Notes: Clawhammer version of the 2ftl tab I posted. Originally by Charlie Parr. I typically do the ending bit (the last 3 measures) for another 2 measures before going in to another verse. I also sometimes substitute a regular D for the D7 near the end.
Charlie plays it (on guitar) with a capo on the 2nd fret so if you want to really sound like him that might be a good call.

Notes: Does the world really need yet another recipe for boiled cabbage? Probably not, but this one offers two versions. The first has a tiny hint of "old time" to it; the second is entirely rolls and, if nothing else, is good for practice. Or you can mix and match them, a bar or two here and there, and see what you come up with. Makes a good "second tune", after "Arkansas Traveler".

Notes: In the early 1960s, during the penetration of folk music onto the pop charts, BitW was recorded by the Chad Mitchell Trio, accompanied by Paul Prestopino on the 5-String banjo. Prestopino was a multi-instrumentalist who was an original member of the Greenbriar Boys, and he went on to provide instrumental support to a variety of artists. I have always been impressed with both the song and its suitability for the banjo, and I have tabbed my version of it. The tablature comprises two breaks, in clawhammer style. The first is a pretty straight recounting of the melody, and the second incorporates some elements of drop thumb.

This song is easily traceable back to the early seventeenth century where it appears in a small collection as "The Lovely Northerne Lass." Allan Ramsay also published a version in his "Tea Table Miscellany", during the 1720s. It is a moving tale of love, banishment and exile, supported by a very beautiful melody. Cowdenknowes is in Berwickshire, near to the village of Earlston, a place much associated with the 13th century poet and prophet, "Thomas The Rhymer". I got this song years ago, from my friend and neighbour, Archie Fisher.
This example of "The Broom of the Cowdenknowes" is performed by Andy M. Stewart with Silly Wizard on the albums Wild and Beautiful and The Best of Silly Wizard, both available from the Chivalry Music store

Notes: This tab describes the banjo introduction to "Cindy" from a clip from Pete Seeger's "Rainbow Quest" program (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vhTWMOebv8 ). Pete fingerpicks the intro and then plays clawhammer backup behind the singing with Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry. The folk picking pattern is: 1 2-and 3-and 4. Each measures start with a pinch (thumb and finger). Then thumb generally alternates between the 5th string and the 3rd string on the beat like the thumb bass on guitar. The 2nd and 3rd beats are made up of the thumb followed by a finger pick as eighth notes. The 4th beat is usually a single note played by the thumb.

Notes: This clawhammer version is more or less based on Chet Atkin's version (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SIf7RW3f48 ). I have tried to transfer Chet's version to clawhammer banjo, even if it is big differences between Chet's alternate bass guitar and cllawhammer banjo.
The second part (B Part) is played with three-finger forward rolls instead of the clawhammer rhyrhm.. You can play the A part instead if you don't master the forward roll.
The tuning is aCGBD which is good for tunes in Am: Copper Kettle starts in the key of C, but modulates to Am in the middle of the tune. (I have avoided the fourth string so also aDGBD would work, but be careful to not play the fourth string open.

Notes: Hi I couldnt Select the correct tuning but it is in Docks Signature Tuning F# C G A D (relative) but he ussually tunes it down two frets so the actual tuning is E Bb F G C. This is a song about the suffering of Jesus Christ, even though I'm not religous this song still has an impact which anyone can appreaciate. Like in Many of Docks songs he brushes with his index finger on certain parts which gives it his unique sound, it is noted as Br in the tab with an arrow going upward. Thanks to Freddy Badger who introduced me to this song and gave me some tips which helped me transcribe it, (Search him on Youtube).

Notes: I really enjoy playing this song. Dave Hum has a great video on YouTube. I tried to tab the song the way he played it. As you can tell, I'm new to writing tablature. I'm still working on learning how to time the notes in the tabs. You can hear the proper timing from Dave's video. Dave used a capo on the second fret, Standard tuning. I like to slow this song down on YouTube in the settings to about 70% to comfortably play along.
There's a really great extended melodic run about half way through the song, which I tabbed out. In the video you can hear a fan cheering Dave in the background while he's playing this run, which is an eyebrow raiser.
Also, I purposely chose to tab this song because the original backing track is available from Dave Hum's website. I love his backing tracks! Enjoy.

