Notes: This is number 222 in O'Neil's Music of Ireland. It's a simple 3/4 tune mostly in quarter notes. I've "banjoed" it up quite a bit - making it eighth notes everywhere. The tune doesn't sound particularly Irish to start with, but the banjo treatment here really makes it sound like something from the Old West. The process is probably a more conscious attempt to emulate something in modern times that evolved naturally historically. I've rated the difficulty here as beginner despite a small amount of drop-thumbing. I quite like this version, and I hope you do too, but now I have to decide whether this is just the starting point, and whether or not I should continue on with some fancier variations. Cheers!

Notes: The «deacon from hell» is a french-canadian tune that is very modal going back and forth between major and minor, it is also very crooked. 'Legend has it that Thomas Pomerleau, (the composer of this tune), promised a priest that he would throw his violin into the stove in order to receive absolution. He actually threw his violin into the stove and, having received his absolution, immediately withdrew it ... he had taken the precaution not to light the stove'. Notes: According to thesession.org, this tune comes from the mid 1700s when England was actively stomping out the culture of the Scottish Highlands. Sheet music is available at http://thesession.org/tunes/

"The English general Cumberland received the sobriquet 'Butcher' after the defeat of the Jacobite forces of Bonnie Prince Charlie at Culloden in 1746, such was the savagery of his reprisals and cruelty toward prisoners of the engagement. In the aftermath of the rising a series of laws were passed which aimed to suppress the Highland culture and break forever the power of the ancient clans in order to prevent any such rebellion from again happening. Thus, highland dress and the wearing of clan tartan was prohibited on pain of death, arms were banned, and, attesting to the power of traditional music to evoke emotion, pipers were outlawed. In fact, reports Williamson, the kilt continued to be prohibited until 1782, forcing the Highlanders to wear trews. Any clergyman who did not pray in church expressly for George of Hanover could be transported for life, and those who attended such services were liable to fine and imprisonment. This was in force till 1792. The Burning of the Piper's Hut probably refers to these times."

Notes: My source was "The Old-Time Fiddler's Repertory - 245 Traditional Tunes", Compiled and edited by R.P. Christeson. This arrangement is fairly true to the fiddler's transcription, except in the 2nd and 6th full measures of the B-part where I added some notes and chords to make the quarter and half notes sound more interesting. I also changed the time signature from 2/4 to cut-time. Fun, fairly easy piece to play. Note that this is the fiddle tune and not the song from "O Brother Where Art Thou?" Cheers!

Notes: Everybody loves Steve Earle's "Galway Girl", good verses, very good chorus and now a fine banjo solo based on Sharon Shannon's intrumental. The tune itself is not difficult. Most of ornementations I usually add are left, you can add yours. The only difficulty is stepping between 5th and 12th positions and back. Enjoy and if you like it, let me know.

Notes: An Irish jig transformed into a CH banjo reel.
It is normally played in D-mixolydian (D scale with C-natural), but I tabbed it in "triple-C" tuning, so you'd capo up one step to get to D.
The triple C tuning seem good for the drones of these piping tunes. Adding extra beats to the jig to change it from 6/8 time to 4/4 time "americanizes" the tune. One BHO member even said it seems "bluesy".

Notes: Jig version of "Greenfields of America". Well, there is a little bit of that theme, but it's not as strong as I suspected it would be, but it's a fun jig to play in any case. Fingering for jigs is always "M-something-M M somthing-M", where that something is a hammer-on, a pull-off, or a drop-thumb. If there are exceptions I indicate it. In this tune there are two up-picks and two measures that have M-M-M M-M-M. Other than that, pretty easy to play. Oh, the source was "The Dance Music of Ireland, O'Neill's 1001", number 206. Enjoy!

Notes: "The story of my old rooster" by Yvon Mimeault from his CD "Y'etait temps". This is a Quebecois tune that is played often in the Olympia session. According to the story, when Yvon was young he walked across the farmyard and was attacked by the old rooster. Yvon, with injured leg and pride, pulls out his sling-shot and faces the rooster. As the beast turns its head sideways to look him in the eye — roosters turn sideways for a face to face — Yvon takes a shot. The bird, hit in the head, falls to the ground. Yvon, after making sure nobody saw him, leans it against a fence where he can discretely keep an eye on it. After a while, the rooster, who was only knocked out, gets up and staggers back to the henhouse, to the relief of Yvon. The next morning, as usual, the old rooster hopped on a fence to wake up the whole farm, but he was now singing out of tune.

Notes: This is a nice 6/8 jig for clawhammer, as played by Noah Cline.
The triangle ? in the tab indicates a clawhammer down stroke with the preferable clawhammer finger (index or middle finger). There are six 1/8 notes in the measure and the clawhammer strokes are on the 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 6th notes. It requires a little other rhythm than the usual clawhammer bum-pa-di-ty rhythm in 4/4 or 2/4.

Notes: I first heard SilasBanjo play this on You Tube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlDuk5NLprQ) and fell in love with it (It's been my ringtone ever since!) I went in search of a TAB to help me learn it and eventually pieced together a version, just ever-so slightly different from his wonderful version.
It evolves each time I play it, but it's very catchy. This is my latest incarnation (but one - changed the b-part to be more like the Silas one). I believe the original writer to be Michael Fox, but correct me if I'm wrong!

