock, David McLaughlin, and Stuart Duncan on the other instruments, her band was one of the most popular and critically acclaimed groups from its founding in 1988 to its disbanding in 2003.  It was in that year that Lynn suffered a devastating stroke after undergoing routine knee surgery, leaving her with an inability to speak and impaired right side muscle control, meaning should could neither sing nor play banjo and guitar. After years of therapy she has made a great deal of progress and has regained much of her ability.  Aside from a brief appearance at the 2006 SPGMA convention, where she accepted Grand Masters Gold Award, yesterday's show as, to my knowledge, the first time she had performed in public since her stroke.  Accompanying her were four former members of the band - Tom Adams on guitar, Ron Stewart on banjo, Jesse Brock on mandolin, and of course Marshall Wilborn on bass.

Lynn and Marshall had made it clear that this was a one-time special occasion, not the beginning of Lynn's return to professional music.  As much progress as she has made over the past several years, it is also clear that she has not recovered fully from the effects of the stroke, and - by her own admission - probably never will.  Despite all that, she and the band put on a great show, and it was wonderful to see Lynn back on stage. The highlight for me was hearing her sing "Mama's Hand", which she dedicated to the song's author and her "dear friend" Hazel Dickens, who of course died just ten days ago.  Throughout the set, there was a palpable sense of love, good will, and encouragement from the crowd, which gave her at least three standing ovations.

Below are a some photos of Lynn and the band.  I'll post a few of the other festival acts later tonight.

Some more photos of the Apple Blossom Festival.

Ron Stewart, with the Boxcars

Jason Davis, with Junior Sisk and Ramblers Choice

Lloyd Douglas, with Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper

Until yesterday I was not familiar with Lloyd Douglas.  He has evidently has filled in with Flamekeeper several times before - indeed, there is a photo of him with the band from February 2007 on page 14 of this thread.   I really enjoyed his playing.

Thank you, Dean.  I appreciated your report on the BluegrassBlog.

I just realized that the first sentence of my post - about not letting this thread get archived - is a bit unnecessary, since instead of a two-and-a-half-month gap between it and the previous post, there is only a ninety minute gap.  Due to various technical difficulties it took me a long time to get the photos into my post, and by the time I did you had posted your photo of Lloyd.  (Obviously that's a minor point, but everything is relative - it's all I can do to refrain from asking the moderators to lift the 15-minute revision rule and let me fix the three glaring typos in my post.  That's what happens when you come from a family of English teachers, writers, and editors.)

We must have been standing at about the same location while photographing Flamekeeper's performance.  I was sitting over on the middle of the right side, but for about three songs in every set I would head over to the left corner in front of the stage to get a better photo angle, trying while doing so to keep out of the way of the real photographers, who were often also in that spot.  I didn't realize you were one of them. Sorry I missed the opportunity to introduce myself at some point during the day.

Yes, and I do miss hearing him on the banjo.  But I am glad he was able to switch roles, and is still out there creating such great music.  It did strike me during the show that the band featured two artists whose careers had been sidetracked, to one degree or another, by neurological problems.

When you add Ron Stewart to the mix, I guess the band had three banjo players on stage.  Actually four at one point, when Bill Emerson made his guest appearance for one song. Some of them were just playing the wrong instruments...

Lloyd Douglas lives in Alpena Michigan and played with Jessie McReynolds for a long time. I have known him for years and him and I started picking almost at the same time. He's alot younger than I am and I remember him lugging that old RB250 around when he was 4 feet tall. I have a picture of him and I playing at the Salt River festival in 1983 or so. I'll try to find it.

Your picture are fine! I Just clicked on them to enlarge! Great photos!

However, if you want the larger version in a post, go to your album, click on the image thumbnail, this brings you to the medium sized version... right click on that image and select "compy link". Come back here, and select the "image" icon in the post editor. Paste the image link into the "URL" box, and the large version will show up in the post.

Does anyone know the guitar player wearing a coyboy hat in this photo?  He is identified as "Sam."  The same fellow in in another photo from this series.

He was playing an apparently brand new Gallagher guitar.  That would have been a very early one too.  I think Doc Watson may have picked out "Ole Hoss" from the guitars J.W. and Don had at Union Grove in 1968.

just curious....
