I was introduced to the banjo as a teenager (15 years old) one Saturday afternoon, tooling around the countryside with my mom. We were hitting flea markets and swap shops. I brought my 2XL to trade for something, I didn't know what, just whatever cool old thing that might catch my eye. And if you don't know what a 2XL is, see this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2-XL I found the hidden treasure at the last swap-shop we stopped at - it was an old Kay banjo. And the owner swapped it for the 2XL, fair trade. I have no idea how old that banjo is, but I still have it. I know it is older than the sixties models, just can't seem to find any pictures of old Kays that match this one. I ended up taking bluegrass lessons for a year. My instructor lost a lot of hair that year. I had a struggle learning how to keep time. Well, family and job came along pretty quick in my life, so the old Kay got put away in the closet, never to be played again. Twenty years later (2006), the old banjo bug came back to bite me. I pulled out the Kay, and lo and behold, the peghead had cracked clean off the neck! Well, I've gotten to a place in my life that I have time to go back to learning banjo, so I went and bought a Deering Goodtime. I'm inspired by John Balch, Pete Seeger and Mary Z Cox. When I was younger, all I wanted to learn was hard-driving bluegrass. But, I guess I've mellowed in age, because the haunting melodic old-time style of playing is looking very attractive.