Notes: When I was growing up my Mother sang her version of “Danny Boy” to me multiple times a day during my entire childhood. Londonderry Air is the nane is the name of the tune the lyrics of "Danny Boy" are set to. It's the first tune I learned to play on my banjo. I hope someone finds this tab useful. Notes: Irish Polkas can be somewhat boring musically, although you can play them quite vigorously and audiences usually tends to like them. This is one I decided to tab from a slow session that I play in. I believe I found a new purpose for this polka when it comes to banjo playing. This polka could be renamed "A Study in Alternate String Pull-Offs". Working on technique can be quite boring, but when you have a little tune behind it it becomes fun again. Almost every measure of this piece can be played with one or two alternate string pull-offs. If you have your hand is in first position, then you will practice the alternate string pull-off with your index finger. If you shift to the second position, then the alternate string pull offs are now down with the middle finger. So, play this tune to get a work-out and practice your alternate string pull-off technique! Have fun!

Notes: Source is "The Phillips Collection of Traditional American Fiddle Tunes". the A-part is in d-major, and the B-part is in a-mixolydian. Ken Perlman has a beautiful version in double-c tuning in his book "Melodic Clawhammer Banjo", capo-ed up two frets. This was my attempt to come up with an arrangement in standard open-g tuning, with the minor exception of putting in the 5th string high g-drone to a high-a. This can be accomplished quickly in a session, with for example a railroad spike.

Notes: I wrote this melody for our contra dance band. It is based on the chord backup for a Scottish tune called 'Kohler's Hornpipe', which sounds a little like Pachelbel's Canon. Kohler's Hornpipe is sometimes called 'Pachelbel's Frolics'. The recording here is Greg Pelletier (banjo) and Jesse Partridge (guitar)

Notes: Not a particularly interesting polka, but one that can be enthusiastically played by beginner and seasoned veteran alike, and usually quite appreciated by the audience. Banjo difficulty is somewhere between beginner and intermediate, but there are a few moderately difficult moves like the m-arpeggio and leading with a thumb in clawhammer style. This together with Britches Full Of Stitches, and Newmarket Polka, is an entire 3-song set of polkas with for the 5-string banjo in standard tuning - (capoed up two frets to match the fiddles.) Have fun wit' it b'ys!

Notes: Aren't the lyrics to that other tune, "Sally in the garden, sifting sand"? Either someone had a sense of humour changing that to "assisting Sam", or some hearing problems. I suspect it's the former. My source for this is "The Old-Time Fiddler's Repertory", - 245 Traditional Tunes, Compiled and edited by R.P.Christeson. This is mountain minor tuning capoed up two frets to match the fiddle. It's a departure for me since I normally arrange Irish tunes so I can play them at sessions, but I love old-timey music too. I don't think I had to change much for the banjo other than notate in cut-time instead of 2/4. Oh, and here is a cool link with the fiddler playing the tune. http://slippery-hill.com/RP/008-Sally.mp3

Notes: The first song written by the famous Irish harpist Turlough O'Carolan (1670 - 1738), the translated title means Big Hill, Little Hill and the lyrics described a battle between two fairy groups. The composition was so remarkable that it began a lifetime as a successful bard in the days when harpists traveled from manor to manor, earning their living providing entertainment.

Notes: The source of this tune is "Old Time Kentucky Fiddle Tunes" by Jeff Todd Titon, number 154. This tune is clearly derived from Green Fields of America, but it has it's own charm too. It's a little crooked - for example 6 measures in the b-part) I've presented a bare-bones arrangement here that is pretty close to the fiddle transcription.(you should of course ornament to your taste) Exceptions are, there appears to be a typo in the last measure of the A part with a figure reproduced, that I removed, and I changed a double low "e" to an "e" plus high-g-drone, and I also found it fun to slide from the low e to the g instead of try some manoeuvre like an overly long reaching hammer-on, or an m-arpeggio. For the quarter notes in the first full measure, you can simply add the high-g drone, or you can actually play the notes as in Greenfields of America. Lot's of fun to play, cheers.

Notes: I couldn't find a clawhammer version of South Australia so between knowing the chords and finding the melody somewhere online in the key of C, I came up with this in D. Note that you should tune the 5th string to A for this to sound right. It's largely based around the melody and I'm pretty much a straight novice but the second half, or "Rolling king" part, is fun to play and I'm quite proud of it. I may re-upload once I figure out how to add lyrics in TablEdit. I welcome any and all questions, complaints, suggestions, comments, etc.

Notes: Swallowtail Jig in 6/8 time requires a different clawhammer stroke where the downstroke (m) plays the 1st and 3rd note of each triplet. The middle note can be played with a hammer-on, pull-off or drop thumb, depending on where the note is on the fretboard. The tab indicates the downstroke (m) and middle note (h, p, t) in Part A. Triplets can also be handled by skipping the middle note using a quarter note and eighth note pair rather than three eighth notes in a triplet. Ken Perlman suggests thinking of:

Notes: This is a traditional Irish melody from the 1800s arranged for clawhammer style on five string banjo. The now-famous lyrics were written around 1919 by Canon Charles O’Neill and deal with the Easter Rising of 1916.
Those that are familiar with their Americana music should be aware of the heavy influence of Celtic music on traditional Appalachian music and this tune lends itself very naturally to clawhammer playing and in fact it sounds very similar to traditional mountain tunes. The tune is traditionally played slowly as it is a solemn and mournful piece, particularly with O'Neill's lyrics, but I think it sounds better at a higher tempo when played clawhammer style.
