The temperature has risen to just about freezing tonight. This means that tomorrow, the local news will be packed with stories about house fires. When it warms up a bit, people turn their furnaces way down and use secondary heating sources to save a bit on the power or fuel oil bills. This means electrical fires and chimney fires, and it makes me sad. A lot of people up here in the Poconos still heat with coal, and on nights like this the smell of coal burning hangs in the air like a miasma. It's a rotten, sulfur smell.
But if I ignore that, and look around the yard, the snow is still sparkling in the moonlight. If you ever wondered what Clement Moore meant by "the moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow/ gave the luster of mid-day to objects below," just take a look at my front lawn tonight and you'll see it instantly.
Tomorrow, the kiddo will drive herself down to Philly for her exams, and come back on Wednesday afternoon. She's been working hard for the last 3 days, reviewing math and chemistry and trying to get a couple of papers finished. She is confident that her exams will go well and I have no reason to doubt that. Her first semester of college has gone better for her than I anticipated, academically. She really seems to thrive on the classwork. But to tell the truth, I am really looking forward to having her home for the next five weeks.
