Well, we've got posters all over, and with Mike M covering the west coast, we're set!
Here's Tim Newcomb of Mill Run playing on April 25 in Ladysmith at Mr. Bs Park. EDIT- He's playing a style 3 wreath, which is a 1934 tb-3 conversion with a Huber ring and Frank Neat neck. As Silvio points out, Tim keeps an Intelli tuner on his capo. The banjo sounded great.

Dean, what has Tim Newcomb got on his banjo neck, is that an Intelli tuner clipped to the capo?... Wonderful shot, BTW ![]()

Here's an old photo of the Waller-Emerson-Gaudreau-Yates version of the Country Gents from the Culpeper, Virginia bluegrass festival in 1970. Bill Emerson is playing "Flint Hill Special".

Here are some of J.D. taken at a Bluegrass Album Band concert. I didn't notice until I scanned the photos that J.D.'s strap says "B. J. Rogers". Does this refer to the calfskin head brand or was J.D. playing a borrowed RB-75?

DHoffmeyer - Posted - 04/28/2008: 07:53:48
That's the 75 he borrowed from Bob Rogers, which he now owns.

Here's one of Alan Munde, who's either trying to calm down all of the groupies who are clamoring for him, or who's being robbed at gunpoint...I can't remember which:
Here are some of Alan and the Country Gazette from 1973:

My foggy memory tells me that this was an original flathead pot that Alan played before he converted to using (and endorsing) Stellings. Anyone have a clearer memory of the details of his "pre-stelling" banjo? I know he sold it in about 1975...who has it now? ....KL
UPDATE: Alan emailed to remind me that this banjo had a conversion pot that Gary Price assembled, it was not an original flathead....obviously my foggy aging neurons timed out again....dang. He also mentioned that this is the banjo he used on the Country Gazette Don't Give Up Your Day Job and the Live albums.

I love it...almost a whole page of banjo players wearing their banjo straps correctly...!
silvioferretti - Posted - 05/01/2008: 12:11:55
Ken...
You don't know how bad it feels to be FORCED by your back to switch to the immoral two-shoulder strap wearing... I feel like I'm in good company after all (JD, Sonny, Earl...) but it still feels kind of awkward having to do those contortions to wear the strap instead of just slipping it up the right shoulder. And taking the banjo off is even worse!... Dang...![]()

its uncomfortable to wear my strap on one shoulder.

MikeMphoto - Posted - 05/04/2008: 19:46:08
Throw my vote in for the one shoulder strap config. also. The first wooden thing with strings that I played was classical guitar and you just sat there. No strap, no dancing either. They I started playing the Mexican son jorocho instruments and those are traditionally played standing with the strap over one shoulder. Now I prefer that to over the neck with everything. Cameras too.
Pictures. I got a few more. Dr. Ralph Stanley was in town for the weekend and I covered his performance for the California Bluegrass Association. It was an honor to meet him and we had a nice talk. Here's a couple of pics.

That face looks familiar.
Hold 'em back, that instrument is out of control!
It's almost like a big wooden banjo. James Shelton sure knows his way around a steel string guitar.

OK...morning quiz...who can name this budding bluegrass banjo player? (Hint: The photo was taken at the Galax Fiddlers Convention in 1966.)

Yep, looks like George, headed to a C chord!

OK...you've made it through Round 1...it is George Gruhn.
Now the Bonus Round...who's banjo is he playing...(you guys may have to consult your 'old-time' buddies here....)
UPDATE...It is not George Pegram's banjo..or Cullen Galyean's banjo (Cullen had two banjos in those days...the RB-11 that he sold to Charles Hawks in the mid 60s and an RB-100 that's pictured on the Atlantic Album of Galax music.)

If I've stumped Jimmy...I've done something...
George Pegram: in 1966 he was playing a nice RB-00...so that's not it
Cullen Galyean: In the mid 60s Cullen had two banjos...the RB-11 that he sold to Charles Hawks when Charles started playing with the Mtn Ramblers...and an RB-100...so that's not it.
Kyle Creed always played some version of a banjo he'd made (or converted), and this one is clearly a factory Orpheum...so that's not it.
The banjo George is playing belonged (at that time) to Mac Benford of the (then) Fat City Stringband...later called the Highwoods Stringband. It was Mac's signature banjo for many years. I'm not sure if it's the same one that Walt Koken plays now or not...maybe Pete Peterson or Kelly Allen will enlighten us here.

The little festival was out in the Abbeville SC area. Jim was there playing with one of the bands he picks with, Northern Border. Here is a link to a video that I took there. Please excuse the shaky camera work, I didn't have my tripod with me and my wife asked me for the car keys right in the middle of this tune, so I had to retrieve them and shoot at the same time. Jim really does a fine job on this one.
I didn't get a chance to shoot any stills, I kinda got roped into being the sound guy at this event, and no, those aren't my monitors, and they aren't on either, not with that large condenser mic they were using.