Notes: This is a version of the Cuban folk song Guantamera. By request, I arranged it for two finger style. It contains a mix of thumb lead and index lead (but mostly thumb lead, and there are a lot of syncopations ("thumb skips" and "index skips" to get the Latin rhythms. Notes: Hyfrydol is a 19th century Welsh folk tune by Rowland Prichard. It has been used for many church hymns including “Blue Boat Home” and “Come Thou Long Expected Jesus.” This is my arrangement for clawhammer banjo (although I play it with up-picking and down-striking). Notes: A Soviet folk song that became emblematic of the struggle against fascism in the Great Patriotic War (World War II). The lyrics tell the story of a Soviet woman who misses her beloved, keeping her love true to him while he fights for the motherland.
The Soviet BM-13 multi-rocket launcher was known as the Katyusha. (It was also known as "Stalin's Organ," because the word "organ" works for puns in Russian just as well as it does in English).
As this song is in the key of A minor, a non-standard tuning was necessary. However, after arranging it in aDGBD, I tried a different arrangement in gCFAD, and I cannot decide which one I like more. So I've included both, although only the first version contains the chord notations and the Russian lyrics transliterated for English speakers. (I've done my best on that front -- it's quite difficult because of the large phonemic differences between the languages, so if you're going to sing it I'd suggest checking out some of the many, many recordings on YouTube).
I'm sure someone will see my upload of a Russian song as grounds for an argument, but let's remember the words of a bluegrass legend about how music overcomes political and ideological divisions: "I can almost hear it now, when we pick the Wildwood flower // and Congress sings a good ole country song // Khrushchev wouldn't be so bad, Lord he wouldn't get so mad // if we let him bring his balalaika 'long" --Jimmy Martin

Notes: "The Merry Minuet" was a very popular tune fort the Kingston Trio during the 'folk scare' in the 1960s. I learned a bunch of KT tunes back then. It was a pleasant surprise when a BHO member requested tab for this tune some 60 years later. Sadly, the threat of nuclear war is still with us. And so is the power of protest songs.

Notes: A pretty little fiddle tune in D major by Chris Haigh. I have created a simple 3 finger melodic banjo transcription of it here. I've listed it as intermediate because it climbs up to the 17th fret in the B part, but don't let that put you off - it's not too hard! Tuning is aDGBD, so please remember to spike your 5th string to A (don't tune it UP to A - there is one note in the B part that is fretted on the 5th, which will be a tone sharp if you do that! The first part shows a strumming pattern
1 Brush down with hand
2 Brush down with thumb
3 Brush up with index
4 Brush down with hand
5 Brush down with thumb
6 Brush up with index
7 Brush down with hand
8 Brush up with index
If there is eight 1/8 notes in a measure the brush down with hand is emphasized or the 1, 4 and 7 note.
The second part is a kind of clawhammer, also giving the emphasizing on 1, 4 and 7 note. A lot of drop thumb is involved and the drop thumb on note 4 should be loud.

Notes: "Spider Home" is a tune from the folk punk group O'Death. This tab attempts to approximate the banjo backup on the recording. The slam-jam nature of punk music presents a challenge for the tab writer. I have indicated the fingering for the intro and first part which are played at a moderate tempo. In the sections after that, I just indicate the 3-note chord positions and leave it to the user to determine whether to strum, pick 2- or 3-note arpeggios, or both. Notes: Gypsy Jazz purist might be appalled, but this is a 5-string banjo version of the song “Tears” (also called “Muri Wachsella an u Sennelo Weesch”) by Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli. This is an old European folk song, but I can’t find much about its history. The arrangement is in Am with Am tuning (a E A C E). Django played it in Cm (which I think is the most mournful key); Chet Atkins and Mark Knopfler, and many others, play it in Am. The bridge changes to the major key.
I did not indicate a playing style because I prefer to play it with some upstrokes, but it can be played entirely with clawhammer strokes.

Notes: I just worked up a simple CH tab.... along the lines of the way I play it. The only real embellishments I've added are where I hammer on into the melody note on the first beat of some of the measures. For note... on the first beat and third beat of each measure where I only show a single note being played, I am actually either hammering down into the whole chord or already holding the whole chord down. As to the note on the third beat of each measure you may also wish to modulate up, down, or stay on the same note as the first note of that same measure... to suit your taste and depending on whether you are leaving the anticipation of leading into the next passage, or providing closure to the passage you are in.

Notes: This is a transcription of the Flatt & Scruggs recording of the song as heard on "At Carnegie Hall". I transcribed this because it was the slowest banjo playing I ever heard from Earl Scruggs and I wanted to practice some ear skills. The banjo intro and the two breaks are almost identical, so it really just is eight or nine measures worth of music.
I guess I need to find a better way to typeset the bend in the sixth measure. The E note on the 4th string doesn't go up all the way to the F note, it really just is some quarter note bend. In some places I guess I haven't really got the rhythm right, especially the lick in measure 3 of the banjo break. Make sure to listen to the original a lot and play it as you hear it. Generally the whole piece has a very strong bounce to it, i.e. the first one of a pair of eighth notes is always longer than the second one.
